ABSTRACT: Camptochaeta prolixasp. n. (Diptera, Sciaridae) is described from caves in Nevada, and three other congeneric species are recorded from caves in Nevada and Arkansas, United States. The new species shows some indication to a subterranean mode of life, including long antenna and legs, and in some specimens, reduction of the eye bridge.

Project description:The taxonomy of the genus Peyerimhoffia Kieffer in China was studied. Eight species were recognized, including seven new species that are herein described and illustrated: P. hamata sp. n., P. obesa sp. n., P. sparsula sp. n., P. longiprojecta sp. n., P. brachypodua sp. n., P. yunnana sp. n., and P. shennongjiana sp. n. In addition, P. vagabunda (Winnertz, 1867) is reported for the first time from China. A key to these Chinese species is provided.

Project description:Background:The genus Neocheiridium Beier, 1932 currently contains seven Neotropical (including Caribbean) and two Afrotropical species, with no Nearctic records. New information:An undescribed species of Neocheiridium from South Carolina was discovered in the Ohio State University Acarology Collection and is described as Neocheiridium gullahorum, n. sp. (based on specimens of both sexes). A key to known world species of Neocheiridium is proposed.

Ctenosciara alexanderkoenigi sp. n. (Diptera: Sciaridae), an exotic invader in Germany?

Project description:A new species of the genus Ctenosciara Tuomikoski, 1960 is here described based upon a single specimen, obtained from collectings in the garden at Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. Ctenosciara alexanderkoenigi sp. n. differs from all other congeneric European species by its striking coloration and distinct male genitalia. However, DNA barcoding reveals associations with two specimens from New Zealand. Therefore a recent migration of Ctenosciara species from the Australasian Region, the likely center of origin of the genus, is discussed. A key to the European species of Ctenosciara is provided. Barcoding results reveale that Ctenosciara exigua is not clearly distinguished from Ctenosciara hyalipennis by its COI sequence (both share the same BIN BOLD:AAH3983) and that its species status may be questionable.

The Genus <i>Spinopygina</i> gen. nov. (Diptera, Sciaridae) from Western North America: Preliminary Molecular Phylogeny and Description of Seven New Species.

Project description:The genus Spinopygina gen. nov. (type species Camptochaeta uniceps Hippa & Vilkamaa, 1994) from western North America is described. The genus includes the following eight species: Spinopygina acerfalx sp. nov.; S. aurifera sp. nov.; S. camura sp. nov.; S. edura sp. nov.; S. peltata sp. nov.; S. plena sp. nov.; S. quadracantha sp. nov.; and S. uniceps (Hippa & Vilkamaa, 1994) comb. nov., transferred from Corynoptera Winnertz. The new species are described and Spinopygina uniceps is re-diagnosed. The species are keyed and illustrated. In the maximum-likelihood phylogenetic hypothesis based on four gene fragments (28S, 18S, 16S and COI), Spinopygina gen. nov. appears as the sister group of Claustropyga Hippa, Vilkamaa & Mohrig, 2003. In the same analysis, a remarkable, undescribed species is placed within Camptochaeta Hippa & Vilkamaa clade.

Dramatic nucleolar dispersion in the salivary gland of Schwenkfeldina sp. (Diptera: Sciaridae).

Project description:Micronucleoli are among the structures composing the peculiar scenario of the nucleolus in salivary gland nuclei of dipterans representative of Sciaridae. Micronucleolar bodies contain ribosomal DNA and RNA, are transcriptionally active and may appear free in the nucleoplasm or associated with specific chromosome regions in salivary gland nuclei. This report deals with an extreme case of nucleolar fragmentation/dispersion detected in the salivary gland of Schwenkfeldina sp. Such a phenomenon in this species was found to be restricted to cell types undergoing polyteny and seems to be differentially controlled according to the cell type. Furthermore, transcriptional activity was detected in virtually all the micronucleolar bodies generated in the salivary gland. The relative proportion of the rDNA in polytene and diploid tissues showed that rDNA under-replication did not occur in polytene nuclei suggesting that the nucleolar and concomitant rDNA dispersion in Schwenkfeldina sp. may reflect a previously hypothesised process in order to counterbalance the rDNA loss due to the under-replication. The chromosomal distribution of epigenetic markers for the heterochromatin agreed with early cytological observations in this species suggesting that heterochromatin is spread throughout the chromosome length of Schwenkfeldina sp. A comparison made with results from another sciarid species argues for a role played by the heterochromatin in the establishment of the rDNA topology in polytene nuclei of Sciaridae.

