Project description:How do we understand the intentions of other people? There has been a longstanding controversy over whether it is possible to understand others' intentions by simply observing their movements. Here, we show that indeed movement kinematics can form the basis for intention detection. By combining kinematics and psychophysical methods with classification and regression tree (CART) modeling, we found that observers utilized a subset of discriminant kinematic features over the total kinematic pattern in order to detect intention from observation of simple motor acts. Intention discriminability covaried with movement kinematics on a trial-by-trial basis, and was directly related to the expression of discriminative features in the observed movements. These findings demonstrate a definable and measurable relationship between the specific features of observed movements and the ability to discriminate intention, providing quantitative evidence of the significance of movement kinematics for anticipating others' intentional actions.

Project description:Literature mentions two types of models describing cyclic movement-theory and data driven. Theory driven models include anatomical and physiological aspects. They are principally suitable for answering questions about the reasons for movement characteristics, but they are complicated and substantial simplifications do not allow generally valid results. Data driven models allow answering specific questions, but lack the understanding of the general movement characteristic. With this paper we try a compromise without having to rely on anatomy, neurology and muscle function. We hypothesize a general kinematic description of cyclic human motion is possible without having to specify the movement generating processes, and still get the kinematics right. The model proposed consists of a superposition of six contributions-subject's attractor, morphing, short time fluctuation, transient effect, control mechanism and sensor noise, while characterizing numbers and random contributions. We test the model with data from treadmill running and stationary biking. Applying the model in a simulation results in good agreement between measured data and simulation values. We find in all our cases the similarity analysis between measurement and simulation is best for the same subjects-[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. All comparisons between different subjects are [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. This uniquely allows for the identification of each measurement for the associated simulation. However, even different subject comparisons show good agreement between measurement and simulation results of differences ?run = 6.7±4.7% and ?bike = 5.1±4.5%.

Project description:Individuals with autism spectrum conditions have difficulties in understanding and responding appropriately to others. Additionally, they demonstrate impaired perception of biological motion and problems with motor control. Here we investigated whether individuals with autism move with an atypical kinematic profile, which might help to explain perceptual and motor impairments, and in principle may contribute to some of their higher level social problems. We recorded trajectory, velocity, acceleration and jerk while adult participants with autism and a matched control group conducted horizontal sinusoidal arm movements. Additionally, participants with autism took part in a biological motion perception task in which they classified observed movements as 'natural' or 'unnatural'. Results show that individuals with autism moved with atypical kinematics; they did not minimize jerk to the same extent as the matched typical control group, and moved with greater acceleration and velocity. The degree to which kinematics were atypical was correlated with a bias towards perceiving biological motion as 'unnatural' and with the severity of autism symptoms as measured by the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule. We suggest that fundamental differences in movement kinematics in autism might help to explain their problems with motor control. Additionally, developmental experience of their own atypical kinematic profiles may lead to disrupted perception of others' actions.

Project description:The ability to understand intentions based on another's movements is crucial for human interaction. This ability has been ascribed to the so-called motor chaining mechanism: anytime a motor chain is activated (e.g., grasp-to-drink), the observer attributes to the agent the corresponding intention (i.e., to drink) from the first motor act (i.e., the grasp). However, the mechanisms by which a specific chain is selected in the observer remain poorly understood. In the current study, we investigate the possibility that in the absence of discriminative contextual cues, slight kinematic variations in the observed grasp inform mapping to the most probable chain. Chaining of motor acts predicts that, in a sequential grasping task (e.g., grasp-to-drink), electromyographic (EMG) components that are required for the final act [e.g., the mouth-opening mylohyoid (MH) muscle] show anticipatory activation. To test this prediction, we used MH EMG, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS; MH motor-evoked potentials), and predictive models of movement kinematics to measure the level and timing of MH activation during the execution (Experiment 1) and the observation (Experiment 2) of reach-to-grasp actions. We found that MH-related corticobulbar excitability during grasping observation varied as a function of the goal (to drink or to pour) and the kinematics of the observed grasp. These results show that subtle changes in movement kinematics drive the selection of the most probable motor chain, allowing the observer to link an observed act to the agent's intention.

