Imidazolinium and amidinium salts as Lewis acid organocatalysts.

ABSTRACT: The application of imidazolinium and amidinium salts as soft Lewis acid organocatalysts is described. These salts were suitable catalysts for the activation of unsaturated thioesters in a Diels-Alder reaction and in the ring opening of thiiranes and epoxides. The products were isolated in good yields. The mild catalysts did not cause desulfurization of the products containing a thiol or thiocarbonyl group.

Project description:A series of new dihydrobenzooxophosphole-based Lewis Base organocatalysts were designed and synthesized. They are demonstrated effective in trichlorosilane-mediated stereoselective conjugate reductions of C=C bonds. DFT calculations reveal that the strong hydrogen bond between the amide linker and the chloride on silicon in the transition state contributes to the high reactivity of the catalyst 3a.

Chiral Imidazolium Prolinate Salts as Efficient Synzymatic Organocatalysts for the Asymmetric Aldol Reaction.

Project description:Chiral imidazolium l-prolinate salts, providing a complex network of supramolecular interaction in a chiral environment, have been studied as synzymatic catalytic systems. They are demonstrated to be green and efficient chiral organocatalysts for direct asymmetric aldol reactions at room temperature. The corresponding aldol products were obtained with moderate to good enantioselectivities. The influence of the presence of chirality in both the imidazolium cation and the prolinate anion on the transfer of chirality from the organocatalyst to the aldol product has been studied. Moreover, interesting match/mismatch situations have been observed regarding configuration of chirality of the two components through the analysis of results for organocatalysts derived from both enantiomers of prolinate (R/S) and the trans/cis isomers for the chiral fragment of the cation. This is associated with differences in the corresponding reaction rates but also to the different tendencies for the formation of aggregates, as evidenced by nonlinear effects studies (NLE). Excellent activities, selectivities, and enantioselectivities could be achieved by an appropriate selection of the structural elements at the cation and anion.

Lewis Base Activation of Lewis Acid: A Detailed Bond Analysis.

Project description:The effect of a Lewis base (LB) on the nucleophilic attack on chalcogeniranium (chalcogen = sulfur and selenium) cations, the so-called LB activation of a Lewis acid, has been studied coupling natural orbital for chemical valence decomposition of the orbital interaction energy with charge displacement analysis. This methodology provides a detailed and accurate description of all the interactions (LB···chalcogen, chalcogen···olefin and olefin···ammonia) present in the system and leads to a deeper understanding of how they influence each other at all stages of the reaction: reactant complex, transition state, and product complex. In particular, the bond between the chalcogen and the olefin has been decomposed in terms of σ donation/π back-donation and the bond components quantified. This allowed determination of a linear relationship between the activation barrier of the nucleophilic attack and the net amount of charge donated by the olefin to the chalcogen.

A Lewis acid-promoted Pinner reaction.

Project description:Carbonitriles and alcohols react in a Lewis acid-promoted Pinner reaction to carboxylic esters. Best results are obtained with two equivalents of trimethylsilyl triflate as Lewis acid. Good yields are achieved with primary alcohols and aliphatic or benzylic carbonitriles, but the straightforward synthesis of acrylates and benzoates starting with acrylonitrile and benzonitrile, respectively, is similarly possible. Phenols are not acylated under these reaction conditions. The method has been used for the first total synthesis of the natural product monaspilosin. In the reaction of benzyl alcohols variable amounts of amides are formed in a Ritter-type side reaction.

Lewis Acid Promoted Dearomatization of Naphthols.

Project description:Two-step dearomative functionalization of naphthols promoted by Lewis acids and copper(I) catalysis was developed. Initially, Lewis acid complexation inverted the electronic properties of the ring and established an equilibrium with the dearomatized counterpart. Subsequent trapping of the dearomatized intermediate with organometallics as well as organophosphines was demonstrated and provided the corresponding dearomatized products.

Inter- and Intramolecular Cooperativity Effects in Alkanolamine-Based Acid-Base Heterogeneous Organocatalysts.

