A salen-type trinuclear Zn2Gd complex.

ABSTRACT: In the trinuclear title complex, di-?-acetato-1:2?(2)O:O';2:3?(2)O:O'-bis-{?-6,6'-dimeth-oxy-2,2'-[cyclo-hexane-1,2-diylbis(methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato}-1:2?(6)O(1),N,N',O(1'):O(6),O(6');2:3?(6)O(6),O(6'):O(1),N,N',O(1')-2-gadolinium(III)-1,3-dizinc hexa-fluor-idophosphate methanol monosolvate monohydrate, [GdZn2(C22H24N2O4)2(CH3COO)2]PF6·CH3OH·H2O, the two Zn(II) ions are located in the inner N2O2 cavities of two 6,6'-dimeth-oxy-2,2'-[cyclo-hexane-1,2-diylbis(methanylyl-idene)]diphenolate (L) ligands. Both Zn(II) ions are five-coordinated by two O atoms and two N atoms from the L ligand and one O atom of an acetic acid mol-ecule, giving rise to a square-pyramidal geometry around the Zn(II) ions. The Gd(III) ion is nine-coordinated by four O atoms from the outer O2O2 sites of one ligand, and three O atoms from another ligand, in which there is one non-coordinating meth-oxy O atom. Two further O atom from different acetate ligands complete the nine-coordinate environment.

Project description:In the penta-nuclear title complex, [SmZn2(C22H18N2O4)2(NCS)2(C3H7NO)2][Zn2(C22H18N2O4)(NCS)3]·C3H7NO·0.32H2O, namely bis-{μ2-6,6'-dimeth-oxy-2,2'-[phenyl-ene-1,2-diylbis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato}-1κ4 O,N,N',O':2κ3 O,O',O 6;2κ3 O,O',O 6:3κ4 O,N,N',O'-bis-(di-methyl-formamide-2κO)di-thiocyanato-1κN,3κN-2-samarium(III)-1,3-dizinc(II) {μ2-6,6'-dimeth-oxy-2,2'-[phenyl-ene-1,2-diylbis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-1κ4 O,N,N',O':2κ2 O,O'}trithio-cyan-ato-1κN;2κ2 N,N-dizinc(II) di-methyl-formamide monosolvate 1.32-hydrate, a dinuclear unit and a trinuclear unit co-exist. One of the ZnII centers in the dinuclear unit as well as the two ZnII centers in the trinuclear unit are located in the inner N2O2 cavity of the ligand and are coordinated to the nitro-gen atom of one thio-cyanate moiety, giving rise to a square-pyramidal geometry. The second ZnII center in the dinuclear unit is coordinated to the two phenolate oxygen atoms of the ligand and to two thio-cyanate groups via the nitro-gen atom in a tetra-hedral geometry. The SmIII ion is eight-coordinated by four phenolate O atoms from the two ligand mol-ecules, two meth-oxy O atoms from the two ligand mol-ecules and two O atoms from the DFM solvent mol-ecule. In the dinuclear unit, the two meth-oxy oxygen atoms remain uncoordinated while in the trinuclear unit, for each ligand one meth-oxy oxygen is coordinated and the other one remains uncoordinated. In the crystal, the trinuclear cationic units and dinuclear anionic units are assembled into infinite layers. These layers are held together via electrostatic inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional structure. In the dinuclear unit, the C and S atoms of one of the thio-cyanate groups are disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.680 (4)(4):0.320 (4) ratio.

Trinuclear Magnesium Imidazolate Borohydride Complex.

