The P450 enzymes maintain a conserved P450 fold despite a considerable variation in sequence. The P450 family even includes proteins that lack the single conserved cysteine and are therefore no longer haem-thiolate proteins. The mechanisms of successive gene duplications leading to large families in plants and animals are well established.
