Two new species of forget-me-nots ( Myosotis, Boraginaceae) from New Zealand.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of forget-me-nots, Myosotis chaffeyorum C.A.Lehnebach sp. nov. and Myosotis mooreana C.A.Lehnebach sp. nov. are described and illustrated. These species are endemic to New Zealand and restricted to the mountains of north-west Nelson (South Island). Both species are uncommon and Myosotis mooreana is known from the type locality only. Their conservation status is rated as "Nationally Critical". A table listing differences between these two new species and other similar species and an identification key are provided.

Microsatellite markers for the New Zealand endemic Myosotis pygmaea species group (Boraginaceae) amplify across species.

Project description:Microsatellite loci were developed as polymorphic markers for the New Zealand endemic Myosotis pygmaea species group (Boraginaceae) for use in species delimitation and population and conservation genetic studies. Illumina MiSeq sequencing was performed on genomic DNA from seedlings of M. drucei. From trimmed paired-end sequences >400 bp, 484 microsatellite loci were identified. Twelve of 48 microsatellite loci tested were found to be polymorphic and consistently scorable when screened on 53 individuals from four populations representing the geographic range of M. drucei. They also amplify in all other species in the M. pygmaea species group, i.e., M. antarctica, M. brevis, M. glauca, and M. pygmaea, as well as 18 other Myosotis species. These 12 polymorphic microsatellite markers establish an important resource for research and conservation of the M. pygmaea species group and potentially other Southern Hemisphere Myosotis.

Two new species of harvestmen (Opiliones, Eupnoi, Neopilionidae) from Waitomo, New Zealand.

Project description:TWO NEW SPECIES OF HARVESTMAN (OPILIONES: Neopilionidae: Enantiobuninae) are described from the Waitomo region of the North Island, New Zealand, Forsteropsalis bona sp. n. and F. photophaga sp. n. Both have been collected within caves in the region, where predation on glow-worms Arachnocampa luminosa has been previously recorded for one or both species (misidentified as 'Megalopsalis tumida'). However, both are regarded as troglophiles rather than strict troglobites due to the presence of specimens outside the cave systems, and the absence of troglobitic adaptations. Megalopsalis tumida (Forster, 1944) is identified as a junior synonym of Forsteropsalis fabulosa (Phillipps & Grimmett, 1932).

Onosma anatolica, a new species of Boraginaceae from Turkey.

Project description:Onosma anatolica Binzet, is described and illustrated as a new species from Ni?de province in southern Anatolia, Turkey. It belongs to sect. Onosma L. subsect. Asterotricha (Boiss.) Gürke. The new species is closely related to Onosma subulifolia Riedl from which it is distinguished. Onosma anatolica is readily distinguished from Onosma subulifolia by its sterile shoots, the green-grey stem indumentum, longer bracts, yellow and puberulous petals. The IUCN threat category of Onosma anatolica is determined as "CR (Critically Endangered)". A distribution map and anidentification key for Onosma anatolica and Onosma subulifolia supplement the study.

Onosma fuyunensis (Boraginaceae), a new species from Xinjiang, China.

Project description:Onosma fuyunensis, a new species of Boraginaceae from northern Xinjiang, China, is described and illustrated here. Onosma fuyunensis is similar to O. simplicissima and O. gmelinii; it differs in having a particularly bristly indumentum, unbranched stems, white and yellow corollas, anthers united only at base, and nutlets with a stipitate cicatrix. An updated key to the species of Onosma from Xinjiang and Altai Mountains is also provided.

Project description:Two new species of oribatid mites of the genus Macrogena (Oribatida, Ceratozetidae) are described from alpine soils of the South Island of New Zealand. Macrogenabrevisensilla sp. n. and Macrogenaabbreviata sp. n. differ from all species of this genus by the tridactylous legs and by the comparatively short interlamellar setae, respectively. New generic diagnosis and an identification key to the known species of Macrogena are provided.

Project description:Mangatangi parvum gen. n. and sp. and Forsteropsalis pureroa sp. n. are described from the North Island of New Zealand. Pantopsalis listeri (White 1849) and Pantopsalis cheliferoides (Colenso 1882) are redescribed and no longer regarded as nomina dubia; Pantopsalis luna (Forster 1944) is identified as a junior synonym of Pantopsalis listeri. A key to Pantopsalis species is provided.

Heliotropium (Boraginaceae) in the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia) with description of a new species.

Project description:During the preparation of the Vascular Flora of the Marquesas Islands a new endemic species of Heliotropium L. (Boraginaceae) has come to light and is described herein: Heliotropiumperlmanii Lorence & W. L. Wagner. It is known only from the island of Eiao and appears most closely related to Heliotropiummarchionicum Decne., also endemic to the Marquesas and known from Nuku Hiva. An amended description of Heliotropiummarchionicum and key to separate the Marquesan species are given and their differences discussed.

Molecular and morphological evidence for recognition of two species within Harpagonella (Amsinckiinae, Boraginaceae).

Project description:Recent taxonomic treatments of the genus Harpagonella have included only one lower taxon, Harpagonella palmeri A. Gray. However, a larger-fruited variety of Harpagonella palmeri from Arizona and Sonora was described by I.M. Johnston in 1924. He continued to recognize this taxon - Harpagonella palmeri var. arizonica - in his treatment of the genus in Kearney and Peebles's Arizona Flora in 1960. Here, we provide two lines of molecular evidence and quantitative morphological evidence from calyx characters showing that plants of Harpagonella from Arizona, Sonora, and central Baja California, corresponding to Johnston's var. arizonica, are distinct from Harpagonella palmeri of southern California and Baja California. We make the new combination Harpagonella arizonica (I.M. Johnston) Guilliams & B.G. Baldwin, comb. nov. for the plants from Arizona, Sonora, and central Baja California.
