The mixed-valent titanium phosphate, Li(2)Ti(2)(PO(4))(3), dilithium dititanium(III/IV) tris-(orthophosphate).

ABSTRACT: The mixed-valent titanium phosphate, Li(2)Ti(2)(PO(4))(3), has been prepared by the reactive halide flux method. The title compound is isostructural with Li(2)TiM(PO(4))(3) (M = Fe, Cr) and Li(2)FeZr(PO(4))(3) and has the same (3) (?)[Ti(2)(PO(4))(3)](2-) framework as the previously reported Li(3-) (x)M(2)(PO(4))(3) phases. The framework is built up from corner-sharing TiO(6) octa-hedra and PO(4) tetra-hedra, one of which has 2 symmetry. The Li(+) ions are located on one crystallographic position and reside in the vacancies of the framework. They are surrounded by four O atoms in a distorted tetra-hedral coordination. The classical charge-balance of the title compound can be represented as Li(+) (2)(Ti(3+)/Ti(4+))(PO(4) (3-))(3).

Project description:The structure of Li(3)V(2)(PO(4))(3) has been reinvestigated from single-crystal X-ray data. Although the results of the previous studies (all based on powder diffraction data) are comparable with our redetermination, all atoms were refined with anisotropic displacement parameters in the current study, and the resulting bond lengths are more accurate than those determined from powder diffraction data. The title compound adopts the Li(3)Fe(2)(PO(4))(3) structure type. The structure is composed of VO(6) octa-hedra and PO(4) tetra-hedra by sharing O atoms to form the three-dimensional anionic framework (?) (3)[V(2)(PO(4))(3)](3-). The positions of the Li(+) ions in the empty channels can vary depending on the synthetic conditions. Bond-valence-sum calculations showed structures that are similar to the results of the present study seem to be more stable compared with others. The classical charge balance of the title compound can be represented as [Li(+)](3)[V(3+)](2)[P(5+)](3)[O(2-)](12).

Project description:The title compound, KSn(2)(PO(4))(3), belongs to the NASICON-type family of phosphates with the space group R[Formula: see text]. Its structure is constructed by very regular [with P-O distances ranging from 1.513?(6) to 1.522?(6)?Å] PO(4) tetra-hedra and SnO(6) octa-hedra on the 3. axis, which are linked by O atoms, forming an [Sn(2)(PO(4))(3)] framework. The K atoms occupy the [Formula: see text]. axis sites and are located in the voids of this arrangement. The crystal studied was a merohedral twin with twin law (010 100 00[Formula: see text]) and a component ratio of 0.580?(7):0.420?(7).

Photo-redox reactivity of titanium-oxo clusters: mechanistic insight into a two-electron intramolecular process, and structural characterisation of mixed-valent Ti(iii)/Ti(iv) products.

Project description:Small titanium-oxo-alkoxide clusters, [TiO(OR)(O2PR'2)]4, synthesised by the stoichiometric reaction of Ti(OiPr)4, phosphinic acid and water, undergo a photo-redox transformation under long-wave UV light. The photo-reaction generates blue coloured, mixed-valence Ti(iii)/Ti(iv)-oxo clusters alongside acetone and isopropanol by-products. This reactivity indicates the ability for photoactivated charge separation to occur in even the smallest of Ti-oxo clusters. EPR and NMR spectroscopic studies support a photo-redox mechanism that occurs via an intramolecular, two-electron pathway, directly relating to current doubling effects observed at TiO2 photoanodes in the presence of alcohols. The rate of photo-reaction is solvent dependent, with donor solvents supporting the formation of low coordinate Ti(iii) sites. The nature of the electronic transition is identified by DFT and TDDFT calculations as an oxygen to titanium charge transfer and it is possible to finetune the UV absorption onset observed by changing the phosphinate ligand. A two-electron photo-reduced cluster, [Ti4O4(O2PPh2)6], forms spontaneously from the photo-reaction and its structure is identified by X-ray crystallography with supporting DFT calculations. These indicate that [Ti4O4(O2PPh2)6] is high-spin and contains two ferromagnetically coupled electrons delocalised over the Ti4 core. [Ti4O4(O2PPh2)6] undergoes rapid oxidation in air in the solid-state and performs a remarkable single-crystal to single-crystal transformation, to form a stable cluster-superoxide salt.

