A new species of Schrankia Hubner, 1825 from China (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Hypenodinae).

ABSTRACT: A new species of the genus Schrankia Hübner, 1825, S. pelicanosp. n. is described from Sichuan, China. A diagnostic comparison is made with Schrankia taenialis (Hübner, [1809]) and Schrankia separatalis (Herz, 1904); illustrations of the male holotype and its genitalia are provided. A checklist of the genus with synonyms is given.

Project description:The Antispila species feeding on Vitaceae from Shandong Peninsula, China are treated. Antispila kunyuensis Liu, sp. n., feeding on Ampelopsis humulifolia, is described as new to science, and A. uenoi Kuroko, 1987, feeding on Vitis amurensis, is recorded as new for China. Vitis amurensis is documented as a new host plant for A. uenoi. The adult male and female, host plant and typical patterns of leaf-mines of both species are illustrated, as are male and female genitalia and venation. The venation and the paired tufts of scales on the 7th abdominal segment in male are illustrated for A. uenoi for the first time. DNA barcodes of both species are also provided, together with a neighbor-joining tree for facilitating species delimitation.

New synonymies and combinations in Argyrostrotis Hubner (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Erebinae, Poaphilini).

Project description:After examining the type specimens of species in the eastern North American genus Argyrostrotis the number of known species in the genus is reduced from 10 to six through synonymy. A key to species is included along with illustrations of the adults and genitalia of each species. Three Neotropical species currently included in Argyrostrotis (Argyrostrotis eurysaces Schaus, 1914; Argyrostrotis quadrata Dognin, 1910; and Celiptera surrufula Dyar, 1913) are transferred to other genera as Argyrosticta eurysaces (Schaus, 1914), comb. n. [Noctuidae: Bagisarinae], Heterochroma quadrata (Dognin, 1910), comb. n. [Noctuidae: Amphipyrinae], and Ptichodis surrufula (Dyar, 1913), comb. n. [Erebidae: Erebinae: Euclidiini].

First report of the leaf-mining genus Antispila Hubner, [1825] from mainland China, with the description of a new species feeding on Cornus (Lepidoptera, Heliozelidae).

Project description:The genus Antispila Hübner, [1825] is newly recorded from mainland China. Antispila sinensissp. n., the first formally named Heliozelidae species in mainland China, is described. The host plant of the new species, Cornus walteri Wangerin (Cornaceae), is widespread through east Asia and is used as a shade tree in city parks in Jinan City, where the moth causes damage to foliage. Morphological and molecular analyses distinguish A. sinensissp. n. from its close relatives. The adult, pupa, larva, host plant, leaf-mines, and the shield of the new species are illustrated, as are male and female genitalia, venation, and larval chaetotaxy. DNA barcodes of the new species are also provided.

Project description:In this paper, four species of the genus Diduga Moore, [1887] from China (Chongqing and Guangdong) and Malaysia (Borneo, Sabah) are described as new to science, namely D. simianshana sp. nov., D. chebalinga sp. nov., D. chewi sp. nov., and D. hollowayi sp. nov. Adults of these species are illustrated in color, and images of the male and female genitalia are provided. A distribution map of the new species is provided, together with an updated checklist of all species of Diduga.

The geographical distribution patterns of Chrysoteuchia Hubner in China and description of a new species (Lepidoptera, Crambidae).

Project description:The geographical distribution patterns of Chrysoteuchia Hübner in China are analysed with MaxEnt and ArcGIS based on known localities and nineteen environmental variables. The results suggest that southeastern China is a highly suitable area, and Bio11 (mean temperature of the coldest quarter), Bio12 (annual precipitation) and Bio18 (precipitation of the warmest quarter) are revealed to be the main variables affecting the present distribution patterns. Among them, Bio18 is the strongest predictor with a 24.3% contribution. Furthermore, a new species from Tibet is added to the genus, Chrysoteuchialandryi sp. nov., and the male of C.curvicavus is described for the first time. Images of adults and their genitalia are illustrated, and two maps showing the geographical distribution patterns of Chrysoteuchia in China are provided.

Adult male and female moths are illustrated, including genitalia. Callistege clara Homziak & Metzler, sp. nov. is one of 27 new species of insects discovered during an inventory survey of arthropods of White Sands National Monument, USA, and Cuatrociénegas Protected Area (Mexico), funded by the U.S. National Park Service. The Cuatrociénegas Basin is known for high endemism of aquatic and wetland biota within the Chihuahuan Desert. Callistege clara Homziak & Metzler, sp. nov. was found in a wetland environment.
