Cardiac glycosides (CGs) are natural compounds sharing the ability to operate as potent inhibitors of the plasma membrane Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+</sup>-ATPase, hence promoting-via an indirect mechanism-the intracellular accumulation of Ca<sup>2+</sup> ions.
