ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(10)H(9)NO(3), the dihedral angle between the phenyl ring and the amide group is 10.8?(2)°. The C=O and O-H bonds of the carboxyl group adopt an anti orientation and an intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bond closes an S(7) ring. In the crystal, N-H?O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into C(7) chains propagating in [101]. The packing is consolidated by C-H?O inter-actions, generating sheets aligned at an angle of ca 60° with the bc plane.

Project description:The title compounds, (N-methyl-N-phenyl-amino)(N-methyl-N-phenyl-car-bam-oyl)sulfide, C15H16N2OS, (I), and (N-methyl-N-phenyl-amino)-(N-methyl-N-phenyl-carbamo-yl)disulfane, C15H16N2OS2, (II), are stable derivatives of (chloro-carbon-yl)sulfenyl chloride and (chloro-carbon-yl)disulfanyl chloride, respectively. The torsion angle about the S-S bond in (II) is -92.62 (6)°, which is close to the theoretical value of 90°. In the crystal of (II), non-classical inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds form centrosymmetric cyclic dimers [graph set R 2 (2)(10)], while inter-dimer C-H⋯S inter-actions generate chains extending along the b axis.

Highly Efficient Biobased Synthesis of Acrylic Acid.

Project description:Petrochemical based polymers, paints and coatings are cornerstones of modern industry but our future sustainable society demands greener processes and renewable feedstock materials. A challenge is to access platform monomers from biomass resources while integrating the principles of green chemistry in their chemical synthesis. We present a synthesis route starting from biomass-derived furfural towards the commonly used monomers maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, implementing environmentally benign photooxygenation, aerobic oxidation and ethenolysis reactions. Maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, transformed into sodium acrylate, were isolated in yields of 85 % (2 steps) and 81 % (4 steps), respectively. With minimal waste and high atom efficiency, this biobased route provides a viable alternative to access key monomers.

RNA profiling of Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 exposed to acrylic acid

Project description:Cyanobacteria are valuable organisms for studying the physiology of photosynthesis and carbon fixation as well as metabolic engineering for the production of fuels and chemicals. This work describes a novel counter selection method for the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 based on organic acid toxicity. The organic acids acrylate, 3-hydroxypropionate, and propionate were shown to be inhibitory towards PCC 7002 and other cyanobacteria at low concentrations. Inhibition was overcome by a loss of function mutation in the gene acsA. Loss of AcsA function was used as a basis for an acrylate counter selection method. DNA fragments of interest were inserted into the acsA locus and strains harboring the insertion were isolated on selective medium containing acrylate. This methodology was also used to introduce DNA fragments into a pseudogene, glpK. Application of this method will allow for more advanced genetics and engineering studies in PCC 7002 including the construction of markerless gene deletions and insertions. The acrylate counter-selection could be applied to other cyanobacterial species where AcsA activity confers acrylate sensitivity (e.g. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803).

Lactic Acid Conversion to Acrylic Acid Over Fluoride-Substituted Hydroxyapatites.

Project description:One of the most interesting intermediates for the chemical industry is acrylic acid, which can be derived from lactic acid by catalytic dehydration in the gas phase. The realization of this reaction is complex due to a strong thermal activation leading to the formation of undesired by-products (acetaldehyde, propanoic acid…) as well as polymerization. We studied this reaction over hydroxyapatites modified by substitution of the hydroxyl groups by fluoride. This notably enabled increasing the selectivity to acrylic acid while reducing the formation of the undesired acetaldehyde. Introduction of fluoride induced a modification of the phosphate ( PO43- ) groups. In the presence of water, fluoride prevented the formation of hydrogenophosphate species ( HPO42- ), which are well-known acid sites responsible for the formation of acetaldehyde by decarboxylation/decarbonylation. Further, we evidenced an important impact of fluoride substitution on crystallinity, specific surface area and on the surface Ca/P ratio. This latter is known to be a key parameter to control the acidity and the basicity of the hydroxyapatites. Using FT-IR spectroscopy with propyne as a probe molecule, we could show that lactic acid was concertedly adsorbed on basic and acid sites, which might be at the origin of the observed superior performances.

Project description:In the title solvated crystal, C8H5Br2NO3·C3H8O, the acid mol-ecules form inversion dimers by pairwise N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between carbamoyl groups and the carboxyl and carbamoyl groups link to form head-to-tail inversion dimers. The 2-propanol hydroxyl group inter-poses between adjacent head-tail pairs, resulting in C 3 3(10) chains of hydrogen bonds propagating along [100]. The mol-ecules of 2-propanol are disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.598 (8):0.402 (8) ratio. The best-fit planes of the carbamoyl group and benzene ring are inclined by 88.26 (11)°. This is a greater inclination than was previously reported with CH3, Cl, F or H in place of the Br atoms, although those analogues did not have a para carboxyl group.

Enhanced Heat Resistance and Adhesive Strength of Styrene-Acrylic Triblock Copolymer Elastomers by Incorporating Acrylic Acid.

Project description:Herein, we present an industrially applicable strategy to enhance the heat resistance and adhesive properties of ABA triblock copolymer-based elastomers composed of styrene (St) and n-butyl acrylate (nBA) by incorporating acrylic acid (AA) at different segments. Three types of triblock copolymers, namely, poly(St-r-AA)-b-poly(nBA)-b-poly(St-r-AA), poly(St)-b-poly(nBA-r-AA)-b-poly(St), and poly(St)-b-poly(nBA)-b-poly(St), were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Large-scale RAFT polymerization afforded industrially applicable AA-containing triblock copolymers with moderate molecular weights and predetermined comonomer compositions (St/nBA/AA = 15/83/2-24/73/3, number-average molecular weight (M n) = 30,000-110,000, and resulting product > 200 g). The heat resistance and pressure-sensitive adhesive properties of the triblock copolymers were evaluated. Among them, poly(St-r-AA)-b-poly(nBA)-b-poly(St-r-AA), having poly(nBA) as the middle soft segment and poly(St-r-AA) as hard segments at both ends, exhibited excellent heat creep resistance and increased adhesiveness to stainless steel. The feasibility to manipulate the heat resistance and adhesive properties by incorporating AA units into hard and soft segments, in addition to the ease of operation, high block efficiency, and metal-free nature owing to the RAFT process, is highly beneficial for practical applications of these copolymers.