Project description:A new type of hybrid compound, combining properties of MOFs and borohydrides, was synthesized solvothermally using Mg(BH4)2 and imidazole as precursors. Material in the form of acetonitrile solvate with formula [Mg3{(Im)BH2(Im)}6(ImH)6]·CH3CN crystallizes in the space group R3̅, having the unit cell parameters a = 15.1942(2) Å and c = 28.3157(3) Å as determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure was further investigated by solid-state NMR and DFT quantum chemical calculations. The main feature of the structure, reported here for the first time, is a linear trinuclear complex, where octahedrally nitrogen-coordinated Mg2+ ions are bridged with {(Im)BH2(Im)}- units, forming inside voids of 4.6 Å in diameter between the magnesium ions. Polar intermolecular interactions hold the molecules in a dense rhombohedral stacking, where a disordered acetonitrile molecule plays a cohesive role. The compound is stable in air and upon heating to about 160 °C. Using an alternative synthesis method from an imidazole melt, an imidazole solvate with the formula [Mg3{(Im)BH2(Im)}6(ImH)6]·ImH and a very similar crystal structure to acetonitrile solvate was prepared. It is stable up to 220 °C. Upon further heating, it transformed into a layered structure with the formula Mg(Im3BH)2, space group P3̅1c, and unit cell parameters a = 8.7338(9) Å and c = 17.621(2) Å determined by synchrotron powder diffraction. Besides its structural novelty, two types of potentially reactive hydrogens, bonded to boron and nitrogen in the same molecule, make the material highly interesting for future investigations in the fields of energy storage applications.

Experimental and Theoretical Survey of Intramolecular Spodium Bonds/σ/π-Holes and Noncovalent Interactions in Trinuclear Zn(II)-Salen Type Complex with OCN<sup>-</sup> Ions: A Holistic View in Crystal Engineering.

Project description:In this work, one new centrosymmetric trinuclear Zn(II) complex 1, [{(OCN)Zn(L)}2Zn], using a salen-type ligand (H2L) in the presence of OCN- was synthesized and characterized via elemental, spectral, SEM-EDX, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) study. In 1, SCXRD reveals two different stereochemical environments of zinc metal ions; one terminal Zn(II) center adopts square pyramidal geometries with the Addison parameter (τ) 0.095, and the central Zn(II) is tetracoordinated tetrahedral geometry. This article provides evidence of the significance and presence of spodium bonds (SpBs) in solid-state crystal structures involving a pseudotetrahedral environment of the central Zn-atom. X-ray structures reveal intramolecular Zn···O SpBs caused by the methoxy (-OCH3) substituent O-atom adjacent to the coordinated phenoxy O-atom. These noncovalent interactions have been thoroughly studied using density functional theory calculations at the RI-BP86[2]-D3[3]/def2-TZVP level of theory that characterizes the nature of SpBs, including the Baders quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules "QTAIM", molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface, and noncovalent index plot (NCI). In addition, a unique complex-isomer-based theoretical model has been vividly employed to estimate the SpBs energy in the complex. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis also tries to establish the differentiation between σ-hole and π-hole SpBs' natures more authentically. The complex energy frameworks were used to investigate noncovalent interactions. To better understand the different intermolecular interactions, we conducted a Hirshfeld surface, which revealed N···H (15.4%) and O···H (9.1%) contacts and Zn···O (5.1%) (SpBs).

Site-isolated redox reactivity in a trinuclear iron complex.

Project description:The symmetric, high-spin triiron complex ((Ph)L)Fe(3)(THF)(3) reacts with mild chemical oxidants (e.g., Ph(3)C-X, I(2)) to afford an asymmetric core, where one iron bears the halide ligand ((Ph)L)Fe(3)X(L) and the hexadentate ((Ph)L = MeC(CH(2)NPh-o-NPh)(3)) ligand has undergone significant rearrangement. In the absence of a suitable trapping ligand, the chlorine and bromine complexes form (μ-X)(2)-bridged structures of the type [((Ph)L)Fe(3)(μ-X)](2). In the trinuclear complexes, the halide-bearing iron site sits in approximate trigonal-bipyramidal (tbp) geometry, formed by two ((Ph)L) anilides and an exogenous solvent molecule. The two distal iron atoms reside in distorted square-planar sites featuring a short Fe-Fe separation at 2.301 Å, whereas the distance to the tbp site is substantially elongated (2.6-2.7 Å). Zero-field, (57)Fe Mössbauer analysis reveals the diiron unit as the locus of oxidation, while the tbp site bearing the halide ligand remains divalent. Magnetic data acquired for the series reveal that the oxidized diiron unit comprises a strongly coupled S = (3)/(2) unit that is weakly ferromagnetically coupled to the high-spin (S = 2) ferrous site, giving an overall S = (7)/(2) ground state for the trinuclear units.

