A cobalt complex of a microbial arene oxidation product.

ABSTRACT: We report the first synthesis of a cobalt Cp diene complex wherein the diene is derived by microbial dearomatising dihydroxylation of an aromatic ring. The complex has been characterised crystallographically and its structure is compared to that of an uncomplexed diene precursor.

Paramagnetic Properties and Moderately RapidConformational Dynamics in the Cobalt(II) Calix[4]arene Complex by NMR.

Project description:1H NMR measurements are reported for the CD2Cl2/CDCl3 solutions of the Co(II) calix[4]arenetetraphosphineoxide complex (I). Temperature dependences of the 1H NMR spectra of I have been analyzed using the line shape analysis, taking into account the temperature variation of paramagnetic chemical shifts, within the frame of the dynamic NMR method. Conformational dynamics of the 2:1 Co(II) calix[4]arene complexes was conditioned by the pinched cone ↔pinched cone interconversion of I (with activation Gibbs energy ΔG≠(298K) = 40 ± 3 kJ/mol. Due to substantial temperature dependence of paramagnetic shifts, complex I can be used as model compound for designing an NMR thermosensor reagent for local temperature monitoring.

A Calix[4]arene-Based Cyclic Dinuclear Ruthenium Complex for Light-Driven Catalytic Water Oxidation.

Project description:A cyclic dinuclear ruthenium(bda) (bda: 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) complex equipped with oligo(ethylene glycol)-functionalized axial calix[4]arene ligands has been synthesized for homogenous catalytic water oxidation. This novel Ru(bda) macrocycle showed significantly increased catalytic activity in chemical and photocatalytic water oxidation compared to the archetype mononuclear reference [Ru(bda)(pic)2 ]. Kinetic investigations, including kinetic isotope effect studies, disclosed a unimolecular water nucleophilic attack mechanism of this novel dinuclear water oxidation catalyst (WOC) under the involvement of the second coordination sphere. Photocatalytic water oxidation with this cyclic dinuclear Ru complex using [Ru(bpy)3 ]Cl2 as a standard photosensitizer revealed a turnover frequency of 15.5 s-1 and a turnover number of 460. This so far highest photocatalytic performance reported for a Ru(bda) complex underlines the potential of this water-soluble WOC for artificial photosynthesis.

Nickel, manganese, cobalt, and iron-catalyzed deprotonative arene dimerization.

Project description:A number of first-row transition metal salts catalyze deprotonative dimerization of acidic arenes. Under the atmosphere of oxygen, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and iron chlorides have been shown to dimerize five- and six-membered ring heterocycles as well as electron-poor arenes. Both tetramethylpiperidide and dicyclohexylamide bases can be employed; however, the former afford slightly higher yields.

Intramolecular hydrogen-bonding in a cobalt aqua complex and electrochemical water oxidation activity.

Project description:Water oxidation is catalysed in Nature by a redox cofactor embedded in a hydrogen-bonded network designed to orchestrate proton transfer throughout the challenging 4 electron reaction. In order to mimic aspects of this microenvironment, [CoLDMA(CH3CN)2][BF4]2 (2) was synthesized, where LDMA is a dipyridyldiamine ligand with two dimethylamine bases in the secondary coordination sphere. Structural characterization of the corresponding aqua complexes establish hydrogen bonding between the bound water and pendant base(s). Cyclic voltammetry of [CoLDMA(CH3CN)2][BF4]2 (2) reveals enhanced oxidative current upon titration with water and controlled potential electrolysis confirms evolution of O2. The related complex [CoLH(CH3CN)2][BF4]2 (1), which has the same primary coordination environment as 2 but lacks pendant bases, is inactive. The structural and electrochemical studies illustrate the role positioned proton relays can play in promoting redox reactivity.

Oxygenation of cobalt porphyrinates: coordination or oxidation?

Project description:The X-ray characterization of the five-coordinate picket-fence porphyrin complex, [Co(TpivPP)(2-MeHIm)], is reported. The complex has the displacement of cobalt from the porphyrin plane = 0.15 A, and Co-N(Im) = 2.145(3) and (Co-N(p))(av) = 1.979(3) A. This five-coordinate complex, in the presence of dioxygen and excess 2-methylimidazole, undergoes an unanticipated, photoinitiated atropisomerization of the porphyrin ligand, oxidation of cobalt(II), and the formation of the neutral cobalt(III) complex [Co(alpha,alpha,beta,beta-TpivPP)(2-MeHIm)(2-MeIm(-)]. Two distinct examples of this complex have been structurally characterized, and both have structural parameters consistent with cobalt(III). The two new Co(III) porphyrin complexes have axial Co-N(Im) distances ranging from 1.952 to 1.972 A, but which allow for the distinction between imidazole and imidazolate. An interesting intermolecular hydrogen bonding network is observed that leads to infinite helical chains. UV-vis spectroscopic study suggests that [Co(TpivPP)(2-MeHIm)(O(2))] is an intermediate state for the oxidation reaction and that the atropisomerization process is photocatalyzed. A reaction route is proposed based on the spectroscopic studies.