Project description:Seven species of Keilbachia Mohrig are recognized, and among them, two new species, Keilbachia subacumina Wu & Zhang, sp. n. and Keilbachia fengyangensis Wu & Zhang, sp. n. are described and illustrated. Five species, Keilbachia orthonema, Keilbachia flagrispina, Keilbachia demssia, Keilbachia oligonema and Keilbachia acumina are reported for the first time from China. A key to the 15 Chinese species of this genus is also provided.

Description of Sergentomyia phadangensis n. sp. (Diptera, Psychodidae) of Thailand.

Project description:Since 1996, there are emerging autochthonous cases of leishmaniasis in Thailand due to Leishmania "siamensis" and to L. martiniquensis explaining a recent interest for the sand fly fauna where Sergentomyia gemmea and Se. barraudi have been considered possible vectors in the country.Field studies were undertaken in a cave of Phitsanulok Province, Thailand. Phlebotomine sandflies have been studied morphologically and some have been processed for molecular biology (sequencing of cytB rDNA).A new species of sand fly, belonging to the genus Sergentomyia: Se. phadangensis n. sp., is described. The association of the male and female is supported by the homology of the sequences of cytochrome b rDNA.The description of a new species in Thailand is of importance in view of the existence of autochthonous leishmaniases.

On the genus Polypedilum, subgenus Collartomyia, with description of P. (Col.) baishanzuensis sp. nov. from Baishanzu Nature Reserve, China (Diptera, Chironomidae)

Project description:Abstract A new species of the genus Polypedilum Kieffer, 1912 is described from Baishanzu Nature Reserve, China, based on molecular and morphological data. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on standard barcode sequences confirmed a new clade of Polypedilum (Collartomyia) species. The new species is easily distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological characters: membrane of wing with a large spot occupying 70% of the proximal area; tergite without dark brown band pigmentation; tarsi I–V dark brown; superior volsella with three outer lateral setae and six long setae along inner base; inferior volsella with setose tubercules. An updated key to adult males of the subgenus Collartomyia is also provided.

Peyerimhoffiajaschhoforum (Diptera, Sciaridae), a new deadwood inhabiting species from Canada.

Project description:A new species of black fungus gnat from Canada, Peyerimhoffiajaschhoforum sp. n., is presented with a description, illustrations, biotope information and a brief discussion of the placement and concept of the genus Peyerimhoffia. P.jaschhoforum is characterized by a unique gonostylar structure where the apex is hollowed but not enclosed and contains a mass of mega setae housed within. P.jaschhoforum was reared from decomposing jack pine (Pinusbanksiana Lamb.) deadwood using both in-situ and ex-situ photoeclectors. We documented three additional specimens originating from Fennoscandia that resemble P.jaschhoforum but differ based on a broader tegmen, placement of setigerous papillae behind the tegmen and the fused intercoxal area. Based on this, these specimens are assigned to a new subspecies, Peyerimhoffiajaschhoforumfennoscandica ssp. n.

Com1847618plete mitochondrial genome of <i>Pnyxia scabiei</i> (Diptera: Sciaridae).

Project description:The potato scab-gnat, Pnyxia scabiei, was recorded as a pest attacking potato tubers and greenhouse cucumber plants. The mitochondrial genome of a total length of 15,437 bp was sequenced, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes with A + T content of 77.2%. Six gene overlaps were found from 1 to 34 bp. Phylogenetic analysis showed that P. scabiei was closely related to Trichosia lengersdorfi + Sciara ruficauda. The study provided further data for species diversification in Sciaridae.
