Visualization and quantification of transition metal atomic mixing in Mo1-xWxS2 single layers.

ABSTRACT: The alloying behaviour of materials is a well-known problem in all kinds of compounds. Revealing the heteroatomic distributions in two-dimensional crystals is particularly critical for their practical use as nano-devices. Here we obtain statistics of the homo- and heteroatomic coordinates in single-layered Mo(1-x)W(x)S(2) from the atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscope images and successfully quantify the degree of alloying for the transition metal elements (Mo or W). The results reveal the random alloying of this mixed dichalcogenide system throughout the chemical compositions (x=0 to 1). Such a direct route to gain an insight into the alloying degree on individual atom basis will find broad applications in characterizing low-dimensional heterocompounds and become an important complement to the existing theoretical methods.

Exfoliation of large-area transition metal chalcogenide single layers.

Project description:Isolating large-areas of atomically thin transition metal chalcogenide crystals is an important but challenging task. The mechanical exfoliation technique can provide single layers of the highest structural quality, enabling to study their pristine properties and ultimate device performance. However, a major drawback of the technique is the low yield and small (typically < 10 μm) lateral size of the produced single layers. Here, we report a novel mechanical exfoliation technique, based on chemically enhanced adhesion, yielding MoS2 single layers with typical lateral sizes of several hundreds of microns. The idea is to exploit the chemical affinity of the sulfur atoms that can bind more strongly to a gold surface than the neighboring layers of the bulk MoS2 crystal. Moreover, we found that our exfoliation process is not specific to MoS2, but can be generally applied for various layered chalcogenides including selenites and tellurides, providing an easy access to large-area 2D crystals for the whole class of layered transition metal chalcogenides.

Transition metal dichalcogenide magnetic atomic chains.

Project description:Reducing the dimensions of a material to the atomic scale endows them with novel properties that are significantly different from their bulk counterparts. A family of stoichiometric transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MX2 (M = Ti to Mn, and X = S to Te) atomic chains is proposed. The results reveal that the MX2 atomic chains, the smallest possible nanostructure of a TMD, are lattice-dynamically stable, as confirmed from their phonon spectra and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. In contrast to their bulk and two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, the TiX2 atomic chains are nonmagnetic semiconductors, while the VX2, CrX2, and MnX2 chains are unipolar magnetic, bipolar magnetic, and antiferromagnetic semiconductors, respectively. In addition, the VX2, CrX2, and MnX2 chains can be converted via carrier doping from magnetic semiconductors to half metals with reversible spin-polarization orientation at the Fermi level. Of these chains, the MnX2 chains exhibit either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic half metallicity depending on the injected carrier type and concentration. The diverse and tunable electronic and magnetic properties in the MX2 chains originate, based on crystal field theory, from the occupation of the metal d orbitals and the exchange interaction between the tetrahedrally coordinated metal atoms in the atomic chain. The calculated interaction between the carbon nanotubes and the MX2 chains implies that armchair (7,7) or armchair (8,8) carbon nanotubes are appropriate sheaths for growing MX2 atomic single-chains in a confined channel. This study reveals the diverse magnetic properties of MX2 atomic single-chains and provides a promising building block for nanoscale electronic and spintronic devices.

Transition metal dichalcogenide metamaterials with atomic precision.

Project description:The ability to extract materials just a few atoms thick has led to the discoveries of graphene, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and other important two-dimensional materials. The next step in promoting the understanding and utility of flatland physics is to study the one-dimensional edges of these two-dimensional materials as well as to control the edge-plane ratio. Edges typically exhibit properties that are unique and distinctly different from those of planes and bulk. Thus, controlling the edges would allow the design of materials with combined edge-plane-bulk characteristics and tailored properties, that is, TMD metamaterials. However, the enabling technology to explore such metamaterials with high precision has not yet been developed. Here we report a facile and controllable anisotropic wet etching method that allows scalable fabrication of TMD metamaterials with atomic precision. We show that TMDs can be etched along certain crystallographic axes, such that the obtained edges are nearly atomically sharp and exclusively zigzag-terminated. This results in hexagonal nanostructures of predefined order and complexity, including few-nanometer-thin nanoribbons and nanojunctions. Thus, this method enables future studies of a broad range of TMD metamaterials through atomically precise control of the structure.

Orbital reconstruction in nonpolar tetravalent transition-metal oxide layers.

Project description:A promising route to tailoring the electronic properties of quantum materials and devices rests on the idea of orbital engineering in multilayered oxide heterostructures. Here we show that the interplay of interlayer charge imbalance and ligand distortions provides a knob for tuning the sequence of electronic levels even in intrinsically stacked oxides. We resolve in this regard the d-level structure of layered Sr2IrO4 by electron spin resonance. While canonical ligand-field theory predicts g||-factors less than 2 for positive tetragonal distortions as present in Sr2IrO4, the experiment indicates g|| is greater than 2. This implies that the iridium d levels are inverted with respect to their normal ordering. State-of-the-art electronic-structure calculations confirm the level switching in Sr2IrO4, whereas we find them in Ba2IrO4 to be instead normally ordered. Given the nonpolar character of the metal-oxygen layers, our findings highlight the tetravalent transition-metal 214 oxides as ideal platforms to explore d-orbital reconstruction in the context of oxide electronics.

