RNA editing in plastids and mitochondria of flowering plants changes hundreds of selected cytidines to uridines, mostly in coding regions of mRNAs. Specific sequences around the editing sites are presumably recognized by up to 200 pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins.