A trinuclear Fe-Fe-Ni complex formed by ligand reshuffling.

Project description:The title complex, dicarbonyl-3?(2)C-(?(3)-3,6-dimethyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ato-1:2:3?(7)S:S,N,N',S':S,S')(?(2)-3,6-di-methyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ato-1:2?(5)S,N,N',S':S)-1,2-diiron(II)-3-nickel(0) [Fe(2)Ni(C(8)H(18)N(2)S(2))(2)(CO)(2)], is the second example showing M(?-SR)(2)Ni(0)(CO)(2) coordination (M = any metal atom). Both Fe(II) ions are five-coordinated in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometries by two N atoms and three S atoms. The Ni atom is four-coordinated in a distorted tetra-hedral geometry by two S atoms and two carbonyl ligands. One of the 3,6-dimethyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ate ligands is disordered, the major component having a refined occupancy of 0.873?(2). The Fe?Fe distance is 3.0945?(3)Å and the Ni?Fe distance is 2.8505?(3)?Å.

A trinuclear nickel(II) enediolate complex: synthesis, characterization, and O2 reactivity.

Project description:Using a new N(4)-donor chelate ligand having a mixture of hydrophobic phenyl and hydrogen-bond-donor appendages, a trinuclear nickel(II) complex of the doubly deprotonated form of 2-hydroxy-1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione was isolated, characterized (X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, UV-vis, (1)H NMR, FTIR, and magnetic moment measurement), and evaluated for O(2) reactivity. This complex, [(6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPANi)(2)(mu-PhC(O)C(O)C(O)Ph)(2)Ni](ClO(4))(2) (4), has two terminal pseudooctahedral Ni(II) centers supported by the tetradentate chelate ligand and a central square-planar Ni(II) ion ligated by oxygen atoms of two bridging enediolate ligands. In CH(3)CN, 4 exhibits a deep orange/brown color and lambda(max) = 463 nm (epsilon = 16 000 M(-1)cm(-1)). The room temperature magnetic moment of 4, determined by Evans method, is mu(eff) = 5.3(2) mu(B). This is consistent with the presence of two noninteracting high-spin Ni(II) centers, a diamagnetic central Ni(II) ion, and an overall quintet ground state. Exposure of a CH(3)CN solution of 4 to O(2) results in the rapid loss of the orange/brown color to give a green solution. The products identified from this reaction are [(kappa(3)-6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(O(2)Ph)(H(2)O)]ClO(4) (5), benzil [PhC(O)C(O)Ph], and CO. Identification of 5 was achieved via its independent synthesis and a comparison of its (1)H NMR and mass spectral features with those of the 6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPA-containing product generated upon reaction of 4 with O(2). The independently prepared sample of 5 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, UV-vis, mass spectrometry, and FTIR. The O(2) reactivity of 4 has relevance to the active-site chemistry of Ni(II)-containing acireductone dioxygenase (Ni(II)ARD).

Walking of antitumor bifunctional trinuclear PtII complex on double-helical DNA.