Crystal structure of tris-(hydroxyl-ammonium) orthophosphate.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title salt, ([H3NOH](+))3·[PO4](3-), consists of discrete hydroxyl-ammonium cations and ortho-phos-phate anions. The atoms of the cation occupy general positions, whereas the anion is located on a threefold rotation axis that runs through the phospho-rus atom and one of the phosphate O atoms. In the crystal structure, cations and anions are linked by inter-molecular O-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network. Altogether, one very strong O-H?O, two N-H?O hydrogen bonds of medium strength and two weaker bifurcated N-H?O inter-actions are observed.

Project description:The monoclinic form of trilithium dichromium(III) tris-(ortho-phosphate), Li3Cr2(PO4)3, was prepared by the reactive halide flux method. The structure of the title compound is composed of a three-dimensional anionic framework with composition ? (3)[Cr2(PO4)3](3-) and Li(+) ions situated in the empty channels. The rigid framework built up from CrO6 octa-hedra and PO4 tetra-hedra is the same as that found in other monoclinic Li3 M 2(PO4)3 (M = Fe, Sc, V) phases. The three Li(+) cations of Li3Cr2(PO4)3 are unequally disordered over six crystallographically different sites. The classical charge balance of the title compound can be represented as [Li(+)]3[Cr(3+)]2[P(5+)]3[O(2-)]12. Solid-state UV/Vis spectra indicate that the crystal filed splitting (?0) of the Cr(3+) ion is around 2.22?eV.

Exploring titanium(IV) chemical proximity to iron(III) to elucidate a function for Ti(IV) in the human body.

Project description:Despite its natural abundance and widespread use as food, paint additive, and in bone implants, no specific biological function of titanium is known in the human body. High concentrations of Ti(IV) could result in cellular toxicity, however, the absence of Ti toxicity in the blood of patients with titanium bone implants indicates the presence of one or more biological mechanisms to mitigate toxicity. Similar to Fe(III), Ti(IV) in blood binds to the iron transport protein serum transferrin (sTf), which gives credence to the possibility of its cellular uptake mechanism by transferrin-directed endocytosis. However, once inside the cell, how sTf bound Ti(IV) is released into the cytoplasm, utilized, or stored remain largely unknown. To explain the molecular mechanisms involved in Ti use in cells we have drawn parallels with those for Fe(III). Based on its chemical similarities with Fe(III), we compare the biological coordination chemistry of Fe(III) and Ti(IV) and hypothesize that Ti(IV) can bind to similar intracellular biomolecules. The comparable ligand affinity profiles suggest that at high Ti(IV) concentrations, Ti(IV) could compete with Fe(III) to bind to biomolecules and would inhibit Fe bioavailability. At the typical Ti concentrations in the body, Ti might exist as a labile pool of Ti(IV) in cells, similar to Fe. Ti could exhibit different types of properties that would determine its cellular functions. We predict some of these functions to mimic those of Fe in the cell and others to be specific to Ti. Bone and cellular speciation and localization studies hint toward various intracellular targets of Ti like phosphoproteins, DNA, ribonucleotide reductase, and ferritin. However, to decipher the exact mechanisms of how Ti might mediate these roles, development of innovative and more sensitive methods are required to track this difficult to trace metal in vivo.

Dilithium disodium nickel(II) cyclo-hexa-phosphate dodeca-hydrate, Li(2)Na(2)NiP(6)O(18)·12H(2)O.

Project description:The crystal structure of Li(2)Na(2)NiP(6)O(18)·12H(2)O is characterized by the presence of six-membered P(6)O(18) (6-) phosphate ring anions (inter-nal symmetry -1) having a chair conformation and three different cations, viz. Li(+), Na(+) and Ni(2+), to counterbalance the anionic charge. All atoms are in general positions except for nickel, which lies on a special position with site symmetry 2. Lithium has a tetra-hedral environment (LiO(4)), and sodium and nickel have octa-hedral environments [NaO(6) and Ni(H(2)O)(6), respectively]. The P(6)O(18) rings are linked via corner sharing by NaO(6) octa-hedra and LiO(4) tetra-hedra to form a three-dimensional framework presenting tunnels running along [010] in which the six-coordinated Ni(2+) cations are located. The structure is stabilized by a network of O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Ti(IV)-Tris(phenolate) Catalyst Systems for the Ring-Opening Copolymerization of Cyclohexene Oxide and Carbon Dioxide.

