Self-motion holds a special status in visual processing.

ABSTRACT: Agency plays an important role in self-recognition from motion. Here, we investigated whether our own movements benefit from preferential processing even when the task is unrelated to self-recognition, and does not involve agency judgments. Participants searched for a moving target defined by its known shape among moving distractors, while continuously moving the computer mouse with one hand. They thereby controlled the motion of one item, which was randomly either the target or any of the distractors, while the other items followed pre-recorded motion pathways. Performance was more accurate and less prone to degradation as set size increased when the target was the self-controlled item. An additional experiment confirmed that participant-controlled motion was not physically more salient than motion recorded offline. We found no evidence that self-controlled items captured attention. Taken together, these results suggest that visual events are perceived more accurately when they are the consequences of our actions, even when self-motion is task irrelevant.

Sex Differences in Visual Motion Processing.

Project description:The importance of sex as a biological variable has recently been emphasized by major funding organizations [1] and within the neuroscience community [2]. Critical sex-based neural differences are indicated by, for example, conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have a strong sex bias with a higher prevalence among males [51, 3]. Motivated by this broader context, we report a marked sex difference in a visual motion perception task among neurotypical adults. Motion duration thresholds [4, 5]-the minimum duration needed to accurately perceive motion direction-were considerably shorter for males than females. We replicated this result across three laboratories and 263 total participants. This type of enhanced performance has previously been observed only in special populations including ASD, depression, and senescence [6-8]. The observed sex difference cannot be explained by general differences in speed of visual processing, overall visual discrimination abilities, or potential motor-related differences. We also show that while individual differences in motion duration thresholds are associated with differences in fMRI responsiveness of human MT+, surprisingly, MT+ response magnitudes did not differ between males and females. Thus, we reason that sex differences in motion perception are not captured by an MT+ fMRI measure that predicts within-sex individual differences in perception. Overall, these results show how sex differences can manifest unexpectedly, highlighting the importance of sex as a factor in the design and analysis of perceptual and cognitive studies.

Illusory Motion Perception Is Associated with Contrast Discrimination but Not Motion Sensitivity, Self-Reported Visual Discomfort, or Migraine Status.

Project description:PurposeAltered visual processing of motion and contrast has been previously reported in people with migraine. One possible manifestation of this altered visual processing is increased self-reported susceptibility to visual illusions of contrast and motion. Here, we use the Fraser-Wilcox illusion to explore individual differences in motion illusion strength in people with and without migraine. The motion-inducing mechanisms of the Fraser-Wilcox illusion are purported to be contrast dependent. To better understand the mechanisms of the illusion, as well as visual processing anomalies in migraine, we explored whether migraine status, susceptibility to visual discomfort, contrast discrimination, or motion sensitivity are related to quantified motion illusion strength.MethodsThirty-six (16 with aura, 20 without aura) people with migraine and 20 headache-free controls participated. Outcome measures were motion illusion strength (the physical motion speed that counterbalanced the illusory motion), motion sensitivity, and contrast discrimination thresholds (measured for each contrast pair that formed part of the illusory motion stimulus). Typical daily visual discomfort was self-reported via questionnaire.ResultsMotion illusion strength was negatively correlated with contrast discrimination threshold (r = -0.271, P = 0.04) but was not associated with motion sensitivity or migraine status. People with migraine with aura reported experiencing visual discomfort more frequently than the control group (P = 0.001). Self-reported visual discomfort did not relate to quantified perceptual motion illusion strength.ConclusionsIndividuals with better contrast discrimination tend to perceive faster illusory motion regardless of migraine status.

Visual and non-visual contributions to the perception of object motion during self-motion.

Project description:Many locomotor tasks involve interactions with moving objects. When observer (i.e., self-)motion is accompanied by object motion, the optic flow field includes a component due to self-motion and a component due to object motion. For moving observers to perceive the movement of other objects relative to the stationary environment, the visual system could recover the object-motion component - that is, it could factor out the influence of self-motion. In principle, this could be achieved using visual self-motion information, non-visual self-motion information, or a combination of both. In this study, we report evidence that visual information about the speed (experiment 1) and direction (experiment 2) of self-motion plays a role in recovering the object-motion component even when non-visual self-motion information is also available. However, the magnitude of the effect was less than one would expect if subjects relied entirely on visual self-motion information. Taken together with previous studies, we conclude that when self-motion is real and actively generated, both visual and non-visual self-motion information contribute to the perception of object motion. We also consider the possible role of this process in visually guided interception and avoidance of moving objects.

Coding of self-motion-induced and self-independent visual motion in the rat dorsomedial striatum.

Project description:Evolutionary development of vision has provided us with the capacity to detect moving objects. Concordant shifts of visual features suggest movements of the observer, whereas discordant changes are more likely to be indicating independently moving objects, such as predators or prey. Such distinction helps us to focus attention, adapt our behavior, and adjust our motor patterns to meet behavioral challenges. However, the neural basis of distinguishing self-induced and self-independent visual motions is not clarified in unrestrained animals yet. In this study, we investigated the presence and origin of motion-related visual information in the striatum of rats, a hub of action selection and procedural memory. We found that while almost half of the neurons in the dorsomedial striatum are sensitive to visual motion congruent with locomotion (and that many of them also code for spatial location), only a small subset of them are composed of fast-firing interneurons that could also perceive self-independent visual stimuli. These latter cells receive their visual input at least partially from the secondary visual cortex (V2). This differential visual sensitivity may be an important support in adjusting behavior to salient environmental events. It emphasizes the importance of investigating visual motion perception in unrestrained animals.

Self-operated stimuli improve subsequent visual motion integration.

