Conserved uncharacterized genes account for ~30% of genes in both eukaryotic and bacterial genomes and are predicted to encode what are often termed "conserved hypothetical proteins." Many of these proteins have a wide phylogenetic distribution and might play important roles in conserved cellular pathways.
