2,2'-[2,4-Bis(naphthalen-1-yl)cyclo-butane-1,3-di-yl]bis-(1-methyl-pyridinium) diiodide: thermal-induced [2?+?2] cyclo-addition reaction of a heterostilbene.

ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(36)H(32)N(2) (2+)·2I(-), consists of one half-mol-ecule of the cation and one I(-) anion. The cation is located on an inversion centre. The dihedral angle between the pyridinium ring and the naphthalene ring system in the asymmetric unit is 19.01?(14)°. In the crystal, the cations and the anions are linked by C-H?I inter-actions into a layer parallel to the bc plane. Intra- and inter-molecular ?-? inter-actions with centroid-centroid distances of 3.533?(2)-3.807?(2)?Å are also observed.

Project description:The title mol-ecule, C(24)H(14)N(4)O(2), lies on an inversion centre and the asymmetric unit containg one half-mol-ecule. The naphthalene ring systems are twisted slightly with respect to the oxadiazole rings, making a dihedral angle of 1.36?(6)°. These mol-ecules are ?-stacked along the crystallographic a axis, with an inter-planar distance of 3.337?(1)?Å. Adjacent mol-ecules are slipped from the 'ideal' cofacial ?-stack in both the long and short mol-ecular axis (the long mol-ecular axis is defined as the line through the naphthalene C atom in the 6-position and the mol-ecular center, the short mol-ecular axis is in the mol-ecular plane perpendicular to it). Project description:A new ion-pair complex, (C16H14N)2[Ni(C4N2S2)2] or (1-NaMePy)2[Ni(imnt)2], where 1-NaMePy is 1-(4-naphthyl-methyl-ene)pyridinium and imnt is 2,2-di-cyano-ethene-1,1-di-thiol-ate, was obtained by the direct reaction of NiCl2, K2imnt and (1-NaMePy)(+)Br(-) in H2O. The asymmetric unit contains a [1-NaMePy](+) cation and one half of an Ni(imnt)2 (2-) anion. The Ni(II) ion lies on an inversion centre and adopts a square-planar configuration with Ni-S bond lengths of 2.200?(1) and 2.216?(1)?Å. In the [1-NaMePy](+) cation, the naphthyl ringsystem and the pyridinium ring make a dihedral angle of 90.0?(2)°. In the crystal, C-H?N and C-H?Ni hydrogen bonds, as well as ?-? inter-actions between the chelate ring and the pyridinium ring [centroid-centroid distance = 3.675?(2)?Å] link the ions into a three-dimensional network.

The 2-(2,4-dinitro-benz-yl)pyridinium cations are linked to these chains through pyridinium-water N-H?O hydrogen bonds and a two-dimensional network is formed through water bridges between sulfonate and 2-nitro O atoms, while the structure also has weak cation-anion ?-? aromatic ring inter-actions [minimum ring centroid separation = 3.8441?(13)?Å].
