ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(16)H(11)ClO, the dihedral angle between the almost planar dihydro-indene ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.009?Å) and the chloro-benzene ring is 3.51?(14)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected by C-H?O and weak C-H?Cl inter-actions, forming infinite layers parallel to (101).

Project description:In the title compound, C(18)H(16)O(3), the mean plane of the nine-membered indane system makes a dihedral angle of 3.71 (17)° with the benzene ring of the dimethoxy-phenyl group. The mol-ecular conformation is stabilized by intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen contacts. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions, which link neighbouring mol-ecules into one-dimensional extended chains along the [100] direction. In the structure, C-H⋯π inter-actions are also observed.

The mean plane of this ring system forms a dihedral angle of 3.73 (11)°, with the bromo-substituted benzene ring. In the crystal, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into sheets parallel to the ab plane and further stabilization is provided by weak C-H⋯π inter-actions involving the bromo-substituted benzene rings.

The torsion angles between the two meth-oxy groups and the -indanone ring are -14.67 (11) and -1.11 (12)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected into a ribbon along the a axis via weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯π and π-π [centroid-centroid distance = 3.7086 (6) Å] inter-actions are also observed.

Project description:The title chalcone, C18H16O3, was prepared by a solventless base-promoted Claisen-Schmidt condensation and, upon recrystallization from ethanol, obtained in 56% yield. The dihedral angle between the indanone ring system and the benzene ring is 2.54 (4) ° and the C atoms of the methoxy groups deviate from the benzene ring by 0.087 (1) and 0.114 (1) Å. In the crystal, π-stacking is the predominant inter-molecular force, with the mol-ecules stacking into columns running parallel to the b axis of the unit cell.
