Three-dimensional quantum photonic elements based on single nitrogen vacancy-centres in laser-written microstructures.

ABSTRACT: To fully integrate quantum optical technology, active quantum systems must be combined with resonant microstructures and optical interconnects harvesting and routing photons in three diemsnsions (3D) on one chip. We fabricate such combined structures for the first time by using two-photon laser lithography and a photoresist containing nanodiamonds including nitrogen vacancy-centers. As an example for possible functionality, single-photon generation, collection, and transport is successfully accomplished. The single photons are efficiently collected via resonators and routed in 3D through waveguides, all on one optical chip. Our one-step fabrication scheme is easy to implement, scalable and flexible. Thus, other complex assemblies of 3D quantum optical structures are feasible as well.

Nanodiamond-based nanostructures for coupling nitrogen-vacancy centres to metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots.

Project description:The ability to control the interaction between nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond and photonic and/or broadband plasmonic nanostructures is crucial for the development of solid-state quantum devices with optimum performance. However, existing methods typically employ top-down fabrication, which restrict scalable and feasible manipulation of nitrogen-vacancy centres. Here, we develop a general bottom-up approach to fabricate an emerging class of freestanding nanodiamond-based hybrid nanostructures with external functional units of either plasmonic nanoparticles or excitonic quantum dots. Precise control of the structural parameters (including size, composition, coverage and spacing of the external functional units) is achieved, representing a pre-requisite for exploring the underlying physics. Fine tuning of the emission characteristics through structural regulation is demonstrated by performing single-particle optical studies. This study opens a rich toolbox to tailor properties of quantum emitters, which can facilitate design guidelines for devices based on nitrogen-vacancy centres that use these freestanding hybrid nanostructures as building blocks.

Stimulated emission from nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond.

Project description:Stimulated emission is the process fundamental to laser operation, thereby producing coherent photon output. Despite negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centres being discussed as a potential laser medium since the 1980s, there have been no definitive observations of stimulated emission from ensembles of NV- to date. Here we show both theoretical and experimental evidence for stimulated emission from NV- using light in the phonon sidebands around 700 nm. Furthermore, we show the transition from stimulated emission to photoionization as the stimulating laser wavelength is reduced from 700 to 620 nm. While lasing at the zero-phonon line is suppressed by ionization, our results open the possibility of diamond lasers based on NV- centres, tuneable over the phonon sideband. This broadens the applications of NV- magnetometers from single centre nanoscale sensors to a new generation of ultra-precise ensemble laser sensors, which exploit the contrast and signal amplification of a lasing system.

Sensing phases of water via nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond.

Project description:Ultra-thin layers of liquids on a surface behave differently from bulk liquids due to liquid-surface interactions. Some examples are significant changes in diffusion properties and the temperature at which the liquid-solid phase transition takes place. Indeed, molecular dynamics simulations suggest that thin layers of water on a diamond surface may remain solid even well above room temperature. However, because of the small volumes that are involved, it is exceedingly difficult to examine these phenomena experimentally with current technologies. In this context, shallow NV centres promise a highly sensitive tool for the investigation of magnetic signals emanating from liquids and solids that are deposited on the surface of a diamond. Moreover, NV centres are non-invasive sensors with extraordinary performance even at room-temperature. To that end, we present here a theoretical work, complemented with numerical evidence based on bosonization techniques, that predicts the measurable signal from a single NV centre when interacting with large spin baths in different configurations. In fact, by means of continuous dynamical decoupling, the polarization exchange between a single NV centre and the hydrogen nuclear spins from the water molecules is enhanced, leading to differences in the coherent dynamics of the NV centre that are interpreted as an unambiguous trace of the molecular structure. We therefore propose single NV centres as sensors capable to resolve structural water features at the nanoscale and even sensitive to phase transitions.

Geometrically-controlled polarisation processing in femtosecond-laser-written photonic circuits.

Project description:Polarisation of light is a powerful and widely used degree of freedom to encode information, both in classical and quantum applications. In particular, quantum information technologies based on photons are being revolutionised by the use of integrated photonic circuits. It is therefore very important to be able to manipulate the polarisation of photons in such circuits. We experimentally demonstrate the fabrication by femtosecond laser micromachining of components such as polarisation insensitive and polarising directional couplers, operating at 1550 nm wavelength, where the two opposite behaviours are achieved just by controlling the geometric layout of the photonic circuits, being the waveguides fabricated with the same irradiation recipe. We expect to employ this approach in complex integrated photonic devices, capable of a full control of the photons polarisation for quantum cryptography, quantum computation and quantum teleportation experiments.

Dual-media laser system: Nitrogen vacancy diamond and red semiconductor laser.

