One-pot synthesis of polyrotaxanes via acyclic diene metathesis polymerization of supramolecular monomers.

ABSTRACT: A one-pot synthesis of polyrotaxanes has been developed. The method employs a supramolecular monomer comprising a polymerizable ammonium salt and crown ether, in combination with dynamic ADMet polymerization. Ultimately, highly efficient complexation, polymerization, and end-capping were accomplished in a single operation to yield polyrotaxanes with M(w) up to 19.3 kDa and >80% of the repeat units being complexed.

Stereocontrolled acyclic diene metathesis polymerization.

Project description:The cis/trans geometry of olefins is known to dramatically influence the thermal and mechanical properties of polyalkenamers. Yet, polymerization methods that efficiently control this parameter are scarce. Here we report the development of a stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization that uses the reactivity of dithiolate Ru carbenes combined with cis monomers. These Ru catalysts exhibit exquisite retention of the cis geometry and tolerate many polar functional groups, enabling the synthesis of all-cis polyesters, polycarbonates, polyethers and polysulfites. The stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization is also characterized by low catalyst loadings and tolerance towards trans impurities in the monomer batch, which should facilitate large-scale implementation. Modulation of the reaction temperature and time leads to an erosion of stereoretention, permitting a stereocontrolled synthesis of polyalkenamers with predictable cis:trans ratios. The impact of the stereochemistry of the repeating alkenes on the thermal properties is clearly demonstrated through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis.

Ferrocene-Containing Conjugated Oligomers Synthesized by Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polymerization.

Project description:A series of conjugated, symmetrical, and ferrocene-containing main-chain monomers was prepared following a gentle coupling reaction. Ferrocene-containing oligomers with all-trans-configured vinylene bonds could be synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. These oligomers had a larger Stokes shift (2400 to 2600 cm-1) and both exhibited stable and reversible electrochemistry. Meanwhile, the copolymerization of 1,1'-bis[1-methyl-2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethenyl]ferrocene with 2,7-divinyl-9,9-dioctylfluorene was achieved. The structurally regular copolymers proved their optical and electrochemical properties. The fluorescence intensity of the copolymer gradually enhanced with the increasing number of fluorene units. At the same time, it was also found that the color of the copolymers had a significant change from yellow-green to red.

Synthesis of High-Molecular-Weight Biobased Aliphatic Polyesters by Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polymerization in Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of an α,ω-diene monomer of bis(undec-10-enoate) with isosorbide (M1) using a RuCl2(IMesH2)(CH-2-O i Pr-C6H4) (HG2, IMesH2 = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) catalyst and conducted at 50 °C (in vacuo) in ionic liquids (ILs) afforded higher-molecular-weight polymers (P1, M n = 32 200-39 200) than those reported previously (M n = 5600-14700). 1-n-Butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim]PF6) and 1-n-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Hmim]TFSI) were suitable as effective solvents among a series of imidazolium salts and the pyridinium salts. The polymerization of α,ω-diene monomers of bis(undec-10-enoate) with isomannide (M2), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (M3), and 1,4-butanediol (M4) in [Bmim]PF6 and [Hmim]TFSI also afforded the higher-molecular-weight polymers. The M n values in the resultant polymers did not decrease even under the scale-up conditions (300 mg to 1.0 g scale, M1, M2, and M4) in the polymerizations in [Hmim]TFSI; the subsequent reaction of P1 with ethylene (0.8 MPa, 50 °C, and 5 h) gave oligomers (proceeded via depolymerization). Tandem hydrogenation of the resultant unsaturated polymers (P1) in a [Bmim]PF6-toluene biphasic system upon the addition of Al2O3 (1.0 MPa H2 at 50 °C) gave the corresponding saturated polymers (HP1), which waswere isolated by a phase separation in the toluene layer. The [Bmim]PF6 layer containing the ruthenium catalyst could be recycled without a decrease in the activity/selectivity of the olefin hydrogenation at least eight times.

Project description:Acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of biobased α,ω-dienes of bis(undec-10-enoate) with diols (1,4-butanediol, isosorbide, isomannide, and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol) afforded high-molecular weight unsaturated polyesters, and subsequent tandem hydrogenation (H2 1.0 MPa, 50 °C, 3 h) gave the saturated polymers upon addition of a small amount of Al2O3 (1.0-1.7 wt %). Subsequent reaction of the unsaturated polymers with ethylene afforded the oligomers (by depolymerization and degradation).

cis-Selective Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polymerization of α,ω-Dienes.

