Project description:Throughout the world, wetlands have experienced degradation and declines in areal coverage. Fortunately, recognition of the value of wetlands has generated interest in preserving and restoring them. Post-restoration monitoring is necessary to analyze success or failure, thereby informing subsequent management decisions. Restoration of oxbow wetlands has become the focus of targeted restoration efforts to promote recovery of biodiversity and sensitive species, and to enhance ecosystem services. The fish communities of oxbows have been the subject of many monitoring studies. However, a recommended sampling methodology for monitoring the fish communities of oxbows has not been described, thereby limiting our capacity to effectively monitor these ecosystems. We compared four sampling methodologies (backpack electrofishing, fyke netting, minnow trapping, and seining) for fish community data collection with a primary objective of determining an effective method for sampling fish communities in small oxbow wetlands. Seining and fyke netting were determined to be effective methods for sampling oxbow fish communities. Backpack electrofishing and minnow trapping produced low taxonomic richness values and sampled a smaller proportion of species present than seining and fyke netting. Although seining and fyke netting produced similar taxonomic diversity and abundance values, these two gears differ in their ease of implementation and potential habitat disturbance generated by sampling. Therefore, consideration must be given to how species present (especially sensitive species) within the wetland could be impacted by sampling disturbance when choosing between seining and fyke netting.

Project description:Background: This paper discusses halal awareness of MSE food producers in West Java Province, Indonesia. Halal awareness is the first step toward obtaining halal certificates, which confirm that the product is lawful according to Islamic Sharia. Unfortunately, despite Islam being the religion of most Indonesians, most food sold in the market lacks a halal certificate due to a lack of awareness among food producers about the importance of selling halal-certified foods. Methods: This study aims at measuring the level of halal awareness and the intention of MSE food producers to register halal certification. Halal awareness is assumed to be influenced by knowledge of halal and the food producers' perception of the benefits of halal certificates. Furthermore, halal awareness, attitudes, and perception of the ease of procedures will encourage the intention to register halal certification. An electronic Google Form with a cover letter and a set of questionnaires was distributed to collect data. Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was chosen to evaluate the adopted theoretical models in the exploratory research. Results: The results show that halal awareness is influenced by knowledge of halal and perception of its benefits. Moreover, halal awareness influences positively the intention to obtain a halal certificate, but the intention is not significantly affected by attitudes to produce halal foods and perception of procedures for obtaining halal certification. This shows that halal awareness will increase the intention to register halal certification. However, misconceptions about the procedures for obtaining halal certificates keep them from registering. Conclusions: MSE food producers in West Java Province, Indonesia have a good level of awareness about halal food. However, their products are not halal-certified due to the perception of the procedures for obtaining halal certificates are relatively complicated and costly for them.

Project description:Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Thailand were assessed in this study to determine the short-term and long-term economic effects of post-COVID- 19 -, with the goal of developing policy guidelines that focus on the methods and strategies that will further develop and help recover these sectors. MSMEs are the most vulnerable and require assistants to combat the pandemic. This study assesses the perspectives of stakeholders on the development of mechanisms and the strategies applied to support vulnerable groups in Thailand, which mostly consist of women and children. The main data collection was gathered through online questionnaires that were distributed to various stakeholder groups. The tools used for analysis were advanced quantitative analysis tools that aid in achieving this research study's objectives, and data was examined primarily through the usage of path modeling, structural equation modeling (SEM), and descriptive analysis was among the methods used. The findings reveal that in the short term, MSMEs' ability to respond to COVID-19 implications has a significant impact on both financial and non-financial performance. Non-financial performance, on the other hand, is more affected by adaptability than financial performance. Demand shock from lockdowns and other COVID-19 cautionary interventions has a negative and significant impact on MSMEs' adaptability, financial performance, and non-financial performance. The demand shocks increased the vulnerability of MSMEs significantly but it was found that proper management of demand shock has helped stabilized and improve MSMEs' financial and non-financial performances, as well as helped decrease their vulnerability. When it comes to government policy, the focus is usually on enhancing the flexibility and financial performance of MSMEs. The government's legislative actions have little impact on MSMEs' non-financial performance and vulnerability. This could be because the majority of the programs are more focused on providing financial assistance to businesses or their consumers. COVID-19's supply and demand shock only hindered MSMEs' ability to respond to the changes and challenges caused by the pandemic, according to vendors. The vulnerability of MSMEs caused by COVID-19 creates grave effects on their financial performance. The findings of this research paper will assist policymakers in identifying the most vulnerable aspects of MSMEs, as well as their expectations- and determine the forms of support that will be required to combat the current and future pandemic situations that may occur in Thailand. In addition, it will aid policymakers in the establishment of procedures and supporting strategies for MSMEs to reduce the unemployment rate and stimulate the Thai economy, among other factors of improvement.

