Adenosine is a metabolite generated and released from cells, particularly under injury or stress. It elicits protective or damaging responses via signaling through the adenosine receptors, including the adenylyl cyclase inhibitory A(1) and A(3), and the adenylyl cyclase stimulatory A(2A) and A(2B).
