Tamoxifen (TAM) has both cytostatic and cytotoxic properties for breast cancer. TAM engaged mitochondrial estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) as an antagonist in MCF7-BK cells, increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentrations from the mitochondria that were required for cytotoxicity.
