Project description:Surface roughness affects the near-wall fluid velocity profile and surface drag, and is commonly quantified by the equivalent sand-grain roughness [Formula: see text]. It is essential to estimate [Formula: see text] for accurate fluid dynamic problem modeling. While numerous roughness correlation formulas have been proposed to predict [Formula: see text] in the fully rough regime, most of them are restricted to certain roughness types, with various geometric parameters considered in each case, leading to ongoing disagreements regarding its parameterization and lack of universality. In this study, a Particle Swarm Optimized Backpropagation (PSO-BP) method is proposed to predict [Formula: see text] based on the selected surface parameters from previous DNS, LES, and experimental results for flow behavior over various surface roughness. The PSO-BP model's ability to predict [Formula: see text] in the fully rough region is evaluated and compared with both the existing roughness correction formulas as well as the traditional BP model. An optimized polynomial function is also proposed to serve as a 'white box' for predicting [Formula: see text]. It turns out that the PSO-BP method has better performance in the evaluation metrics compared to other methods, yielding a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.0390, a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.0026 and a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 28.12%. This novel approach for estimating [Formula: see text] has practical applicability and holds promise for improving the precision and efficiency of calculations related to equivalent sand-grain roughness, and thus provides more accurate and effective solutions for CFD and other engineering applications.

Project description:Modern genetic data combined with appropriate statistical methods have the potential to contribute substantially to our understanding of human history. We have developed an approach that exploits the genomic structure of admixed populations to date and characterize historical mixture events at fine scales. We used this to produce an atlas of worldwide human admixture history, constructed using genetic data alone and encompassing over 100 events occurring over the past 4,000 years. We identify events whose dates and participants suggest they describe genetic impacts of the Mongol Empire, Arab slave trade, Bantu expansion, first millennium CE migrations in eastern Europe, and European colonialism, as well as unrecorded events, revealing admixture to be an almost universal force shaping human populations.

Project description:BackgroundOur current understanding of archaic admixture in humans relies on statistical methods with large biases, whose magnitudes depend on the sizes and separation times of ancestral populations. To avoid these biases, it is necessary to estimate these parameters simultaneously with those describing admixture. Genetic estimates of population histories also confront problems of statistical identifiability: different models or different combinations of parameter values may fit the data equally well. To deal with this problem, we need methods of model selection and model averaging, which are lacking from most existing software.ResultsThe Legofit software package allows simultaneous estimation of parameters describing admixture, and the sizes and separation times of ancestral populations. It includes facilities for data manipulation, estimation, analysis of residuals, model selection, and model averaging.ConclusionsLegofit uses genetic data to study the history of a subdivided population. It is unaffected by recent history and can therefore focus on the deep history of population size, subdivision, and admixture. It outperforms several statistical methods that have been widely used to study population history and should be useful in any species for which DNA sequence data is available from several populations.

Project description:A Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) in the sailing process, excavating seabed sediment with the drag head and pumping it through the pipeline to the spoil hopper sedimentation. The spoil hopper sedimentation process, as a critical factor affecting the loading yield and efficiency of a dredger, is susceptible to the influence of different average sand grain diameter dm . However, the soil type tends to change continuously during the loading process, making it difficult to obtain the dm by measurement or calculation. In this paper, combined with the existing simplified one-dimensional sedimentation model and simulated loading data, the Bootstrap Particle Filter (BPF), Gaussian Particle Swarm Optimized Particle Filter (GPSO-PF), Assisted Particle Filter (APF), Continuous-Discrete Feedback Particle Filter based on the constant feedback gain approximation (CD-FPF-CG) and the Galerkin method feedback gain approximation (CD-FPF-GL) are applied in the numerical simulations for online estimation of important variables such as the average sand grain diameter dm , the sand bed height hs and mass ms , respectively. The simulations results show that the CD-FPF-CG has a higher numerical accuracy and efficiency than the BPF, GPSO-PF, APF and CD-FPF-GL. Therefore, the CD-FPF-CG is used to estimate the above important variables for the actual vessel and the initial value of the average sand grain diameter dm for the CD-FPF-CG is determined via Simulated Annealing Multiple Population Genetic Algorithm (SAMPGA).

Project description:Describing the distribution of genetic variation across individuals is a fundamental goal of population genetics. In humans, traditional approaches for describing population genetic variation often rely on discrete genetic ancestry labels, which, despite their utility, can obscure the complex, multifaceted nature of human genetic history. These labels risk oversimplifying ancestry by ignoring its temporal depth and geographic continuity, and may therefore conflate notions of race, ethnicity, geography, and genetic ancestry. Here, we present a method that capitalizes on the rich genealogical information encoded in genomic tree sequences to infer the geographic locations of the shared ancestors of a sample of sequenced individuals. We use this method to infer the geographic history of genetic ancestry of a set of human genomes sampled from Europe, Asia, and Africa, accurately recovering major population movements on those continents. Our findings demonstrate the importance of defining the spatial-temporal context of genetic ancestry to describing human genetic variation and caution against the oversimplified interpretations of genetic data prevalent in contemporary discussions of race and ancestry.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Present-day climate change has altered the phenology (the timing of periodic life cycle events) of many plant and animal populations worldwide. Some of these changes have been adaptive, leading to an increase in population fitness, whereas others have been associated with fitness decline. Representing short-term responses to an altered weather regime, hitherto observed changes are largely explained by phenotypic plasticity. However, to track climatically induced shifts in optimal phenotype as climate change proceeds, evolutionary capacity in key limiting climate- and fitness-related traits is likely to be crucial. In order to produce realistic predictions about the effects of climate change on species and populations, a main target for conservation biologists is thus to assess the potential of natural populations to respond by these two mechanisms. In this study we use a large 15-year dataset on an ectotherm model, the Swedish sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), to investigate how higher spring temperature is likely to affect oviposition timing in a high latitude population, a trait strongly linked to offspring fitness and survival. RESULTS:With an interest in both the short- and potential long-term effect of rising temperatures, we applied a random regression model, which yields estimates of population-level plasticity and among-individual variation in the average, as well as the plastic, response to temperature. Population plasticity represents capacity for short-term adjustments whereas variation among individuals in a fitness-related trait indicates an opportunity for natural selection and hence for evolutionary adaptation. The analysis revealed both population-level plasticity and individual-level variation in average laying date. In contrast, we found no evidence for variation among females in their plastic responses to spring temperature, which could demonstrate a similarity in responses amongst females, but may also be due to a lack of statistical power to detect such an effect. CONCLUSION:Our findings indicate that climate warming may have positive fitness effects in this lizard population through an advancement of oviposition date. This prediction is consistent over shorter and potentially also longer time scales as the analysis revealed both population-level plasticity and individual-level variation in average laying date. However, the genetic basis for this variation would have to be examined in order to predict an evolutionary response.
