Project description:SBA-15 and MCM-48 mesoporous silicas were modified with functionalized (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) by using the post-synthesis method, thus introducing N- and P-containing groups to the pore surface. The structure of the newly synthesized modifiers (aldimine and aminophosphonate derivatives of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and their grafting onto the porous matrix were proved by applying multinuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. The content of the grafted functional groups was determined via thermogravimetric analysis. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbent samples were studied by nitrogen physisorption and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of CO2 was measured in a dynamic CO2 adsorption regime. The modified silicas displayed an enhanced adsorption capacity compared to the initial material. The 13C NMR spectra with high-power proton decoupling proved the presence of physically captured CO2. A value of 4.60 mmol/g was achieved for the MCM-48 material grafted with the Schiff base residues. The total CO2 desorption was achieved at 40 °C. A slight decrease of about 5% in CO2 adsorption capacities was registered for the modified silicas in three adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating their performance stability.

Project description:The post-synthesis procedure for cyclic amine (morpholine and 1-methylpiperazine) modified mesoporous MCM-48 and SBA-15 silicas was developed. The procedure for preparation of the modified mesoporous materials does not affect the structural characteristics of the initial mesoporous silicas strongly. The initial and modified materials were characterized by XRD, N2 physisorption, thermal analysis, and solid-state NMR. The CO2 adsorption of the obtained materials was tested under dynamic and equilibrium conditions. The NMR data revealed the formation of different CO2 adsorbed forms. The materials exhibited high CO2 absorption capacity lying above the benchmark value of 2 mmol/g and stretching out to the outstanding 4.4 mmol/g in the case of 1-methylpiperazin modified MCM-48. The materials are reusable, and their CO2 adsorption capacities are slightly lower in three adsorption/desorption cycles.

Project description:Ceramic oxides nanofibers are promising materials as catalysts, electrodes and functional materials. In this report, a unique lamellar-like mesoporous structure was realized for the first time in a new system based on titania and alumina. The final structure was found to be highly dependent on the process conditions which are outlined herein. In view of the similar architecture we recently obtained with Fe-Al-O fibers, the pore formation mechanism we outline herein is general and is applicable to additional systems.

Project description:An investigation is performed into the efficiency of the Streptomyces griseus HUT 6037 enzyme immobilized in three different mesoporous silicas, namely mesoporous silica film, mesocellular foam, and rod-like SBA-15. It is shown that for all three supports, the pH value changes the surface charge and charge density and hence determines the maximum loading capacity of the enzyme. The products of the enzyme hydrolytic reaction are analyzed by 1H-NMR. The results show that among the three silica supports, the mesoporous silica film (with a channel length in the range of 60-100 nm) maximizes the accessibility of the immobilized enzyme. The loading capacity of the enzyme is up to 95% at pH 7 and the activity of the immobilized enzyme is maintained for more than 15 days when using a silica film support. The order of the activity of the enzyme immobilized in different mesoporous silica supports is: mesoporous silica film > mesocellular foam > rod-like SBA-15. Furthermore, the immobilized enzyme can be easily separated from the reaction solution via simple filtration or centrifugation methods and re-used for hydrolytic reaction as required.

Project description:The pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent (PSMC) algorithm and its extensions infer the coalescence time of two homologous chromosomes at each genomic position. This inference is used in reconstructing demographic histories, detecting selection signatures, studying genome-wide associations, constructing ancestral recombination graphs, and more. Inference of coalescence times between each pair of haplotypes in a large data set is of great interest, as they may provide rich information about the population structure and history of the sample. Here, we introduce a new method, Gamma-SMC, which is more than 10 times faster than current methods. To obtain this speed-up, we represent the posterior coalescence time distributions succinctly as a gamma distribution with just two parameters; in contrast, PSMC and its extensions hold these in a vector over discrete intervals of time. Thus, Gamma-SMC has constant time-complexity per site, without dependence on the number of discrete time states. Additionally, because of this continuous representation, our method is able to infer times spanning many orders of magnitude and, as such, is robust to parameter misspecification. We describe how this approach works, show its performance on simulated and real data, and illustrate its use in studying recent positive selection in the 1000 Genomes Project data set.

Project description:We report on the synthesis of optically transparent, mesoporous, monolithic diamond from periodic mesoporous carbon CMK-8 at a pressure of 21 GPa. The phase transformation is already complete at a mild synthesis temperature of 1,300 degrees C without the need of a catalyst. Surprisingly, the diamond is obtained as a mesoporous material despite the extreme pressure. X-ray diffraction, SEM, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Z-contrast experiments suggest that the mesoporous diamond is composed of interconnected diamond nanocrystals having diameters around 5-10 nm. The Brunauer Emmett Teller surface area was determined to be 33 m2 g(-1) according Kr sorption data. The mesostructure is diminished yet still detectable when the diamond is produced from CMK-8 at 1,600 degrees C and 21 GPa. The temperature dependence of the porosity indicates that the mesoporous diamond exists metastable and withstands transformation into a dense form at a significant rate due to its high kinetic inertness at the mild synthesis temperature. The findings point toward ultrahard porous materials with potential as mechanically highly stable membranes.

