ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(24)H(27)N(2)Si(+)·Br(-)·H(2)O, was synthesized from 1-(dimethyl-phenyl-silylmeth-yl)-1H-benzimidazole and (2-bromo-eth-yl)benzene in dimethyl-formamide. The benzimidazole ring system is nearly planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.015?(5)?Å, and forms dihedral angles of 73.0?(3) and 39.6?(2)°, with the phenyl rings. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H?Br, C-H?Br and C-H?O hydrogen bonds. In addition, the structure features ?-? stacking inter-actions, with a face-to-face separation of 3.644?(3)?Å between parallel benzimidazole ring systems.

Project description:In the title hydrated symetrically substituted 1,3-bis-(4-methyl-benz-yl)benzimidazolium salt, C23H23N2 (+)·Br(-)·H2O, the dihedral angles between the benzimidazole ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.003 Å) and the pendant benzene rings are 73.18 (16) and 77.52 (16)°. Both benzene rings lie to the same side of the benzimidazole ring system, giving the cation an overall U-shape. In the crystal, the cation is linked to the water mol-ecule by a short C-H⋯O hydrogen bond and the water mol-ecule forms O-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds. Together, these inter-actions lead to [010] chains. The packing is consolidated by C-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds and aromatic π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances = 3.5401 (17) and 3.8815 (18) Å], generating a three-dimensional network.

Project description:In the cation of the title compound, C(14)H(13)N(2)S(+)·Br(-), the essentially planar benzimidazole system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0082 Å) is substituted with a 4-methyl-sulfanylphenyl ring. The dihedral angle between the benzimidazole system and the 4-methyl-sulfanylphenyl ring is 2.133 (2)°. The crystal structure is characterized by strong and highly directional inter-molecular N-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds involving the bromide ion. Moreover, C-H⋯S inter-actions result in chains of mol-ecules along the c axis. The supra-molecular assembly is further stabilized by π-π stacking inter-actions between the benzimidazole system and 4-methyl-sulfanylphenyl rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.477 (4) Å].

The carbonyl group is almost coplanar with the neighbouring phenyl ring [O-C-C-C = 178.9?(2)°]. The sulfanium group shows a trigonal-pyramidal geometry at the S atom. The crystal structure is stabil-ized by C-H?Br hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. Weak ?-? inter-actions link adjacent phenyl rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.946?(2)?Å].