Project description:Since 2020, the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis has caused a great deal of social and economic damages to micro and small-scale enterprises (MSEs). This research examined the most common damages of this crisis in active and inactive rural MSEs and also assessed different kind of responses the managers and owners of theses MSEs have received dealing with these damages. The sample population of this study consisted of all managers of 72 active and 38 closed rural MSEs in the Dastjerd village, Hamedan, Iran. These MSEs were mainly garment small factories. This research utilized a mixed approach (quantitative-qualitative) to study the research objectives in depth. First, in qualitative part, semi-constructed interviews and field visits were done. Then, using quantitative, results of the qualitative section, previous studies and the existing literature, a researcher-made questionnaire was created. Based on qualitative part information through interviews, damages of rural MSEs during COVID-19 pandemic were categorized into three classes, including damages related to production, and financial and marketing issues. Also, two categories of managers' responses that could be labeled as passive and adaptive behavior were identified. Findings showed that active rural MSEs have taken more adaptive measures and tried to find appropriate ways to reduce or overcome damages. Active MSEs were mainly owned and managed collaboratively by more literate and experienced managers. Also results revealed that rural MSEs' managers reacted to different kinds of damages based on their ability, knowledge, and experience. Based on research results, managers' knowledge and skills can help them find more adaptive solutions to keep the firms stable and overcome damages. It can be concluded that COVID-19 pandemic has a great impact on rural MSEs and they need more financial support and managerial advice to overcome this kind of crisis situation.

Project description:We performed a preliminary evaluation of a mobile sampling platform with adjustable push net and live box (Platform) against two common methods for sampling small-bodied fish (i.e., 10-100 mm) in two distinct lentic habitats. Nearshore (NS) littoral habitat was sampled by Platform and beach seine, and open water (OW) pelagic habitat by Platform and Kodiak trawl. Our goal was to evaluate the Platform's ability to describe fish assemblage structure across habitat types in contrast to common techniques restricted to single habitat types that are less comparable due to gear-specific bias. Platform sample speed had a significant positive effect on recapture efficiency of both nearly neutrally buoyant objects and marked fish. Marked fish recapture efficiencies were similar for Platform in NS and OW, indicating similar efficiency across habitat types. Platform capture efficiency was similar to beach seine and greater than Kodiak trawl. With similar sampling time, the Platform collected more individuals and taxa in NS relative to beach seine and in OW relative to Kodiak trawl. Greater taxa detection by the Platform suggests that it may be effective at detecting species that are numerically rare in specific habitats when compared to these methods. Fish CPUE was significantly greater NS regardless of technique. However, by using the Platform, there is greater confidence that this difference was reliable and not a gear selectivity artifact. Overall, this preliminary study demonstrates the Platform's potential to collect standardized data across NS and OW habitats, track ontogenetic habitat shifts, and detect differences in small-bodied fish taxa richness, relative abundance, and density between NS and OW habitats. Continued experimentation beyond a single reservoir and fish size range is required before consensus can be established regarding the utility of this new push net design.

Project description:The role of fomites in infectious disease transmission relative to other exposure routes is difficult to discern due, in part, to the lack of information on the level and distribution of virus contamination on surfaces. Comparisons of studies intending to fill this gap are difficult because multiple different sampling methods are employed and authors rarely report their method's lower limit of detection. In the present study, we compare a subset of sampling methods identified from a literature review to demonstrate that sampling method significantly influences study outcomes. We then compare a subset of methods identified from the review to determine the most efficient methods for recovering virus from surfaces in a laboratory trial using MS2 bacteriophage as a model virus. Recoveries of infective MS2 and MS2 RNA are determined using both a plaque assay and quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, respectively. We conclude that the method that most effectively recovers virus from nonporous fomites uses polyester-tipped swabs prewetted in either one-quarter-strength Ringer's solution or saline solution. This method recovers a median fraction for infective MS2 of 0.40 and for MS2 RNA of 0.07. Use of the proposed method for virus recovery in future fomite sampling studies would provide opportunities to compare findings across multiple studies.

Project description:Shifts in healthy human microbial communities have now been linked to disease in numerous body sites. Noninvasive swabbing remains the sampling technique of choice in most locations; however, it is not well known if this method samples the entire community, or only those members that are easily removed from the surface. We sought to compare the communities found via swabbing and biopsied tissue in true vocal folds, a location that is difficult to sample without causing potential damage and impairment to tissue function. A secondary aim of this study was to determine if swab sampling of the false vocal folds could be used as proxy for true vocal folds. True and false vocal fold mucosal samples (swabbed and biopsied) were collected from six pigs and used for 454 pyrosequencing of the V3-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Most of the alpha and beta measures of diversity were found to be significantly similar between swabbed and biopsied tissue samples. Similarly, the communities found in true and false vocal folds did not differ considerably. These results suggest that samples taken via swabs are sufficient to assess the community, and that samples taken from the false vocal folds may be used as proxies for the true vocal folds. Assessment of these techniques opens an avenue to less traumatic means to explore the role microbes play in the development of diseases of the vocal folds, and perhaps the rest of the respiratory tract.

