Revealing the truth about 'trapped rainbow' storage of light in metamaterials.

ABSTRACT: It was claimed that the incident light can be gradually slowed down and finally trapped in a tapered metamaterial waveguide. Here we show that the energy incident from the input port of the tapered metamaterial waveguide will be totally reflected (instead of being trapped) due to the strong intermodal coupling between the forward and backward modes. The underlying physical mechanism for this strong intermodal-coupling is given. The occurrence of energy reflection is unambiguously proved using several independent methods, (1) the semi-analytical mode matching technique, (2) the numerical finite element simulation, (3) the requirement of energy and momentum conservation, and (4) an experimental verification at microwave frequency. The dream of 'trapped rainbow' for storage of light might still be possible if this intermodal coupling could be blocked, and our study provides a useful guidance for such an endeavor.

Truly trapped rainbow by utilizing nonreciprocal waveguides.

Project description:The concept of a "trapped rainbow" has generated considerable interest for optical data storage and processing. It aims to trap different frequency components of the wave packet at different positions permanently. However, all the previously proposed structures cannot truly achieve this effect, due to the difficulties in suppressing the reflection caused by strong intermodal coupling and distinguishing different frequency components simultaneously. In this article, we found a physical mechanism to achieve a truly "trapped rainbow" storage of electromagnetic wave. We utilize nonreciprocal waveguides under a tapered magnetic field to achieve this and such a trapping effect is stable even under fabrication disorders. We also observe hot spots and relatively long duration time of the trapped wave around critical positions through frequency domain and time domain simulations. The physical mechanism we found has a variety of potential applications ranging from wave harvesting and storage to nonlinearity enhancement.

Numerical simulation data for the dynamic properties of rainbow metamaterials.

Project description:Simulation data are presented for identifying and analysing the dynamic properties of the rainbow metamaterials as presented in the articles "Rainbow metamaterials for broadband multi-frequency vibration attenuation: numerical analysis and experimental validation" (Meng et al., 2019 [1]) and "Optimal design of rainbow elastic metamaterials" (Meng et al., 2019 [2]). In this data article, the frequency response functions and mode shapes of the rainbow metamaterials are numerically calculated by Finite Element models set up in Ansys Mechanical APDL. Harmonic analysis was performed to figure out the receptance function values of the rainbow metamaterials within the frequency regime 0-500 Hz. Modal analysis was applied to estimate the mode shapes, which could be used to explain the critical peaks and dips in the receptance function curve. Source files of Finite Element models are provided in the data. The Finite Element simulation is not only an effective alternative way to estimate the dynamic properties of the rainbow metamaterials, the mode shape analysis, which is unlikely to be achieved with the analytical model, provides direct insights into the underlying vibration mechanism of the rainbow metamaterials.

Manipulating complex light with metamaterials.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of metamaterials have revealed unparalleled opportunities for "engineering" space for light propagation; opening a new paradigm in spin- and quantum-related phenomena in optical physics. Here we show that unique optical properties of metamaterials (MMs) open unlimited prospects to "engineer" light itself. We propose and demonstrate for the first time a novel way of complex light manipulation in few-mode optical fibers using optical MMs. Most importantly, these studies highlight how unique properties of MMs, namely the ability to manipulate both electric and magnetic field components of electromagnetic (EM) waves, open new degrees of freedom in engineering complex polarization states of light at will, while preserving its orbital angular momentum (OAM) state. These results lay the first steps in manipulating complex light in optical fibers, likely providing new opportunities for high capacity communication systems, quantum information, and on-chip signal processing.

Full-color enhanced second harmonic generation using rainbow trapping in ultrathin hyperbolic metamaterials.

Project description:Metasurfaces have provided a promising approach to enhance the nonlinearity at subwavelength scale, but usually suffer from a narrow bandwidth as imposed by sharp resonant features. Here, we counterintuitively report a broadband, enhanced second-harmonic generation, in nanopatterned hyperbolic metamaterials. The nanopatterning allows the direct access of the mode with large momentum, rendering the rainbow light trapping, i.e. slow light in a broad frequency, and thus enhancing the local field intensity for boosted nonlinear light-matter interactions. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, we fabricated a nanostructured Au/ZnO multilayer, and enhanced second harmonic generation can be observed within the visible wavelength range (400-650 nm). The enhancement factor is over 50 within the wavelength range of 470-650 nm, and a maximum conversion efficiency of 1.13×10-6 is obtained with a pump power of only 8.80 mW. Our results herein offer an effective and robust approach towards the broadband metasurface-based nonlinear devices for various important technologies.