Project description:Diamond is a potential host material for laser applications due to its exceptional thermal properties, ultrawide bandgap, and color centers, which promise gain across the visible spectrum. More recently, coherent laser methods offer improved sensitivity for magnetometry. However, diamond fabrication is difficult in comparison to other crystalline matrices, and many optical loss channels are not yet understood. Here, we demonstrate a continuous-wave laser threshold as a function of the pump intensity on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers. To achieve this, we constructed a laser cavity with both an NV diamond medium and an intracavity antireflection-coated diode laser. This dual-medium approach compensates intrinsic losses of the cavity by providing a fixed additional gain below threshold of the diode laser. We observe a continuous-wave laser threshold of the laser system and linewidth narrowing with increasing green pump power on the NV centers. Our results are a major development toward coherent approaches to magnetometry.

Productivity of Concentration-Dependent Conversion of Substitutional Nitrogen Atoms into Nitrogen-Vacancy Quantum Emitters in Synthetic-Diamond by Ultrashort Laser Pulses.

Project description:Tightly focused 515-nm, 0.3-ps laser pulses modify in a laser filamentation regime the crystalline structure of an Ib-type high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) synthesized diamond in a thin-plate form. The modified microregions (micromarks) in the yellow and colorless crystal zones, possessing different concentrations of elementary substitutional nitrogen (N) impurity atoms (C-centers), exhibit their strongly diminished local IR absorption (upon correction to the thickness scaling factor). Simultaneously, local visible-range (400-550 nm) absorption coefficients were increased, and photoluminescence (PL) yield was strongly enhanced in the broad range of 450-800 nm. The strong yellow-red PL enhancement saturates with laser exposure, implying the complete conversion of C-centers into nitrogen-vacancy (NV0,-) ones due to the laser-induced generation of Frenkel "interstitial-vacancy" I-V carbon pairs. The other emerging blue-green (>470 nm) and green-yellow (>500 nm) PL bands were also simultaneously saturated versus the laser exposure. The observed IR/optical absorption and PL spectral changes enlighten the ultrashort pulse laser inscription of NV0--based quantum-emitter centers in synthetic diamonds and enable the evaluation of the productivity of their inscription along with the corresponding I-V generation rates.

Photoelectric detection of electron spin resonance of nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond.

Project description:The readout of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centre electron spins is essential for applications in quantum computation, metrology and sensing. Conventional readout protocols are based on the detection of photons emitted from nitrogen-vacancy centres, a process limited by the efficiency of photon collection. We report on an alternative principle for detecting the magnetic resonance of nitrogen-vacancy centres, allowing the direct photoelectric readout of nitrogen-vacancy centres spin state in an all-diamond device. The photocurrent detection of magnetic resonance scheme is based on the detection of charge carriers promoted to the conduction band of diamond by two-photon ionization of nitrogen-vacancy centres. The optical and photoelectric detection of magnetic resonance are compared, by performing both types of measurements simultaneously. The minima detected in the measured photocurrent at resonant microwave frequencies are attributed to the spin-dependent ionization dynamics of nitrogen-vacancy, originating from spin-selective non-radiative transitions to the metastable singlet state.

Private communication with quantum cascade laser photonic chaos.

Project description:Mid-infrared free-space optical communication has a large potential for high speed communication due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, data security against eavesdroppers is among the obstacles for private free-space communication. Here, we show that two uni-directionally coupled quantum cascade lasers operating in the chaotic regime and the synchronization between them allow for the extraction of the information that has been camouflaged in the chaotic emission. This building block represents a key tool to implement a high degree of privacy directly on the physical layer. We realize a proof-of-concept communication at a wavelength of 5.7 μm with a message encryption at a bit rate of 0.5 Mbit/s. Our demonstration of private free-space communication between a transmitter and receiver opens strategies for physical encryption and decryption of a digital message.

Atom-Photon Coupling from Nitrogen-vacancy Centres Embedded in Tellurite Microspheres.

Project description:We have developed a technique for creating high quality tellurite microspheres with embedded nanodiamonds (NDs) containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres. This hybrid method allows fluorescence of the NVs in the NDs to be directly, rather than evanescently, coupled to the whispering gallery modes of the tellurite microspheres at room temperature. As a demonstration of its sensing potential, shifting of the resonance peaks is also demonstrated by coating a sphere surface with a liquid layer. This new approach is a robust way of creating cavities for use in quantum and sensing applications.

Photonic Majorana quantum cascade laser with polarization-winding emission.

Project description:Topological cavities, whose modes are protected against perturbations, are promising candidates for novel semiconductor laser devices. To date, there have been several demonstrations of topological lasers (TLs) exhibiting robust lasing modes. The possibility of achieving nontrivial beam profiles in TLs has recently been explored in the form of vortex wavefront emissions enabled by a structured optical pump or strong magnetic field, which are inconvenient for device applications. Electrically pumped TLs, by contrast, have attracted attention for their compact footprint and easy on-chip integration with photonic circuits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an electrically pumped TL based on photonic analogue of a Majorana zero mode (MZM), implemented monolithically on a quantum cascade chip. We show that the MZM emits a cylindrical vector (CV) beam, with a topologically nontrivial polarization profile from a terahertz (THz) semiconductor laser.