Project description:A novel method is demonstrated for ordered deposition of thin lamellar objects from a liquid environment onto solid substrates by solid/fluid/solid-driven organisation. Surface functionalisation forms a template pattern that accumulates the lamellar objects by site-selective wetting of the target area without the need for a physical fluid containment. Contrary to conventional handling methods, no mechanical contact occurs, which facilitates the ordered deposition without wrinkles or ruptures. An additive and a subtractive process for the creation of such templates are presented. The subtractive process starts with the complete silanisation of the substrate in the vapour phase followed by site-selective oxygen plasma treatment of the siloxane film. The additive process uses microcontact printing to transfer the target pattern. Both processes are characterised by optical inspection of the wetting contours and it is found that site-selective plasma treatment shows a better pattern fidelity. The patterns obtained by site-selective plasma treatment are also subject to ToF-SIMS analysis and show good chemical contrast between hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas. The ordered deposition of lamellar objects by this new method is demonstrated for 60?nm thick ultramicrotome sections of epoxide resin on pre-patterned glass substrates.

Project description:Metallic nanostructures have widespread applications in fields including materials science, electronics and catalysis. Mesoporous silica films synthesised by evaporation induced self-assembly and electrochemically assisted self-assembly with pores below 10 nm were used as hard templates for the electrodeposition of Au nanostructures. Electrodeposition conditions were optimised based on pore orientation and size. The growth of nanostructures was initiated at the electrode surface as confirmed by microscopy. The hard templates and Au electrodeposits were characterised electrochemically as well as with X-ray diffraction, small angle scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Finally, mesoporous silica hard templates were removed by hydrofluoric acid etching and stable Au nanoparticles on different electrode surfaces were achieved.

Project description:The layered architecture of stiff biological materials often endows them with surprisingly high fracture toughness in spite of their brittle ceramic constituents. Understanding the link between organic-inorganic layered architectures and toughness could help to identify new ways to improve the toughness of biomimetic engineering composites. We study the cylindrically layered architecture found in the spicules of the marine sponge Euplectella aspergillum. We cut micrometer-size notches in the spicules and measure their initiation toughness and average crack growth resistance using flexural tests. We find that while the spicule's architecture provides toughness enhancements, these enhancements are relatively small compared to prototypically tough biological materials, like nacre. We investigate these modest toughness enhancements using computational fracture mechanics simulations.

Project description:Low-cost mesoporous silicas of the SBA-15 family were prepared, aimed for removal of a broad spectrum of both cationic and anionic forms of hazardous metal pollutants (Cr(III, VI), Mn(II, VII), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II)) from environmental water. Series of mono- and bifunctional materials with immobilized ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (EDTA), primary amine (NH2), and quaternary ammonium (QAS) groups were prepared in a cost-efficient one-step synthesis using two silica sources, low-cost sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3 9H2O) and the conventional source-tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The functionalized SBA-15 samples obtained from both silica sources were highly ordered, as evidenced by TEM and SAXS data. All obtained materials were mesoporous with high surface area values of up to 745 m2/g, pore volumes from 0.99 to 1.44 cm3/g, and narrow pore distributions near 7 nm. The adsorption affinity of the EDTA-functionalized samples followed the common order Pb(II)> Cd(II)> Cu(II)> Cr(III)> Mn(II), which could be explained based on the Pearson theory. The highest adsorption capacities were observed for samples functionalized by EDTA groups using TEOS for synthesis (TEOS/EDTA): 195.6 mg/g for Pb(II), 111.2 mg/g for Cd(II), 58.7 mg/g for Cu(II), 57.7 mg/g for Cr(III), and 49.4 mg/g for Mn(II). Moreover, organic matter (humic acid up to 10 mg/L) and inorganic (Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), Ca(II), etc) macrocomponents present in environmental water had almost negligible effect on the removal of these cations. The NaSi/EDTA/NH2 sample revealed a better selectivity compared to the NaSi/NH2 sample towards such species as Cr(III), Mn(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II). The chromate-ions uptake at pH 7.5 by the TEOS/QAS sample turned practically unaffected by the presence of doubly charged anions (CO3 2-, SO4 2-). The content of functional groups on the surface of MS decreased only slightly (∼1-5%) after several regeneration cycles. The complete desorption of all heavy metal ions can be achieved using 1 mol/L EDTA solution. Reusability tests demonstrated the complete stability of the adsorbent for at least five to six consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles with no decrease in its adsorption characteristics compared to those obtained by 0.05 mol/L HNO3 treatments. The synthesized mesoporous materials were evaluated for removal of the heavy metal ions from drinking and different natural water samples, proving their potential as sustainable, effective, and cost-efficient adsorbents.
