ABSTRACT: Comparison of the types of Ixala klotsi (Sperry) and Pterospoda nigrescens (Hulst) shows that they are the same species, with Ixala klotsi a synonym of Pterospoda nigrescens. A lectotype of Selidosema nigrescens is designated, and the types of Selidosema nigrescens and Ixala klotsi are illustrated. Male and female habitus and genitalia of Pterospoda nigrescens are illustrated.

Project description:Based on genitalic studies, the new genus Pionenta is established for two taxa formerly placed under Antepione. The taxa hewesata and ochreata (and previously associated synonyms) are now synonomized as Pionenta ochreata. Three species of Antepione are now recognized: Antepione thisoaria, Antepione imitata, Antepione tiselaaria with the taxa comstocki, constans, and indiscretata synonomized under Antepione imitata. No new species are described. Adults and genitalia are illustrated, including type specimens.

Project description:The genus Biston Leach, 1815 is reviewed for China. Seventeen species are recognized, of which Biston mediolatasp. n. is described. Biston pustulata (Warren, 1896) and Biston panterinariaexanthemata (Moore, 1888) are newly recorded for China. The following new synonyms are established: Biston suppressaria suppressaria (Guenée, 1858) (= Biston suppressaria benescripta (Prout, 1915), syn. n. = Biston luculentus Inoue, 1992 syn. n.); Biston falcata (Warren, 1893) (= Amphidasiserilda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Amphidasis clorinda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Biston emarginaria Leech, 1897, syn. n.); Biston panterinaria panterinaria (Bremer & Grey, 1853) (= Biston panterinaria abraxata (Leech, 1889), syn. n. = Biston panterinaria lienpingensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n. = B. panterinaria szechuanensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n.). Biston falcata satura (Wehrli,1941), comb. n. is proposed. A key to Chinese Biston and diagnoses for Chinese species are provided. Illustrations of external features and genitalia are presented.

The genus Neotherina Dognin (Geometridae, Ennominae) in Costa Rica.

Project description:So far, two species of Neotherina Dognin have been recorded in Costa Rica. Neotherina imperilla (Dognin) occurs primarily at altitudes between 1100 and 1700 meters and Neotherina callas (Druce) which is widely distributed above 1100 meters. A third, new species, Neotherina xanthosa Sullivan and Chacón is described from altitudes above 2400 meters. Heterogeneity of the genus is discussed.

The Phyllodonta latrata (Guenee) species group in Costa Rica (Geometridae, Ennominae).

Project description:Historically, the name Phyllodonta latrata (Guenée) has been applied to what is a complex of three undescribed species in Costa Rica. They are very similar in maculation, but can be differentiated by genitalic characters and barcodes. P. alajuela Sullivan, sp. n. occurs at lower altitudes in the northwestern part of Costa Rica whereas P. intermediata Sullivan, sp. n. and P. esperanza Sullivan, sp. n. are found at partially overlapping altitudes in the central mountain ranges.

Geometrid caterpillar in Eocene Baltic amber (Lepidoptera, Geometridae).

Project description:Lepidoptera have little fossilization potential due to the presence of delicate structures and hence are exceptional findings, even in ambers that allow their preservation in sufficient detail for interpretation. From Eocene Baltic amber, the volumetrically largest known deposit of amber, there has been no reliable report of any member of the Macrolepidoptera (informal group of higher moths and all butterflies). Any such lepidopteran fossil would provide insight into evolutionary processes during the Eocene, long after flowering plants had completed their initial radiation. Here, we report on a first geometrid caterpillar from Baltic amber which is described as the oldest evidence for the subfamily Ennominae (tribe Boarmiini) and as one of the oldest records of the currently mega-diverse family. The new finding provides an important calibration point for molecular clock analyses within the family Geometridae and predates the basal divergence of Boarmiini from 32-38 to 44 Mya. It also predates the occurrence of this highly specialized form of caterpillar locomotion that allows for rapid movement.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Biston thoracicaria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Biston thoracicaria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is 15,538 bp in length, containing 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and an A + T-rich region. All PCGs initiate with typical start codon of ATN and share the complete stop codon of TAA, whereas cox1 starts with CGA. The ML analysis was performed using a dataset matrix containing 13 PCGs concatenated from the mitogenomes of Geometridae species. Our study presented the phylogenetic relationship of (Larentiinae + ((Sterrhinae + (Ennominae + Geometrinae))). Within the genera Biston, B. thoracicaria grouped with other species as the sister group.

The mitochondrial genome of Erannis ankeraria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae).

Project description:The measuring worm Erannis ankeraria belongs to the subfamily Ennominae of Geometridae. The mitogenome (GenBank accession number: MN046105) of E. ankeraria was sequenced, the new representative of the mitogenome of the subfamily. The nearly complete mitogenome is 15,250 bp totally, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs, and 22 transfer RNAs. All genes have the similar locations and strands with that of other published species of Geometridae. The nucleotide composition biases towards A and T, which together made up 79.3% of the entirety. Bayesian inference analysis strongly supported the monophyly of Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea, Papilionoidea, Pyraloidea, and Tortricoidea were strongly supported. This result also suggested that the Geometroidea was the sister to Bombycoidea, and then Noctuoidea was assigned to the sister group to the clade of Geometroidea + Bombycoidea, and then Pyraloidea was the sister group to the clade that contains Geometroidea, Bombycoidea, and Noctuoidea, and then Papilionoidea was the sister group to the clade that contains these four superfamilies mentioned above.