Project description:Titanium(IV) complexes of amino-tris(phenolate) ligands (LTiX, X = chloride, isopropoxide) together with bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride (PPNCl) are active catalyst systems for the ring-opening copolymerization of carbon dioxide and cyclohexene oxide. They show moderate activity, with turnover frequency values of ∼60 h-1 (0.02 mol % of catalyst, 80 °C, 40 bar of CO2) and high selectivity (carbonate linkages >90%), but their absolute performances are lower than those of the most active Ti(IV) catalyst systems. The reactions proceed with linear evolution of polycarbonate (PCHC) molar mass with epoxide conversion, consistent with controlled polymerizations, and evolve bimodal molar mass distributions of PCHC (up to M n = 42 kg mol-1). The stoichiometric reaction between [LTiO i Pr] and tetraphenylphosphonium chloride, PPh4Cl, allows isolation of the putative catalytic intermediate [LTi(O i Pr)Cl]-, which is characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The anionic titanium complex [LTi(OR)Cl]- is proposed as a model for the propagating alkoxide intermediates in the catalytic cycle.

Dicobalt copper bis-[orthophosphate(V)] monohydrate, Co(2.39)Cu(0.61)(PO(4))(2)·H(2)O.

Project description:In an attempt to hydro-thermally synthesize a phase with composition Co(2)Cu(PO(4))(2)·H(2)O, we obtained the title compound, Co(2.39)Cu(0.61)(PO(4))(2)·H(2)O instead. Chemical analysis confirmed the presence of copper in the crystal. The crystal structure of the title compound can be described as a three- dimensional network constructed from the stacking of two types of layers extending parallel to (010). These layers are made up from more or less deformed polyhedra: CoO(6) octa-hedra, (Cu/Co)O(5) square pyramids and PO(4) tetra-hedra. The first layer is formed by pairs of edge-sharing (Cu/Co)O(5) square pyramids linked via a common edge of each end of the (Cu/Co)(2)O(8) dimer to PO(4) tetra-hedra. The second layer is undulating and is built up from edge-sharing CoO(6) octa-hedra. The linkage between the two layers is accomplished by PO(4) tetra-hedra. The presence of water mol-ecules in the CoO(4)(H(2)O)(2) octa-hedron also contributes to the cohesion of the layers through O-H?O hydrogen bonding.

A toxicogenomics approach to screen chlorinated flame retardants tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate for potential health effects

Project description:Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is a pervasive flame retardant that has been identified as a chemical of concern given its health effects and therefore its use has since been tightly regulated. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), an analogue of TCEP, is believed to be its replacement. However, compared to TCEP, little is known of the toxicological impacts of TCIPP. We used RNA sequencing as unbiased and sensitive tool to identify and compare effects on a transcriptome level of TCEP and TCIPP in the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, HepG2. We identified that compared to other flame retardants, TCEP and TCIPP had little cytotoxicity. Treatment with sub-cytotoxic concentrations of the two compounds revealed that both chemicals elicited similar effects; both compounds were found to affect genes involved in immune responses and steroid hormone biosynthesis, while also affecting xenobiotic metabolism pathways in a similar manner. Specifically for effects on immune responses, both compounds were shown to alter the expression of the receptor of the potent and pleiotropic complement component, C5a. Additionally, expression of genes encoding for effector proteins involved in the complement cascade along with other potent inflammatory regulators were found altered in response to TCEP and TCIPP, further emphasizing their potential effects on immune function. Taken together, given that TCIPP elicited similar effects compared to TCEP, and at lower concentrations, the potential health effects of TCIPP need to be further studied for a complete risk assessment of the compound.
