Thorium divanadate dihydrate, Th(V(2)O(7))(H(2)O)(2).

ABSTRACT: The title compound, Th(V(2)O(7))(H(2)O)(2), was synthesized by a hydro-thermal reaction. The crystal structure consists of ThO(7)(OH(2))(2) tricapped trigonal prisms that share edges, forming [ThO(5)(OH(2))(2)](n) chains along [010]. The edge-sharing ThO(7)(OH(2))(2) polyhedra share one edge and five vertices with the V(2)O(7) divanadate anions having a nearly ecliptic conformation parallel to [001]. This results in an open framework with the water mol-ecules located in channels. O-H?O hydrogen bonding between water molecules and framework O atoms is observed. Bond-valence-sum calculations are in good agreement with the chemical formula of the title compound.

Thorium-phosphorus triamidoamine complexes containing Th-P single- and multiple-bond interactions.

Project description:Despite the burgeoning field of uranium-ligand multiple bonds, analogous complexes involving other actinides remain scarce. For thorium, under ambient conditions only a few multiple bonds to carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, selenium and tellurium are reported, and no multiple bonds to phosphorus are known, reflecting a general paucity of synthetic methodologies and also problems associated with stabilising these linkages at the large thorium ion. Here we report structurally authenticated examples of a parent thorium(IV)-phosphanide (Th-PH2), a terminal thorium(IV)-phosphinidene (Th=PH), a parent dithorium(IV)-phosphinidiide (Th-P(H)-Th) and a discrete actinide-phosphido complex under ambient conditions (Th=P=Th). Although thorium is traditionally considered to have dominant 6d-orbital contributions to its bonding, contrasting to majority 5f-orbital character for uranium, computational analyses suggests that the bonding of thorium can be more nuanced, in terms of 5f- versus 6d-orbital composition and also significant involvement of the 7s-orbital and how this affects the balance of 5f- versus 6d-orbital bonding character.

Feasibility of a novel photoproduction of 225Ac and 227Th with natural thorium target.

Project description:We propose an innovative way to produce both 225Ac and 227Th, two precious radioisotopes enabling promising targeted alpha therapy, in a natural thorium target bombarded with a 30-90 MeV electron beam. Bremsstrahlung photons in the target are analyzed by MCNP and in-situ photonuclear transmutation of 232Th is evaluated by using the TENDL nuclear data. In the photo-transmutation analysis, 13 nuclides including 229Th and 231Pa are modelled. Special procedures with chemical separations are also proposed to produce pure 225Ac and 227Th in separate streams. In addition, performance of the new approach is compared with conventional methods in terms of the 225Ac and 227Th yields. After a Th target is bombarded with a 500 kW electron beam for a year, yearly 225Ac yield is ~ 8.47 GBq (semi-permanently) and yearly 227Th yield is ~ 48.9 GBq over 50 years, and their yields are at least doubled in a 2-year irradiation. This work will help increase global supply of the two precious isotopes and would invariably help advance TAT-related researches and developments.

A triclinic polymorph of dicadmium divanadate(V).

Project description:The title compound, Cd2V2O7, was obtained under hydro-thermal conditions. Different from the known monoclinic form, the new polymorph of Cd2V2O7 has triclinic symmetry and is isotypic with Ca2V2O7. The building units of the crystal structure are two Cd(2+) cations, with coordination numbers of six and seven, and two V atoms with a tetra-hedral and a significantly distorted trigonal-pyramidal coordination environment, respectively. Two VO5 pyramids share an edge and each pyramid is connected to one VO4 tetra-hedron via a corner atom, forming an isolated V4O14 (8-) anion. These anions are arranged in sheets parallel to (-211) and are linked through the Cd(2+) cations into a three-dimensional framework structure.

Metal-Ion Displacement Approach for Optical Recognition of Thorium: Application of a Molybdenum(VI) Complex for Nanomolar Determination and Enrichment of Th(IV).

Project description:An azine-based molybdenum (Mo(VI)) complex (M1) is exploited for selective detection of thorium (Th(IV)) ions through a metal-ion displacement protocol. Th(IV) displaces Mo(VI) from M1 instantly leading to the formation of the Th(IV) complex, having orange-red emission. Consequently, a red shift of the emission wavelength along with 41-fold fluorescence enhancement is observed. This unique method allows detection of Th(IV) as low as 1.5 × 10-9 M. The displacement of Mo(VI) from M1 by Th(IV) is established by spectroscopic studies and kinetically followed by the stopped-flow technique. The displacement binding constant for Th(IV) is notably strong, 4.59 × 106 M-1. Extraction of Th(IV) from aqueous solution to the ethyl acetate medium using M1 has been achieved. The silica-immobilized M1 efficiently enriches Th(IV) from its reservoir through solid-phase extraction. Computational studies (density functional theory) support experimental findings.