Project description:The trinuclear BBR3464 ([{trans-PtCl(NH(3))(2)}(2)µ-(trans-Pt(NH(3))(2)(H(2)N(CH(2))(6)NH(2))(2))](4+)) belongs to the polynuclear class of platinum-based anticancer agents. DNA adducts of this complex differ significantly in structure and type from those of clinically used mononuclear platinum complexes, especially, long-range (Pt, Pt) intrastrand and interstrand cross-links are formed in both 5'-5' and 3'-3' orientations. We show employing short oligonucleotide duplexes containing single, site-specific cross-links of BBR3464 and gel electrophoresis that in contrast to major DNA adducts of clinically used platinum complexes, under physiological conditions the coordination bonds between platinum and N7 of G residues involved in the cross-links of BBR3464 can be cleaved. This cleavage may lead to the linkage isomerization reactions between this metallodrug and double-helical DNA. Differential scanning calorimetry of duplexes containing single, site-specific cross-links of BBR3464 reveals that one of the driving forces that leads to the lability of DNA cross-links of this metallodrug is a difference between the thermodynamic destabilization induced by the cross-link and by the adduct into which it could isomerize. The rearrangements may proceed in the way that cross-links originally formed in one strand of DNA can spontaneously translocate from one DNA strand to its complementary counterpart, which may evoke walking of the platinum complex on DNA molecule.

Enantiomeric Recognition of ?-Aminoacids by a Uranyl Salen-Bis-Porphyrin Complex.

Project description:A novel uranyl salen-bis-porphyrin complex, in which two porphyrin subunits and salen moiety were directly linked, was synthesized for the recognition of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) amino acids. This uranyl salen complex, due to the presence of porphyrins with their fluorescence properties, represents the first example of a luminescence of uranyl salen complexes. UV/Vis measurements indicate the formation of 1:1 host-guest complexes, whereas UV-vis and fluorescence studies revealed that this complex acts as a receptor for the enantiomeric recognition of ?-aminoacids derivatives, with high association constants and an excellent enantiomeric discrimination between the two enantiomers of phenylalanine-TBA.

Enantiodivergent epoxidation of alkenes with a photoswitchable phosphate manganese-salen complex

Project description:The development of enantiodivergent catalysts capable of preparing both enantiomeric products from one substrate in a controlled fashion is challenging. Introducing a switching function into the catalyst can address this challenge, allowing the chiral reaction environment to reversibly change during catalysis. Here we report a photoswitchable phosphate ligand, derived from 2,2’-biphenol, which axially coordinates as the counter ion to an achiral manganese(III) salen catalyst, providing the latter with the ability to switch stereoselectivity in the epoxidation of alkenes. The enantiomers of the chiral ligand exist as a pair of pseudo-enantiomers, which can be interconverted by irradiation with light of different wavelengths. The opposite axial chirality of these pseudo-enantiomers is efficiently transferred to the manganese(III) salen catalyst. With this switchable supramolecular catalyst, the enantioselectivity of the epoxidation of a variety of alkenes can be controlled, resulting in opposite enantiomeric excesses of the epoxide products. This transfer of chirality from a photoswitchable anionic ligand to a metal complex broadens the scope of supramolecular catalysts.

Asymmetric Monomer Design Enables Structural Control of M(Salen)-Type Polymers.

Project description:Conductive and electrochemically active polymers consisting of Salen-type metal complexes as building blocks are of interest for energy storage and conversion applications. Asymmetric monomer design is a powerful tool for fine-tuning the practical properties of conductive electrochemically active polymers but has never been employed for polymers of M(Salen)]. In this work, we synthesize a series of novel conducting polymers composed of a nonsymmetrical electropolymerizable copper Salen-type complex (Cu(3-MeOSal-Sal)en). We show that asymmetrical monomer design provides easy control of the coupling site via polymerization potential control. With in-situ electrochemical methods such as UV-vis-NIR (ultraviolet-visible-near infrared) spectroscopy, EQCM (electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance), and electrochemical conductivity measurements, we elucidate how the properties of these polymers are defined by chain length, order, and cross-linking. We found that the highest conductivity in the series has a polymer with the shortest chain length, which emphasizes the importance of intermolecular iterations in polymers of [M(Salen)].
