Many Gram-negative bacteria contain specific systems for uptake of foreign DNA, which play a critical role in the acquisition of antibiotic resistance. The TtPilF (PilF ATPase from Thermus thermophilus) is required for high transformation efficiency, but its mechanism of action is unknown.
