Novel bacterial community associated with 500-year-old unpreserved archaeological wood from King Henry VIII's Tudor Warship the Mary Rose.

ABSTRACT: A 500-year-old unpreserved Mary Rose sample, historically containing an iron bolt, was analyzed using enrichment cultures and 16S sequencing. The novel community of bacteria present demonstrates a biological pathway of Fe and S oxidation and a range of acid-generating metabolisms, with implications for preservation and biogeochemical cycling.