Project description:The classification of neuronal subpopulations has significantly advanced, yet its relevance for behavior remains unclear. The highly organized flocculus of the cerebellum, known to fine-tune multi-axial eye movements, is an ideal substrate for the study of potential functions of neuronal subpopulations. Here, we demonstrate that its recently identified subpopulations of 9+ and 9- Purkinje cells exhibit an intermediate Aldolase C expression and electrophysiological profile, providing evidence for a graded continuum of intrinsic properties among PC subpopulations. By identifying and utilizing two Cre-lines that genetically target these floccular domains, we show with high spatial specificity that these subpopulations of Purkinje cells participate in separate micromodules with topographically organized connections. Finally, optogenetic excitation of the respective subpopulations results in movements around the same axis in space, yet with distinct kinematic profiles. These results indicate that Purkinje cell subpopulations integrate in discrete circuits and mediate particular parameters of single movements.

Project description:Recently, musical sounds from pre-recorded orchestra sample libraries (OSL) have become indispensable in music production for the stage or popular charts. Surprisingly, it is unknown whether human listeners can identify sounds as stemming from real orchestras or OSLs. Thus, an internet-based experiment was conducted to investigate whether a classic orchestral work, produced with sounds from a state-of-the-art OSL, could be reliably discerned from a live orchestra recording of the piece. It could be shown that the entire sample of listeners (N = 602) on average identified the correct sound source at 72.5%. This rate slightly exceeded Alan Turing's well-known upper threshold of 70% for a convincing, simulated performance. However, while sound experts tended to correctly identify the sound source, participants with lower listening expertise, who resembled the majority of music consumers, only achieved 68.6%. As non-expert listeners in the experiment were virtually unable to tell the real-life and OSL sounds apart, it is assumed that OSLs will become more common in music production for economic reasons.

Project description:Mild traumatic brain injury affects millions of individuals annually primarily through falls, traffic collisions, or blunt trauma and can generate symptoms that persist for years. Closed-head rotational loading is the most common cause of mild traumatic brain injury and is defined by a rapid rotational acceleration of brain tissue within an intact skull. Injury kinematics-the mechanical descriptors of injury-inducing motion-explain movement of the head, which govern energy transfer, and, therefore, determine injury severity. However, the relationship between closed-head rotational injury kinematics-such as angular velocity, angular acceleration, and injury duration-and outcome after mild traumatic brain injury is not completely understood. To address this gap in knowledge, we analysed archived surgical records of 24 swine experiencing a diffuse closed-head rotational acceleration mild traumatic brain injury against 12 sham animals. Kinematics were contrasted against acute recovery outcomes, specifically apnea time, extubation time, standing time, and recovery duration. Compared to controls, animals experiencing a mild traumatic brain injury were far more likely to have apnea (P < 0.001), shorter time to extubation (P = 0.023), and longer time from extubation to standing (P = 0.006). Using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-based regressions, kinematic parameters, including maximum negative angular velocity and time from peak angular velocity to maximum angular deceleration, were selected to explain variation in apnea time, standing time, and recovery duration. Simplified linear models employing the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-selected variables explained a modest degree of variation in apnea time (adjusted R 2 = 0.18), standing time (adjusted R 2 = 0.19), and recovery duration (adjusted R 2 = 0.27). Neuropathology was correlated with multiple injury kinematics, with maximum angular acceleration exhibiting the strongest correlation (R 2 = 0.66). Together, these data suggest the interplay between multiple injury kinematics, including maximum negative angular velocity (immediately preceding cessation of head motion) and time from peak angular velocity to maximum angular deceleration, best explain acute recovery metrics and neuropathology after mild traumatic brain injury in swine. Future experiments that independently manipulate individual kinematic parameters could be instrumental in developing translational diagnostics for clinical mild traumatic brain injury.