Project description:BackgroundChronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR) more accurately than the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation.HypothesisNew CKD-EPI equations improve risk stratification in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) and provide complementary information to the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score.MethodsWe studied 350 subjects (mean age, 68 ± 12 years; 70% male) with NSTE-ACS. Estimated GFR was calculated using the MDRD and new CKD-EPI equations based on serum creatinine (SCr) and/or cystatin C (CysC) concentrations obtained within 48 hours of hospital admission. The primary endpoint was all-cause death during follow-up.ResultsOver the study period (median, 648 days [interquartile range, 236-1042 days]), 31 patients died (0.05% events per person-year). Decedents had poorer renal-function parameters (P < 0.001). Both CysC-based CKD-EPI equations had the highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the prediction of all-cause mortality. After multivariate adjustment, only CysC-based CKD-EPI equations were independent predictors of all-cause mortality (CKD-EPISCr - CysC , per mL/min/1.73 m(2) : hazard ratio: 0.975, 95% confidence interval: 0.956-0.994, P = 0.009; CKD-EPICysC , per mL/min/1.73 m(2) : hazard ratio: 0.976, 95% confidence interval: 0.959-0.993, P = 0.005). Reclassification analyses showed that only CysC-based CKD-EPI equations improved predictive accuracy of the GRACE risk score.ConclusionsIn patients with NSTE-ACS, CysC-based CKD-EPI equations improved clinical risk stratification for mortality and added complementary prognostic information to the GRACE risk score.

Project description:Reaction rates (fluxes) in a metabolic network can be analyzed using constraint-based modeling which imposes a steady state assumption on the system. In a deterministic formulation of the problem the steady state assumption has to be fulfilled exactly, and the observed fluxes are included in the model without accounting for experimental noise. One can relax the steady state constraint, and also include experimental noise in the model, through a stochastic formulation of the problem. Uniform sampling of fluxes, feasible in both the deterministic and stochastic formulation, can provide us with statistical properties of the metabolic network, such as marginal flux probability distributions. In this study we give an overview of both the deterministic and stochastic formulation of the problem, and of available Monte Carlo sampling methods for sampling the corresponding solution space. We apply the ACHR, OPTGP, CHRR and Gibbs sampling algorithms to ten metabolic networks and evaluate their convergence, consistency and efficiency. The coordinate hit-and-run with rounding (CHRR) is found to perform best among the algorithms suitable for the deterministic formulation. A desirable property of CHRR is its guaranteed distributional convergence. Among the three other algorithms, ACHR has the largest consistency with CHRR for genome scale models. For the stochastic formulation, the Gibbs sampler is the only method appropriate for sampling at genome scale. However, our analysis ranks it as less efficient than the samplers used for the deterministic formulation.

Project description:BackgroundThe negative effect of unfavorable working conditions and long-term work stress on health has been demonstrated in previous research. To address these challenges, systematic approaches such as psychosocial risk assessments (PRA) have been developed in many countries worldwide. Despite legal obligations, psychosocial risk assessments are rarely carried out in micro and small-sized enterprises (MSE). Even though those enterprises constitute a large proportion of the general workforce, this area remains largely untouched by research. In order to enable starting points for a greater dissemination in organizational practice, the present study explores barriers and drivers of psychosocial risk assessments in micro and small-sized enterprises.MethodsA total of 18 owners and managers from 15 micro and small-sized enterprises in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, were interviewed. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. A qualitative approach was applied: Content analysis was used to analyze the data, using deductive as well as inductive coding techniques.ResultsThe following barriers emerged from the interviews: Negative PRA image, stigmatization of mental health, lacking acceptance of employees, fear of excessive authority interference, ignorance of PRA, not understanding the necessity, inappropriate approach, and limited resources. The identified drivers were: Easy access to PRA material, external support from experts, renaming the term "workplace risk assessment", understanding content and benefit of PRA, simplify and revise PRA process, and noticeable consequences of PRA execution and non-execution. The results are comparable with those in larger companies. They emphasize the importance of mental health education, improving the process of psychosocial risk assessments, and the ongoing support in overcoming limited financial as well as human resources.ConclusionsTo improve implementation of PRA in organizational practice, a simplification of the process is proposed, accompanied by information campaigns and an improvement in the health literacy of owners and managers of MSE. In view of the results, the full revision of the PRA approach should also be considered.