Highly energy-tunable quantum light from moire-trapped excitons.

Project description:Photon antibunching, a hallmark of quantum light, has been observed in the correlations of light from isolated atomic and atomic-like solid-state systems. Two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures offer a unique method to create a quantum light source: Moiré trapping potentials for excitons are predicted to create arrays of quantum emitters. While signatures of moiré-trapped excitons have been observed, their quantum nature has yet to be confirmed. Here, we report photon antibunching from single moiré-trapped interlayer excitons in a heterobilayer. Via magneto-optical spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the discrete anharmonic spectra arise from bound band-edge electron-hole pairs trapped in moiré potentials. Last, we exploit the large permanent dipole of interlayer excitons to achieve large direct current (DC) Stark tuning up to 40 meV. Our results confirm the quantum nature of moiré-confined excitons and open opportunities to investigate their inhomogeneity and interactions between the emitters or energetically tune single emitters into resonance with cavity modes.

Tunable rainbow light trapping in ultrathin resonator arrays.

Project description:Rainbow light trapping in plasmonic devices allows for field enhancement of multiple wavelengths within a single device. However, many of these devices lack precise control over spatial and spectral enhancement profiles and cannot provide extremely high localised field strengths. Here we present a versatile, analytical design paradigm for rainbow trapping in nanogroove arrays by utilising both the groove-width and groove-length as tuning parameters. We couple this design technique with fabrication through multilayer thin-film deposition and focused ion beam milling, which enables the realisation of unprecedented feature sizes down to 5 nm and corresponding extreme normalised local field enhancements up to 103. We demonstrate rainbow trapping within the devices through hyperspectral microscopy and show agreement between the experimental results and simulation. The combination of expeditious design and precise fabrication underpins the implementation of these nanogroove arrays for manifold applications in sensing and nanoscale optics.

Digital Light Processing 3D-Printed Ceramic Metamaterials for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption.

Project description:Combining 3D printing with precursor-derived ceramic for fabricating electromagnetic (EM) wave-absorbing metamaterials has attracted great attention. This study presents a novel ultraviolet-curable polysiloxane precursor for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing to fabricate ceramic parts with complex geometry, no cracks and linear shrinkage. Guiding with the principles of impedance matching, attenuation, and effective-medium theory, we design a cross-helix-array metamaterial model based on the complex permittivity constant of precursor-derived ceramics. The corresponding ceramic metamaterials can be successfully prepared by DLP printing and subsequent pyrolysis process, achieving a low reflection coefficient and a wide effective absorption bandwidth in the X-band even under high temperature. This is a general method that can be extended to other bands, which can be realized by merely adjusting the unit structure of metamaterials. This strategy provides a novel and effective avenue to achieve "target-design-fabricating" ceramic metamaterials, and it exposes the downstream applications of highly efficient and broad EM wave-absorbing materials and structures with great potential applications.

Circularly polarized light detection with hot electrons in chiral plasmonic metamaterials.

Project description:Circularly polarized light is utilized in various optical techniques and devices. However, using conventional optical systems to generate, analyse and detect circularly polarized light involves multiple optical elements, making it challenging to realize miniature and integrated devices. While a number of ultracompact optical elements for manipulating circularly polarized light have recently been demonstrated, the development of an efficient and highly selective circularly polarized light photodetector remains challenging. Here we report on an ultracompact circularly polarized light detector that combines large engineered chirality, realized using chiral plasmonic metamaterials, with hot electron injection. We demonstrate the detector's ability to distinguish between left and right hand circularly polarized light without the use of additional optical elements. Implementation of this photodetector could lead to enhanced security in fibre and free-space communication, as well as emission, imaging and sensing applications for circularly polarized light using a highly integrated photonic platform.

Transfer of orbital angular momentum of light to plasmonic excitations in metamaterials.

Project description:The emergence of the vortex beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) has provided intriguing possibilities to induce optical transitions beyond the framework of the electric dipole interaction. The uniqueness stems from the OAM transfer from light to material, as demonstrated in electronic transitions in atomic systems. In this study, we report on the OAM transfer to electrons in solid-state systems, which has been elusive to date. Using metamaterials (periodically textured metallic disks), we show that multipolar modes of the surface electromagnetic excitations (so-called spoof localized surface plasmons) are selectively induced by the terahertz vortex beam. Our results reveal selection rules governed by the conservation of the total angular momentum, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. The efficient transfer of light's OAM to elementary excitations in solid-state systems at room temperature opens up new possibilities of OAM manipulation.