Project description:The mechanics of the knee are complex and dependent on the shape of the articular surfaces and their relative alignment. Insight into how anatomy relates to kinematics can establish biomechanical norms, support the diagnosis and treatment of various pathologies (e.g., patellar maltracking) and inform implant design. Prior studies have used correlations to identify anatomical measures related to specific motions. The objective of this study was to describe relationships between knee anatomy and tibiofemoral (TF) and patellofemoral (PF) kinematics using a statistical shape and function modeling approach. A principal component (PC) analysis was performed on a 20-specimen dataset consisting of shape of the bone and cartilage for the femur, tibia and patella derived from imaging and six-degree-of-freedom TF and PF kinematics from cadaveric testing during a simulated squat. The PC modes characterized links between anatomy and kinematics; the first mode captured scaling and shape changes in the condylar radii and their influence on TF anterior-posterior translation, internal-external rotation, and the location of the femoral lowest point. Subsequent modes described relations in patella shape and alta/baja alignment impacting PF kinematics. The complex interactions described with the data-driven statistical approach provide insight into knee mechanics that is useful clinically and in implant design.

Project description:ObjectiveMovement provides crucial sensorimotor information to the developing brain, evoking somatotopic cortical EEG activity. Indeed, temporal-spatial organisation of these movements, including a diverse repertoire of accelerations and limb combinations (e.g. unilateral progressing to bilateral), predicts positive sensorimotor outcomes. However, in current clinical practice, movements in human neonates are qualitatively characterised only during brief periods (a few minutes) of wakefulness, meaning that the vast majority of sensorimotor experience remains unsampled. Here our objective was to quantitatively characterise the long-range temporal organisation of the full repertoire of newborn movements, over multi-hour recordings.MethodsWe monitored motor activity across 2-4 h in 11 healthy newborn infants (median 1 day old), who wore limb sensors containing synchronised tri-axial accelerometers and gyroscopes. Movements were identified using acceleration and angular velocity, and their organisation across the recording was characterised using cluster analysis and spectral estimation.ResultsMovement occurrence was periodic, with a 1-hour cycle. Peaks in movement occurrence were associated with higher acceleration, and a higher proportion of movements being bilateral.ConclusionsNeonatal movement occurrence is cyclical, with periods consistent with sleep-wake behavioural architecture. Movement kinematics are organised by these fluctuations in movement occurrence. Recordings that exceed 1-hour are necessary to capture the long-range temporal organisation of the full repertoire of newborn limb movements.SignificanceFuture work should investigate the prognostic value of combining these movement recordings with synchronised EEG, in at-risk infants.

Project description:Background: Based on the refined theory of basic individual values and transformational leadership theory, this study focuses on the associations between coaches' value priorities and their transformational leadership behaviors, exploring the potential mediation versus moderation effect of two alternative variables in this relationship: perceived club pressure or an autonomy supportive environment. Methods: Participants were 266 basketball coaches (85.7% men) from 17 to 66 years old (M = 32.82, SD = 9.2) from 119 different Spanish clubs. On average, they had worked for their current sport clubs for 5.02 years, and they had a mean of 11.10 years of experience. The coaches were all Spanish speakers, and they trained players at different levels of competition. Results: The stronger the importance of the coaches' self-transcendent values (i.e., universalism and benevolence), the more they displayed transformational behaviors (i.e., individual consideration, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and fostering acceptance of group goals) toward the basketball players and perceived a more autonomy supportive environment and lower pressure from the club. Coaches who held conservation values (i.e., humility and face) displayed inspirational motivation behaviors. When coaches held openness to change values (i.e., stimulation and self-direction thought), they tended to display inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation. Finally, coaches who held beliefs in self-enhancement values (i.e., power) displayed lower transformational behaviors (intellectual stimulation and fostering acceptance of group goals) toward their basketball players, and they perceived higher pressure from the club and a less autonomy supportive environment. Moreover, the club's autonomy supportive environment played a mediator role between self-transcendence values and some transformational behaviors; however, moderator effects were not significant, with the exception of coaches with self-enhancement values, who tended to avoid intellectual stimulation to a larger extent when they perceived high levels of pressure at the club. Conclusion: These results highlight the importance of identifying the value base on which to develop transformational leadership programs in order to enhance positive experiences in the sport domain.
