ABSTRACT: In the structure of the title mol-ecular salt, 2C(6)H(14)N(+)·C(10)H(6)O(6)S(2) (2-), the asymmetric unit consists of one 2-methyl-piperidinium cation and one-half of a naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate anion; the anion lies across a centre of symmetry. In the crystal, the cations and anions are linked through N-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a two-dimensional network.

In the dication, the dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 74.67 (6)°. The cations and anions inter-act through N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The NH(3) (+) functional groups are also involved in N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds with the water mol-ecules, forming an infinite three-dimensional framework in the crystal structure.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, 2C(8)H(9)N(2) (+)·C(10)H(6)O(6)S(2) (2-), contains a 2-methyl-benzimidazolium cation and one half of a naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate anion. The formula unit is generated by an inversion center. In the crystal, N-H?O hydrogen bonds link the components into chains along [001]. In addition, weak C-H?O hydrogen bonds and weak C-H?? inter-actions are observed. The methyl H atoms were refined as disordered over two sets of sites with equal occupancy.

The anion sits across a centre of symmetry. The atoms of the benzimidazole ring are nearly coplanar (r.m.s. deviation of the fitted atoms = 0.0085?Å) and the triflouromethyl group lies out of this plane. In the crystal, the cations are linked to adjacent anions by N-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a ladder structure parallel to the a axis in which the anions form the rungs. Adjacent ladders are linked by weak C-H?O inter-actions, forming sheets parallel to the ac plane.