Thermodynamic and kinetic stabilization of divanadate in the monovanadate/divanadate equilibrium using a Zn-cyclene derivative: Towards a simple ATP synthase model.

Project description:For the condensation of anions such as phosphate and ADP to form ATP and water, nature employs sophisticated supramolecular systems to overcome coulomb repulsion and activation barriers. For an attempt to create a simple, analogous chemical system, the dimerization of vanadate is probably the simplest model. We have investigated Zn-benzylcyclene which favors the dimerization thermodynamically as shown by NMR titration. Moreover, EXSY NMR experiments reveal that the vanadate dimer is also kinetically stabilized with respect to hydrolysis by complexation with Zn-cyclene.

ThC2@C82 versus Th@C84: unexpected formation of triangular thorium carbide cluster inside fullerenes.

Project description:Synthesis of the first thorium-containing clusterfullerenes, ThC2@C s (6)-C82 and ThC2@C2(5)-C82, is reported. These two novel actinide fullerene compounds were characterized by mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Crystallographic studies reveal that the encapsulated ThC2 clusters in both C s (6)-C82 and C2(5)-C82 feature a novel bonding structure with one thorium metal center connected by a C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C unit, forming an isosceles triangular configuration, which has not been hitherto observed for endohedral fullerenes or for solid phase thorium carbides. Electronic structure calculations assign a formal electronic structure of [Th4+(C2)2-]2+@[C82]2-, with pronounced donation bonding from (C2)2- to Th4+, secondary backbonding from the fullerene to thorium and Th-C double bond character in both compounds. This work presents a new family of endohedral fullerenes, MC2@C2n-2, being unexpected isomers of MC2n , and provides broader understanding of thorium bonding.

A Thorium(IV) metallacyclopropyne complex.

Project description:Actinide metallacyclic chemistry has been of interest due to its involvement in various chemical processes. However, fundamental understanding on the key species, actinide metallacyclic complexes, is limited to metallacyclopropenes whereas little is known about the actinide metallacyclopropynes presumably due to their unusual high reactivity. Herein, we report the preparation of a thorium metallacyclopropyne complex (η2-C ≡ C)ThCl3- in the gas phase by using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and it is generated via a single-ligand strategy through sequential losses of CO2 and HCl from the monopropynoate precursor (HC ≡ CCO2)ThCl4- upon collision-induced dissociation. Alternatively, the dual-ligand strategy involving consecutive losses of two CO2 and one C2H2 from the dipropynoate precursor (HC ≡ CCO2)2ThCl3- works as well. According to the reactivity experiments and theoretical calculations, (η2-C ≡ C)ThCl3- possesses a dianionic ligand C22- coordinated to the Th(IV) center in a side-on fashion. Further bonding analysis demonstrates the presence of a triple bond between the two C atoms, and the Th 5 f orbitals are significantly involved in the Th-(C ≡ C) bonding. A Th metallacyclopropyne structure is thus established for (η2-C ≡ C)ThCl3-.

Challenging the thorium-immobility paradigm.

Project description:Thorium is the most abundant actinide in the Earth's crust and has universally been considered one of the most immobile elements in natural aqueous systems. This view, however, is based almost exclusively on solubility data obtained at low temperature and their theoretical extrapolation to elevated temperature. The occurrence of hydrothermal deposits with high concentrations of Th challenges the Th immobility paradigm and strongly suggests that Th may be mobilized by some aqueous fluids. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that Th, indeed, is highly mobile at temperatures between 175 and 250 °C in sulfate-bearing aqueous fluids due to the formation of the highly stable Th(SO4)2 aqueous complex. The results of this study indicate that current models grossly underestimate the mobility of Th in hydrothermal fluids, and thus the behavior of Th in ore-forming systems and the nuclear fuel cycle needs to be re-evaluated.

Chemical toxicity of thorium in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Project description:Thorium (232Th), an actinoide element, is among the most common and naturally occurring radioactive materials distributed in our environment. Thorium has been used as a radiographic contrast agent (thorotrast) from 1930 to 1955, and many studies on its effects to the human body have been reported. Once thorium is injected in the body, the risk of cancer is increased by the direct bombardment from alpha-particle with high linear energy transfer during decay of Thorium. However, these many reports focus on the irradiation damage by long-term exposure of thorium. The acute toxicity of thorium is greater risk from the chemical toxicity than from the radiological toxicity. Here, we evaluated the effect of thorium from the stand point of chemical toxicity using yeast DNA microarray. In this experiment, genes that contribute to “C-compound and carbohydrate metabolism”, “energy”, and “cell rescue, defense and virulence” were significantly induced. These genes were classified into oxidative stress, glycogen and trehalose metabolism, sugar transport, and cell wall damage. On the contrary, only one gene related to DNA damage was detected. These results indicate that thorium causes the damage of cell wall and induces the oxidative stress. In order to overcome oxidative stress, yeast cells promote the glycogen and trehalose metabolisms and shift to anaerobic fermentation. Keywords: stress response