Project description:Evidences of perceptual changes that accompany motor activity have been limited primarily to audition and somatosensation. Here we asked whether motor learning results in changes to visual motion perception. We designed a reaching task in which participants were trained to make movements along several directions, while the visual feedback was provided by an intrinsically ambiguous moving stimulus directly tied to hand motion. We find that training improves coherent motion perception and that changes in movement are correlated with perceptual changes. No perceptual changes are observed in passive training even when observers were provided with an explicit strategy to facilitate single motion perception. A Bayesian model suggests that movement training promotes the fine-tuning of the internal representation of stimulus geometry. These results emphasize the role of sensorimotor interaction in determining the persistent properties in space and time that define a percept.

Ferrets as a Model for Higher-Level Visual Motion Processing.

Project description:Ferrets are a major developmental animal model due to their early parturition. Here we show for the first time that ferrets could be used to study development of higher-level visual processes previously identified in primates. In primates, complex motion processing involves primary visual cortex (V1), which generates local motion signals, and higher-level visual area MT, which integrates these signals over more global spatial regions. Our data show similar transformations in motion signals between ferret V1 and higher-level visual area PSS, located in the posterior bank of the suprasylvian sulcus. We found that PSS neurons, like MT neurons, were tuned for stimulus motion and showed strong suppression between opposing direction inputs. Most strikingly, PSS, like MT, exhibited robust global motion signals when tested with coherent plaids-the classic test for motion integration across multiple moving elements. These PSS responses were described well by computational models developed for MT. Our findings establish the ferret as a strong animal model for development of higher-level visual processing.

Distinct visual motion processing impairments in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Project description:Aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are associated with declines in the visual perception of self-movement that undermine navigation and independent living. We studied 214 subjects' heading direction and speed discrimination using the radial patterns of visual motion in optic flow. Young (YA), middle-aged (MA), and older normal (ON) subjects, and AD patients viewed optic flow in which we manipulated the motion coherence, spatial texture, and temporal periodicity composition of the visual display. Aging and AD were associated with poorer heading and speed perception at lower temporal periodicity, with smaller effects of spatial texture. AD patients were particularly impaired by motion incoherence created by adding randomly moving dots to the optic flow. We conclude that visual motion processing is impaired by distinct mechanisms in aging and the transition to AD, implying distinct neural mechanisms of impairment.

Reduced visual context effects in global motion processing in depression.

Project description:Research supports abnormal inhibitory visual motion processing in adults with remitted and current depression, but all studies to date have used paradigms with simple grating stimuli. Global motion processing, where multiple motion signals must be integrated, has not been explored in depression, nor have inhibitory processes within that domain. Depressed participants (n = 46) and healthy controls (n = 28) completed a direction discrimination task featuring a random dot pattern stimulus. Various signal (rightward or leftward dots) to noise (dots with randomly assigned directions) ratios modulated task difficulty. Metrics of global center surround suppression and facilitation were calculated. Accuracy in the baseline condition (i.e., no surrounding annulus) was not significantly different between depressed and healthy participants. Global center surround suppression and facilitation were not significantly different between healthy and depressed participants overall. When limiting the sample to unmedicated individuals, depressed participants (n = 27) showed a reduced global center surround suppression effect compared to controls, and there was no difference in global center surround facilitation. While global motion processing is intact in depression, abnormal center surround suppression effects in depression do extend to global motion stimuli. These alterations may be mitigated by the psychotropic medications taken by some subjects in our depressed sample. Future studies should explore the mechanisms underlying these effects.

Enhancement of visual cues to self-motion during a visual/vestibular conflict.

Project description:Perceiving our orientation and motion requires sensory information provided by vision, our body and acceleration. Normally, these cues are redundant however in some situations they can conflict. Here, we created a visual-vestibular conflict by simulating a body-upright virtual world while participants were either standing (no conflict), supine or prone (conflict) and assessed the perception of "forward" distance travelled induced by visual motion. Some participants felt they were standing upright even when lying, indicating a visual reorientation illusion (VRI). We previously showed that when experiencing a VRI, visually induced self-motion is enhanced. Here, we determined if there was a relationship between VRI vulnerability and sensory weighting. Confirming our previous findings, the VRI-vulnerable group showed enhanced self-motion perception. We then assessed the relative weightings of visual and non-visual cues in VRI-vulnerable and VRI-resistant individuals using the Oriented Character Recognition Test. Surprisingly, VRI-vulnerable individuals weighted visual cues less and gravity cues more compared to VRI-resistant individuals. These findings are in line with robust integration where, when the difference between two cues is large, the discrepant cue (here gravity) is ignored. Ignoring the gravity cue then leads to relatively more emphasis being placed on visual information and thus a higher gain.

Hierarchical processing of complex motion along the primate dorsal visual pathway.

Project description:Neurons in the medial superior temporal (MST) area of the primate visual cortex respond selectively to complex motion patterns defined by expansion, rotation, and deformation. Consequently they are often hypothesized to be involved in important behavioral functions, such as encoding the velocities of moving objects and surfaces relative to the observer. However, the computations underlying such selectivity are unknown. In this work we have developed a unique, naturalistic motion stimulus and used it to probe the complex selectivity of MST neurons. The resulting data were then used to estimate the properties of the feed-forward inputs to each neuron. This analysis yielded models that successfully accounted for much of the observed stimulus selectivity, provided that the inputs were combined via a nonlinear integration mechanism that approximates a multiplicative interaction among MST inputs. In simulations we found that this type of integration has the functional role of improving estimates of the 3D velocity of moving objects. As this computation is of general utility for detecting complex stimulus features, we suggest that it may represent a fundamental aspect of hierarchical sensory processing.