Rapid solvent-evaporation strategy for three-dimensional cobalt-based complex hierarchical architectures as catalysts for water oxidation.

Project description:It is a challenging task to seek a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water splitting. Non-noble Co-based nanomaterials are considered as earth-abundant and effective catalysts to lower overpotential and increase polarization current density of OER. In this work, we reported, for the first time, a "rapid solvent-evaporation" strategy for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) cobalt complex hierarchical architectures constructed by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. The 3D structured cobalt complexes have excellent performances in catalyzing OER with lower onset potential, overpotential, Tafel slope and better stability than commercial IrO2. Superior electrochemical performances would be beneficial from the unique 3D structure. This extremely simple method for 3D Co complex with good OER activities makes the complex be promising commercial OER catalyst to replace earth-rare and expensive IrO2.

Aerobic Oxidation Reactivity of Well-Defined Cobalt(II) and Cobalt(III) Aminophenol Complexes.

Project description:This paper describes the synthesis and reactivity studies of three cobalt complexes bearing aminophenol-derived ligands without nitrogen substitution: CoII(tBu2APH)2(tBu2AP)2 (1), CoIII2(tBu2APH)2(tBu2AP)2(μ-tBu2BAP)2 (2), and CoIII(tBu2AP)3 (3), where tBu2APH = 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol, tBu2AP = 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate, and μ-tBu2BAP = bridging 2-amido-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate. Stoichiometric reactivity studies of these well-defined complexes demonstrate the catalytic competency of both cobalt(II) and cobalt(III) complexes in the aerobic oxidative cyclization of tBu2APH with tert-butylisonitrile. Reactions with O2 reveal the aerobic oxidation of the cobalt(II) complex 1 to generate the cobalt(III) species 2 and 3. UV-visible time-course studies and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicate that this oxidation proceeds through a ligand-based radical intermediate. These studies represent the first example of well-defined cobalt aminophenol complexes that participate in catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions and highlight a key role for a ligand radical in the oxidation sequence.

Improvement of the oxidation stability of cobalt nanoparticles.

Project description:In order to enhance the resistance of cobalt nanoparticles to oxidation in air, the impact of different stabilization strategies on the isothermal oxidation of particle dispersions and powders was kinetically investigated and compared to as-prepared particle preparations. A post-synthesis treatment with different alcohols was employed, and we also investigate the influence of two different polymer shells on the oxidation process. We found a parabolic decrease of the magnetization for all particle charges, indicating that the process is dominated by a diffusion of oxygen to the cobalt core and a radial growth of the oxide layer from the particle surface to the core. A significant deceleration of the oxidation process was observed for all alcohol-passivated particle preparations, and this resulted finally in a stagnation effect. The stabilizing effect increases in the sequence Co@OA/MeOH < Co@OA/EtOH < Co@OA/iPrOH. For polymer-coated particle preparations Co@PCL and Co@PS, the deceleration was even more pronounced. The results demonstrate that cobalt nanoparticles can effectively be protected against oxidation in order to improve their mid- to longterm stability.

Controlling the Product Platform of Carbon Dioxide Reduction: Adaptive Catalytic Hydrosilylation of CO2 Using a Molecular Cobalt(II) Triazine Complex.

Project description:The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is considered a major pillar of future sustainable energy systems and chemical industries based on renewable energy and raw materials. Typically, catalysts and catalytic systems are transforming CO2 preferentially or even exclusively to one of the possible reduction levels and are then optimized for this specific product. Here, we report a cobalt-based catalytic system that enables the adaptive and highly selective transformation of carbon dioxide individually to either the formic acid, the formaldehyde, or the methanol level, demonstrating the possibility of molecular control over the desired product platform.

High energy product developed from cobalt nanowires.

Project description:Cobalt nanowires with high aspect ratio have been synthesized via a solvothermal chemical process. Based on the shape anisotropy and orientation of the nanowire assemblies, a record high room-temperature coercivity of 10.6 kOe has been measured in Co nanowires with a diameter of about 15 nm and a mean length of 200 nm. As a result, energy product of the wires reaches 44 MGOe. It is discovered that the morphology uniformity of the nanowires is the key to achieving the high coercivity and high energy density. Nanowires of this type are ideal building blocks for future bonded, consolidated and thin film magnets with high energy density and high thermal stability.