Project description:The cis/trans stereochemistry of repeating alkenes in polymers provides a powerful handle to modulate the thermal and mechanical properties of these soft materials, but synthetic methods to precisely dictate this parameter remain scarce. We report herein a cis-selective acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of readily available α,ω-diene monomers with high functional group tolerance. Identification of a highly stereoselective cyclometalated Ru catalyst allowed the synthesis of a broad array of polymers with cis contents up to 99%. This platform was leveraged to study the impact of the cis geometry on the thermal and mechanical properties of polyalkenamers, including an ABA triblock copolymer synthesized via extension of a cis-rich telechelic polyoctenamer with d,l-lactide. These results suggest that cis-selective ADMET affords an efficient strategy to tune the properties of a variety of polymers.

Synthesis of Precision Poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s via Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polycondensation.

Project description:Fully saturated, aliphatic polymers containing adamantane moieties evenly distributed along the polymer backbone are of great interest due to their exceptional thermal stability, yet more synthetic strategies toward these polymers would be desirable. Herein, we report for the first time the synthesis of poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s based on α,ω-dienes containing bulky 1,3-adamantylene defects precisely located on every 11th, 17th, 19th, and 21st chain carbon via acyclic diene metathesis polycondensation. All saturated polymers revealed excellent thermal stabilities (452-456 °C) that were significantly higher compared to those of structurally similar polyolefins with aliphatic or aromatic ring systems in the backbone of polyethylene (PE). Their crystallinity increases successively from shorter to longer CH2 chains between the adamantane defects. The adamantanes were located in the PE crystals distorting the PE unit cell by the incorporation of the adamantane defect at the kinks of a terrace arrangement. Precise positioning of structural defects within the polymeric backbone provides various opportunities to customize material properties by "defect engineering" in soft polymeric materials.

Project description:Synthesis of new polyesters by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene, 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenyl 10-undecenoate (M1), prepared from bio-renewable eugenol and castor oil (undecenoate), have been demonstrated. Ruthenium-carbene (called second generation Grubbs) catalyst afforded polymers with unimodal molecular weight distributions (M n = 12 700, M w/M n = 1.85). The polymerization in the presence of a triarm cross-linker, 5-formylbenzene-1,2,3-triyl tris(undec-10-enoate), also afforded polymers with certain uniform network structures.

One-pot synthesis of brush-like polymers via integrated ring-opening metathesis polymerization and polymerization of amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides.

Project description:We report here the integration of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and ring-opening polymerization of the amino acid N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) to allow facile synthesis of brush-like polymers containing polypeptide as the brush side chains. ROMP of N-trimethylsilyl norbornenes rendered the preparation of poly(norbornene)s bearing pendant N-TMS groups. With no need to purify the resulting polymers, such macromolecular initiators could subsequently initiate controlled NCA polymerizations. Brush-like poly(norbornene)s with grafted polypeptides or block copolypeptides were readily obtained with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Because numerous ROMP and NCA monomers are widely available, this novel polymerization technique will allow easy access to numerous brush-like hybrid macromolecules with unprecedented properties and broad applications.

One-pot isomerization-cross metathesis-reduction (ICMR) synthesis of lipophilic tetrapeptides.

Project description:An efficient, versatile and rapid method toward homologue series of lipophilic tetrapeptide derivatives (herein, the opioid peptides H-TIPP-OH and H-DIPP-OH) is reported. High atom economy and a minimal number of synthetic steps resulted from a one-pot tandem isomerization-cross metathesis-reduction sequence (ICMR), applicable both in solution and solid phase methodology. The broadly applicable synthesis proceeds with short reaction times and simple work-up, as illustrated in this work for alkylated opioid tetrapeptides.

One-Pot Synthesis of Melt-Processable Supramolecular Soft Actuators.

Project description:The application of reprocessable and reprogrammable soft actuators is limited by the synthetic strategies, 3D-shaping capabilities, and small deformations. In this work, melt-processable supramolecular soft actuators based on segmented copolymers containing thiourethane and liquid crystal segments have been prepared via sequential thiol addition reactions in a one-pot approach using commercially available building blocks. The actuators demonstrated immediate, reversible response and weightlifting capabilities with large deformations up to 32 %. Through exploiting the supramolecular cross-links, the material could be recycled and reprogrammed into 3D actuators and welded into an actuator assembly with different deformation modes. Our work offers a one-pot synthesis and straightforward melt-processable approach to prepare supramolecular soft actuators with large deformations that can be reprocessed and reprogrammed into arbitrary 3D shapes.