Mixing ReaxFF parameters for transition metal oxides using force-matching method.

Project description:We present the development of the method for the refitting the ReaxFF parameters for a system consisting of the mixed transition metal oxides. We have tested several methods allowing to calculate the differences between the vectors of the forces acting on atoms obtained from the reference DFT simulation and the parameters-dependent ReaxFF. We conclude that the footrule method yields the best parameters among the investigated options. We then validate the parameters using the system consisting of the hematite supported (TiO2)n clusters. The results indicate the refitted parameters allow to obtain acceptable geometries of the clusters upon MD simulation on the ReaxFF level, and despite the short timescale lead to the stable structures.

Tuning the Magnetic Moment of Small Late 3d-Transition-Metal Oxide Clusters by Selectively Mixing the Transition-Metal Constituents.

Project description:Transition-metal oxide nanoparticles are relevant for many applications in different areas where their superparamagnetic behavior and low blocking temperature are required. However, they have low magnetic moments, which does not favor their being turned into active actuators. Here, we report a systematical study, within the framework of the density functional theory, of the possibility of promoting a high-spin state in small late-transition-metal oxide nanoparticles through alloying. We investigated all possible nanoalloys An-xBxOm (A, B = Fe, Co, Ni; n = 2, 3, 4; 0≤x≤n) with different oxidation rates, m, up to saturation. We found that the higher the concentration of Fe, the higher the absolute stability of the oxidized nanoalloy, while the higher the Ni content, the less prone to oxidation. We demonstrate that combining the stronger tendency of Co and Ni toward parallel couplings with the larger spin polarization of Fe is particularly beneficial for certain nanoalloys in order to achieve a high total magnetic moment, and its robustness against oxidation. In particular, at high oxidation rates we found that certain FeCo oxidized nanoalloys outperform both their pure counterparts, and that alloying even promotes the reentrance of magnetism in certain cases at a critical oxygen rate, close to saturation, at which the pure oxidized counterparts exhibit quenched magnetic moments.

Charting the Atomic C Interaction with Transition Metal Surfaces.

Project description:Carbon interaction with transition metal (TM) surfaces is a relevant topic in heterogeneous catalysis, either for its poisoning capability, for the recently attributed promoter role when incorporated in the subsurface, or for the formation of early TM carbides, which are increasingly used in catalysis. Herein, we present a high-throughput systematic study, adjoining thermodynamic plus kinetic evidence obtained by extensive density functional calculations on surface models (324 diffusion barriers located on 81 TM surfaces in total), which provides a navigation map of these interactions in a holistic fashion. Correlation between previously proposed electronic descriptors and ad/absorption energies has been tested, with the d-band center being found the most suitable one, although machine learning protocols also underscore the importance of the surface energy and the site coordination number. Descriptors have also been tested for diffusion barriers, with ad/absorption energies and the difference in energy between minima being the most appropriate ones. Furthermore, multivariable, polynomial, and random forest regressions show that both thermodynamic and kinetic data are better described when using a combination of different descriptors. Therefore, looking for a single perfect descriptor may not be the best quest, while combining different ones may be a better path to follow.

Visualization and Quantification of Geometric Diversity in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:With ever-growing numbers of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials being reported, new computational approaches are required for a quantitative understanding of structure-property correlations in MOFs. Here, we show how structural coarse-graining and embedding ("unsupervised learning") schemes can together give new insights into the geometric diversity of MOF structures. Based on a curated data set of 1262 reported experimental structures, we automatically generate coarse-grained and rescaled representations which we couple to a kernel-based similarity metric and to widely used embedding schemes. This approach allows us to visualize the breadth of geometric diversity within individual topologies and to quantify the distributions of local and global similarities across the structural space of MOFs. The methodology is implemented in an openly available Python package and is expected to be useful in future high-throughput studies.

Visualization of arrangements of carbon atoms in graphene layers by Raman mapping and atomic-resolution TEM.

Project description:In-plane and out-of-plane arrangements of carbon atoms in graphene layers play critical roles in the fundamental physics and practical applications of these novel two-dimensional materials. Here, we report initial results on the edge/crystal orientations and stacking orders of bi- and tri-layer graphene (BLG and TLG) from Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments performed on the same sample. We introduce a new method of transferring graphene flakes onto a normal TEM grid. Using this novel method, we probed the BLG and TLG flakes that had been previously investigated by Raman scattering with high-resolution (atomic) TEM.

Strain-induced metal-semiconductor transition observed in atomic carbon chains.

Project description:Carbyne, the sp(1)-hybridized phase of carbon, is still a missing link in the family of carbon allotropes. While the bulk phases of carbyne remain elusive, the elementary constituents, that is, linear chains of carbon atoms, have already been observed using the electron microscope. Isolated atomic chains are highly interesting one-dimensional conductors that have stimulated considerable theoretical work. Experimental information, however, is still very limited. Here we show electrical measurements and first-principles transport calculations on monoatomic carbon chains. When the 1D system is under strain, the chains are semiconducting corresponding to the polyyne structure with alternating bond lengths. Conversely, when the chain is unstrained, the ohmic behaviour of metallic cumulene with uniform bond lengths is observed. This confirms the recent prediction of a metal-insulator transition that is induced by strain. The key role of the contacting leads explains the rectifying behaviour measured in monoatomic carbon chains in a nonsymmetric contact configuration.