Project description:Intramolecular cooperativity in heterogeneous organocatalysts is investigated using alkanolamine-functionalized silica acid-base catalysts for the aldol condensation reaction of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde and acetone. Two series of catalysts, one with and one without silanol-capping, are synthesized with varied alkyl linker lengths (two to five) connecting secondary amine and terminal hydroxyl functionalities. The reactivity of these catalysts is assessed to determine the relative potential for intermolecular (silane amine-surface silanol) vs intramolecular (amine-hydroxyl within a single silane) cooperativity, the impact of inhibitory surface-silane interactions, and the role of alkyl linker length and flexibility. For the array of catalysts tested, those with longer linker lengths generally give increased catalytic activity, although the turnover frequency trends differ between catalysts with and without surface silanol capping. Catalysts with alkyl-substituted amines lacking a terminal hydroxyl demonstrate an adverse effect of chain length, where the larger alkyl substituent on the amine provides steric hindrance depressing catalytic activity, while giving additional evidence for improved rates afforded by intramolecular cooperativity in the alkanolamine materials. The silanol-capped alkanolamine catalyst with the longest alkyl linker is found to be the most active alkanolamine catalyst due to its hydrophobized surface, which removes hypothesized silanol-alkanolamine inhibitory interactions, with the sufficient length and flexibility of its amine-hydroxyl linker allowing for favorable conformations for cooperativity. This study demonstrates the feasibility of and important factors affecting intramolecular cooperative activity in acid-base heterogeneous organocatalysis.

Quantum Chemistry-Machine Learning Approach for Predicting Properties of Lewis Acid-Lewis Base Adducts.

Project description:Synthetic design allowing predictive control of charge transfer and other optoelectronic properties of Lewis acid adducts remains elusive. This challenge must be addressed through complementary methods combining experimental with computational insights from first principles. Ab initio calculations for optoelectronic properties can be computationally expensive and less straightforward than those sufficient for simple ground-state properties, especially for adducts of large conjugated molecules and Lewis acids. In this contribution, we show that machine learning (ML) can accurately predict density functional theory (DFT)-calculated charge transfer and even properties associated with excited states of adducts from readily obtained molecular descriptors. Seven ML models, built from a dataset of over 1000 adducts, show exceptional performance in predicting charge transfer and other optoelectronic properties with a Pearson correlation coefficient of up to 0.99. More importantly, the influence of each molecular descriptor on predicted properties can be quantitatively evaluated from ML models. This contributes to the optimization of a priori design of Lewis adducts for future applications, especially in organic electronics.

A Highly Lewis Acidic Strontium ansa-Arene Complex for Lewis Acid Catalysis and Isobutylene Polymerization.

Project description:The potential of a dicationic strontium ansa-arene complex for Lewis acid catalysis has been explored. The key to its synthesis was a simple salt metathesis from SrI2 and 2 Ag[Al(ORF )4 ], giving the base-free strontium-perfluoroalkoxyaluminate Sr[Al(ORF )4 ]2 (ORF =OC(CF3 )3 ). Addition of an ansa-arene yielded the highly Lewis acidic, dicationic strontium ansa-arene complex. In preliminary experiments, the complex was successfully applied as a catalyst in CO2 -reduction to CH4 and a surprisingly controlled isobutylene polymerization reaction.

Hydrogen activation using a novel tribenzyltin Lewis acid.

Project description:Over the last decade there has been an explosion in the reactivity and applications of frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry. Despite this, the Lewis acids (LAs) in these transformations are often boranes, with heavier p-block elements receiving surprisingly little attention. The novel LA Bn3SnOTf (1) has been synthesized from simple, inexpensive starting materials and has been spectroscopically and structurally characterized. Subtle modulation of the electronics at the tin centre has led to an increase in its Lewis acidity in comparison with previously reported R3SnOTf LAs, and has facilitated low temperature hydrogen activation and imine hydrogenation. Deactivation pathways of the R3Sn+ LA core have also been investigated.This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.
