ABSTRACT: The mol-ecular structure of the title compound, C(12)H(8)I(2)N(2) [systematic name: (E)-bis-(2-iodo-phen-yl)diazene], exhibits an essentially planar trans geometry [maximum deviation = 0.022?(4)?Å] with the iodine atoms ortho to the azo bridge. In the crystal, offset ?-stacking leads to the formation of columns along the a axis [closest C?C distance = 3.383?(4)?Å].

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(19)H(18)I(4)N(2)O(2), comprises a potentially tetra-dentate Schiff base ligand. The disordered H atoms on the N and O atoms were refined with site occupancies of 0.54?(8)/0.46?(8) and 0.59?(7)/0.41?(7), respectively. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 73.3?(3)°. Intra-molecular O-H?N and N-H?O hydrogen bonds make S(6) ring motifs. Short I?I [3.8919?(7)?Å] and I?Cg [Cg is a ring centroid; 3.911?(2)?Å] contacts are present in the crystal structure. The crystal structure is further stabilized by inter-molecular ?-? inter-actions [centroid-to-centroid distance = 3.827?(3)?Å].

Project description:In the title compound, {[Zn(2)(C(16)H(4)I(2)O(8))(H(2)O)(4)]·2H(2)O}(n), two crystallographically independent Zn(II) atoms are each located on a twofold rotation axis. Both Zn(II) atoms are in distorted octa-hedral coordination geometries: one is coordinated by six O atoms from four carboxyl-ate groups, while the other is coordinated by two carboxyl-ate groups and four water mol-ecules. The tetra-carboxyl-ate ligand mol-ecules connect the Zn(II) atoms, completing a three-dimensional metal-organic framework. O-H?O hydrogen bonds link the metal-organic framework with the uncoord-inated water mol-ecules.

Project description:The mol-ecule of the title compound, C(14)H(8)I(2), an inter-mediate in the synthesis of organic materials, is nearly planar, the maximum deviation from the mean plane being 0.032?(1)?Å for the C atoms and 0.082?(2)?Å for the I atoms. In the crystal structure, a sandwich-herringbone arrangement of mol-ecules is observed, whereas a columnar ?-stacking arrangement has been reported for the chlorinated congener 1,8-dichloro-anthracene. Similar effects of halogen substituents on the modulation of packing arrangements are reported for halogenated aromatic compounds such as tetra-cenes and chrycenes.

Project description:The whole mol-ecule of the title compound, C14H8I2, is generated by crystallographic twofold symmetry. The mol-ecule is planar [maximum deviation = 0.0323 (6) Å] with the I atoms displaced from the mean plane of the phenanthrene ring system by only 0.0254 (5) Å. In the crystal, mol-ecules form face-to-face slipped anti-parallel π-π stacking inter-actions along the c axis with an inter-planar distance of 3.499 (7) Å.

In the crystal, mol-ecules are stacked alternately in opposite orientations, forming a one-dimensional column along the b axis. The inter-action between adjacent columns is accomplished through S⋯S [3.4289 (5) Å], S⋯I [3.4498 (4) Å] and O⋯I [2.812 (2) Å] contacts.

Project description:In the title compound, C(12)H(7)I(2)N, the tricyclic aromatic ring system is essentially planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.0272?Å. The two I atoms are marginally out of plane, with the C-I bonds angled at 3.9?(2) and 1.1?(2)° with respect to the planes of their respective benzene rings, above and below the plane of the carbazole ring system. No classical hydrogen bonds are observed in the crystal structure.

Synthesis, structure and magnetocaloric properties of a new two-dimensional gadolinium(III) coordination polymer based on azobenzene-2,2',3,3'-tetracarboxylic acid.

Project description:A new Gd3+ coordination polymer (CP), namely, poly[diaqua[μ4-1'-carboxy-3,3'-(diazene-1,2-diyl)dibenzene-1,2,2'-tricarboxylato]gadolinium(III)], [Gd(C16H7N2O8)(H2O)2]n, (I), has been synthesized hydrothermally from Gd(NO3)3·6H2O and azobenzene-2,2',3,3'-tetracarboxylic acid (H4abtc). The target solid has been characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements. CP (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The structure features a 4-connected topology in which Gd3+ ions are connected by carboxylate groups into a linear chain along the monoclinic symmetry direction. Adjacent one-dimensional aggregates are bridged by Habtc3- ligands to form a two-dimensional CP in the (10-1) plane. A very short hydrogen bond [O...O = 2.4393 (4) Å] links neighbouring layers into a three-dimensional network. A magnetic study revealed antiferromagnetic Gd...Gd coupling within the chain direction. CP (I) displays a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with a maximum -ΔSm of 27.26 J kg-1 K-1 for ΔH = 7 T at 3.0 K. As the MCE in (I) exceeds that of the commercial magnetic refrigerant GGG (Gd3Ga5O12, -ΔSm = 24 J kg-1 K-1, ΔH = 30 kG), CP (I) can be regarded as a potential cryogenic material for low-temperature magnetic refrigeration.
