GigaDB: announcing the GigaScience database.

ABSTRACT: With the launch of GigaScience journal, here we provide insight into the accompanying database GigaDB, which allows the integration of manuscript publication with supporting data and tools. Reinforcing and upholding GigaScience's goals to promote open-data and reproducibility of research, GigaDB also aims to provide a home, when a suitable public repository does not exist, for the supporting data or tools featured in the journal and beyond.

Increased interactivity and improvements to the GigaScience database, GigaDB.

Project description:With a large increase in the volume and type of data archived in GigaScience Database (GigaDB) since its launch in 2011, we have studied the metrics and user patterns to assess the important aspects needed to best suit current and future use. This has led to new front-end developments and enhanced interactivity and functionality that greatly improve user experience. In this article, we present an overview of the current practices including the Biocurational role of the GigaDB staff, the broad usage metrics of GigaDB datasets and an update on how the GigaDB platform has been overhauled and enhanced to improve the stability and functionality of the codebase. Finally, we report on future directions for the GigaDB resource.

Peering into peer-review at GigaScience.

Project description:Fostering and promoting more open and transparent science is one of the goals of GigaScience. One of the ways we have been doing this is by throwing light on the peer-review process and carrying out open peer-review as standard. In this editorial, we provide our rationale for undertaking this policy, give examples of our positive experiences to date, and encourage others to open up the normally opaque publication process.

Announcing the ’s data sharing policy.

Project description:As librarians are generally advocates of open access and data sharing, it is a bit surprising that peer-reviewed journals in the field of librarianship have been slow to adopt data sharing policies. Starting October 1, 2019, the is taking a step forward and implementing a firm data sharing policy to increase the rigor and reproducibility of published research, enable data reuse, and promote open science. This editorial explains the data sharing policy, describes how compliance with the policy will fit into the journal’s workflow, and provides further guidance for preparing for data sharing.

A Decade of GigaScience: GigaDB and the Open Data Movement.

Project description:The increasingly multidisciplinary nature of scientific research necessitates a need for Open Data repositories that can archive data in support of publications in scientific journals. Recognising this need, even before GigaScience launched in 2012, GigaDB was already in place and taking data for a year before (making it 11 this year). Since GigaDB launched, there has been a consistent growth in this resource in terms of data volume, data discoverability and data re-use. In this commentary, we provide a retrospective of key changes over the last decade, and the role of Data Curation in enhancing the user experience. Furthermore we explore a much needed emphasis on enabling researchers to interact with and explore datasets prior to data download.

Neonatal Ethics Teaching Program - Scenario-Oriented Learning in Ethics: Announcing the Diagnosis of Trisomy 21.

Project description:IntroductionDelivering unexpected news to families can lead to emotionally charged conversations that cause discomfort and feelings of ineffectiveness in pediatric postgraduate trainees. Although prenatal screening exists, over 80% of trisomy 21 diagnoses continue to be made postnatally to unsuspecting parents who report a desire for better communication from health care professionals when they first receive the news of their child's diagnosis. Recognizing this area for improvement as reported in the literature, as well as the expressed desire from fellows in the University of Ottawa neonatal-perinatal medicine program for additional protected time to preemptively practice such disclosures, this trisomy 21 Scenario-Oriented Learning in Ethics workshop was developed.MethodsDuring the workshop, trainees are introduced to an evidence-based communication framework that provides them with strategies to facilitate clear knowledge translation and promote rapport with families for this specific clinical scenario. Participants are divided into small groups and practice disclosing a trisomy 21 diagnosis to a standardized patient in the role of a new mother. Each small group is supported by two trained facilitators who are experts in delivering life-altering news.ResultsThe pilot workshop was completed by 21 postgraduate trainees from the University of Ottawa. Qualitative evaluations were overwhelmingly positive, with feedback indicating high levels of perceived usefulness for the workshop.DiscussionBy preemptively practicing evidence-based communication, we hope to increase trainee confidence and preparation for trisomy 21 disclosures and improve parents' feelings regarding the quality of communication and support provided while receiving real-life trisomy 21 diagnoses.

Assessing healthcare professional knowledge, attitudes, and practices on hypertension management. Announcing a new World Hypertension League resource.

Project description:To assist hypertension control programs and specifically the development of training and education programs on hypertension for healthcare professionals, the World Hypertension League has developed a resource to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices on hypertension management. The resource assesses: (1) the importance of hypertension as a clinical and public health risk; (2) education in national or international hypertension recommendations; (3) lifestyle causes of hypertension; (4) measurement of blood pressure, screening, and diagnosis of hypertension; (5) lifestyle therapy counseling; (6) cardiovascular risk assessment; (7) antihypertensive drug therapy; and (8) adherence to therapy. In addition, the resource assesses the attitudes and practices of healthcare professionals for task sharing/shifting, use of care algorithms, and use of registries with performance reporting functions. The resource is designed to help support the Global Hearts Alliance to provide standardized and enhanced hypertension control globally.
