The low-temperature structure of diethyl ether magnesium oxybromide.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the title compound, hexa-?(2)-bromido-?(4)-oxido-tetra-kis-[(diethyl ether)magnesium], [Mg(4)Br(6)O(C(4)H(10)O)(4)], determined from data measured at 173?K, differs from the previously known structure of diethyl ether magnesium oxybromide, which was determined from room-temperature data [Stucky & Rundle (1964 ?). J. Am. Chem. Soc. 86, 4821-4825]. The title compound crystallizes in the tetra-gonal space group I[Formula: see text], whereas the previously known structure crystallizes in a different tetra-gonal space group, namely P[Formula: see text]2(1)c. Both molecules have crystallographic [Formula: see text] symmetry and show almost identical geometric parameters for the Mg, Br and O atoms. The crystal of the title compound turned out to be a merohedral twin emulating a structure with apparent Laue symmetry 4/mmm, whereas the correct Laue group is just 4/m. The fractional contribution of the minor twin component converged to 0.462?(1).

The asymmetric unit comprises one half-mol-ecule, the structural dimeric unit being generated by inversion symmetry with an Mg?Mg distance of 3.469?(2)?Å. The Mg(II) atom exhibits a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry. The crystal packing is defined by van der Waals inter-actions only.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, [Mg2Br2(C9H11)2(C4H10O)2], features a centrosymmetric two-centre magnesium complex with half a mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The Mg atom is in a considerably distorted Br2CO coordination. Bond lengths and angles are comparable with already published values. The crystal packing is stabilized by C-H⋯π inter-actions linking the complexes into sheets parallel to (0-11).

Crystal structure of (diethyl ether-κO)[5,10,15,20-tetra-kis-(2-iso-thio-cyanato-phen-yl)porphyrinato-κ4 N]zinc diethyl ether solvate.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, [Zn(C48H24N8S4)(C4H10O)]·C4H10O, consists of discrete porphyrin complexes that are located on a twofold rotation axis. The ZnII cation is fivefold coordinated by four N atoms of the porphyrin moiety and one O atom of a diethyl ether mol-ecule in a slightly distorted square-pyramidal environment with the diethyl ether mol-ecule in the apical position. The porphyrin backbone is nearly planar with the metal cation slightly shifted out of the plane towards the coordinating diethyl ether mol-ecule. All four iso-thio-cyanato groups of the phenyl substituents at the meso-positions face the same side of the porphyrin, as is characteristic for picket fence porphyrins. In the crystal structure, the discrete porphyrin complexes are arranged in such a way that cavities are formed in which additional diethyl ether solvate mol-ecules are located around a twofold rotation axis. The O atom of the solvent mol-ecule is not positioned exactly on the twofold rotation axis, thus making the whole mol-ecule equally disordered over two symmetry-related positions.

Exogenous diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate ameliorates low temperature stress by improving nitrogen metabolism in maize seedlings.

Project description:Spring maize sowing occurs during a period of low temperature (LT) in Northeast China, and the LT suppresses nitrogen (N) metabolism and photosynthesis, further reducing dry matter accumulation. Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6) improves N metabolism; hence, we studied the effects of DA-6 on maize seedlings under LT conditions. The shoot and root fresh weight and dry weight decreased by 17.70%~20.82% in the LT treatment, and decreased by 5.81%~13.57% in the LT + DA-6 treatment on the 7th day, respectively. Exogenous DA-6 suppressed the increases in ammonium (NH4+) content and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity, and suppressed the decreases in nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) contents, and activities of nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT) and transaminase activities. NiR activity was most affected by DA-6 under LT conditions. Additionally, exogenous DA-6 suppressed the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) decrease, and the suppressed the increases of superoxide anion radical (O2·-) generation rate and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content. Taken together, our results suggest that exogenous DA-6 mitigated the repressive effects of LT on N metabolism by improving photosynthesis and modulating oxygen metabolism, and subsequently enhanced the LT tolerance of maize seedlings.

Diethyl Ether Conversion to Ethene and Ethanol Catalyzed by Heteropoly Acids.

Project description:The conversion of diethyl ether (DEE) to ethene and ethanol was studied at a gas-solid interface over bulk and supported Brønsted solid acid catalysts based on tungsten Keggin heteropoly acids (HPAs) at 130-250 °C and ambient pressure. The yield of ethene increased with increasing reaction temperature and reached 98% at 220-250 °C (WHSV = 2.2 h-1). The most active HPA catalysts were silica-supported H3PW12O40 and H4SiW12O40 and the bulk heteropoly salt Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40. The HPA catalysts outperformed zeolites HZSM-5 and USY reported elsewhere. A correlation between catalyst activity and catalyst acid strength was established, which indicates that Brønsted acid sites play an important role in DEE elimination over HPA catalysts. The results point to the reaction occurring through the consecutive reaction pathway: DEE → C2H4 + EtOH followed by EtOH → C2H4 + H2O, where ethene is both a primary product of DEE elimination and a secondary product via dehydration of the primary product EtOH. Evidence is provided that DEE elimination over bulk HPA and high-loaded HPA/SiO2 catalysts proceeds via the surface-type mechanism.

