Descriptions of eleven Opatrini pupae (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) from China.

ABSTRACT: The pupal stage of eleven Opatrini species occuring in the northern China are described and a key for their identifiaction is provided. The species are Scleropatrum horridum horridum Reitter, Gonocephalum reticulatum Motschulsky, Opatrum (Opatrum) subaratum Faldermann, Eumylada potanini (Reitter), Eumylada punctifera (Reitter), Penthicus (Myladion) alashanicus (Reichardt), Penthicus (Myladion) nojonicus (Kaszab), Myladina unguiculina Reitter, Melanesthes (Opatronesthes) rugipennis Reitter, Melanesthes (Melanesthes) maxima maxima Ménétriès and Melanesthes (Melanesthes) jintaiensis Ren.

Project description:Three species of the genus Xenocerogria Merkl, 2007 have been recorded in China, Xenocerogriafeai (Borchmann, 1911), Xenocerogriaignota (Borchmann, 1941) and Xenocerogriaruficollis (Borchmann, 1912). Xenoceraxanthisma Chen, 2002 is proposed as a junior synonym of Xenocerogriaruficollis. Lectotype of Xenocerogriaignota is designated, and the species is transferred to the genus Lagria Fabricius, 1775. New Chinese province records of Xenocerogriaruficollis are provided.

Larvae of the genus Eleodes (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae): matrix-based descriptions, cladistic analysis, and key to late instars.

Project description:Darkling beetle larvae (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) are collectively referred to as false wireworms. Larvae from several species in the genus Eleodes are considered to be agricultural pests, though relatively little work has been done to associate larvae with adults of the same species and only a handful of species have been characterized in their larval state. Morphological characters from late instar larvae were examined and coded to produce a matrix in the server-based content management system mx. The resulting morphology matrix was used to produce larval species descriptions, reconstruct a phylogeny, and build a key to the species included in the matrix. Larvae are described for the first time for the following 12 species: Eleodes anthracinus Blaisdell, Eleodes carbonarius (Say), Eleodes caudiferus LeConte, Eleodes extricatus (Say), Eleodes goryi Solier, Eleodes hispilabris (Say), Eleodes nigropilosus LeConte, Eleodes pilosus Horn, Eleodes subnitens LeConte, Eleodes tenuipes Casey, Eleodes tribulus Thomas, and Eleodes wheeleri Aalbu, Smith & Triplehorn. The larval stage of Eleodes armatus LeConte is redescribed with additional characters to differentiate it from the newly described congeneric larvae.

A new species is described and illustrated under the name of Strongylium liangi sp. n. (CHINA: Yunnan). Project description:Three new species of darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) belonging to the subgenus Leipopleura of the genus Bioramix Bates, 1879, Bioramix (Leipopleura) baqenensis Li & Egorov, sp. n., Bioramix (Leipopleura) nyainrongensis Li & Egorov, sp. n., and Bioramix (Leipopleura) banbarensis Li & Egorov, sp. n. are described from the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Additionally, a new identification key is provided to all known Chinese representatives of the subgenus Leipopleura.

Project description:The genus Pseudostegana (Okada, 1978) currently contains thirty-nine described species. A number of Pseudostegana were collected from the fieldwork in southwestern China from 2010 to 2017. Eleven new species were discovered and are described from southwestern China: Pseudostegana alpina Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana amnicola Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana amoena Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana mailangang Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana meiduo Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana meiji Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana mystica Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana stictiptrata Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana stigmatptera Zhang & Chen, sp. nov.; Pseudostegana ximalaya Zhang & Chen, sp. nov. and Pseudostegana zhuoma Zhang & Chen, sp. nov. A key to all Chinese Pseudostegana species based on morphological characters is provided. Two mitochondrial loci (COI and ND2) and one nuclear locus (28S rRNA) were sequenced for the Pseudostegana specimens, and Bayesian and RAxML concatenated analyses were run. Molecular species delimitation is performed using the distance-based automatic barcode gap discovery (ABGD) method. Molecular data support the morphological characteristics observed among these Chinese species and confirm the new species as being distinctly different.

The bionomics of species in this genus are unknown.New informationThe genus Falsonnannocerus Pic, 1947 is recorded for the first time from China, including two species: F.thailandicus Masumoto, 1986 from Yunnan and F.haizhuensis sp. n. from Guangdong. Morphological characters of the two species are illustrated and compared. The photographs of female reproductive system, which were never shown for this genus before, are also presented.