Project description:The title compound, [Sn(2)Cl(6)(OH)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]·2C(4)H(10)O, consists of a centrosymmetric molecule and two additional solvent molecules and has an infinite two-dimensional network extending parallel to (101). The Sn atom is six-coordinate with a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Additional O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding leads to stabilization of the crystal structure.

Towards a Comprehensive Characterization of the Low-Temperature Autoxidation of Di-n-Butyl Ether.

Project description:In the present study, we investigated the oxidation of 2500 ppm of di-n-butyl ether under fuel-rich conditions (φ = 2) at low temperatures (460-780 K), a residence time of 1 s, and 10 atm. The experiments were carried out in a fused silica jet-stirred reactor. Oxidation products were identified and quantified in gas samples by gas chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Samples were also trapped through bubbling in cool acetonitrile for high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses. 2,4-dinitro-phenylhydrazine was used to derivatize carbonyl products and distinguish them from other isomers. HPLC coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap Q-Exactive®) allowed for the detection of oxygenated species never observed before, i.e., low-temperature oxidation products (C8H12O4,6, C8H16O3,5,7, and C8H18O2,5) and species that are more specific products of atmospheric oxidation, i.e., C16H34O4, C11H24O3, C11H22O3, and C10H22O3. Flow injection analyses indicated the presence of high molecular weight oxygenated products (m/z > 550). These results highlight the strong similitude in terms of classes of oxidation products of combustion and atmospheric oxidation, and through autoxidation processes. A kinetic modeling of the present experiments indicated some discrepancies with the present data.

Temperature dependence of amorphous magnesium carbonate structure studied by PDF and XAFS analyses.

Project description:Mineral trapping through the precipitation of carbonate minerals is a potential approach to reduce CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere. The temperature dependence of amorphous magnesium carbonate (AMC), a precursor of crystalline magnesium carbonate hydrates, was investigated using synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments with atomic pair distribution function (PDF) and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. PDF analysis revealed that there were no substantial structural differences among the AMC samples synthesized at 20, 60, and 80 °C. In addition, the medium-range order of all three AMC samples was very similar to that of hydromagnesite. Stirring in aqueous solution at room temperature caused the AMC sample to hydrate immediately and form a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network. Consequently, it crystallized with the long-range structural order of nesquehonite. The Mg K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectrum of AMC prepared at 20 °C was very similar to that of nesquehonite, implying that the electronic structure and coordination geometry of Mg atoms in AMC synthesized at 20 °C are highly similar to those in nesquehonite. Therefore, the short-range order (coordination environment) around the Mg atoms was slightly modified with temperature, but the medium-range order of AMC remained unchanged between 20 and 80 °C.

Heterogeneous Parahydrogen-Induced Polarization of Diethyl Ether for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Applications.

Project description:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the use of hyperpolarized gases as contrast agents provides valuable information on lungs structure and function. While the technology of 129 Xe hyperpolarization for clinical MRI research is well developed, it requires the expensive equipment for production and detection of hyperpolarized 129 Xe. Herein we present the 1 H hyperpolarization of diethyl ether vapor that can be imaged on any clinical MRI scanner. 1 H nuclear spin polarization of up to 1.3 % was achieved using heterogeneous hydrogenation of ethyl vinyl ether with parahydrogen over Rh/TiO2 catalyst. Liquefaction of diethyl ether vapor proceeds with partial preservation of hyperpolarization and prolongs its lifetime by ≈10 times. The proof-of-principle 2D 1 H MRI of hyperpolarized diethyl ether was demonstrated with 0.1×1.1 mm2 spatial and 120 ms temporal resolution. The long history of use of diethyl ether for anesthesia is expected to facilitate the clinical translation of the presented approach.

μ-Methyl-ene-bis-[di-bromido(diethyl ether-κO)aluminium(III)]: crystal structure and chemical exchange in solution.

Project description:In the title compound, [Al2Br4(CH2)(C4H10O)2], the mol-ecule lies on a crystallographic twofold axis passing through the bridging C atom. Each AlIII atom is four-coordinate, being bonded to two bromide ions, bridging the CH2 group as well as the oxygen atom of a diethyl ether ligand in a slightly distorted tetra-hedral arrangement with angles ranging from 101.52 (8) to 116.44 (5)°. The Al-CH2-Al angle, 118.4 (2)°, is the smallest observed for a structure where this moiety is not part of a ring. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯Br inter-actions, characterized as R 2 2(12) rings, link the mol-ecules into ribbons in the [101] direction. The title compound is monomeric and coordinatively saturated in the solid state, as each aluminum is four-coordinate, but in solution the ether mol-ecules from either or both Al atoms can dissociate, and would be expected to rapidly exchange, and this is supported by NMR data.
