5-(Naphthalen-1-yl)isophthalic acid-dimethyl sulfoxide-water (2/1/2).

ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, 2C18H12O4·C2H6OS·2H2O, consists of four crystallographically independent mol-ecules of 5-(naphthalen-1-yl)isophthalic acid, two dimethyl sulfoxide and four water mol-ecules. The dihedral angles formed by the the planes of the aromatic fragments of the organic mol-ecules range from 57.4?(1) to 59.1?(1)°. In the crystal, multiple O-H?O hydrogen bonds link the water mol-ecules with the carbonyl and sulfoxide groups, giving rise to double ribbons along the b-axis direction.

Project description:In the title compound, C18H10O8·4C2H6OS, the mid-point of the triple bond of the main mol-ecule is located on a special position, i.e. about an inversion center. The carboxyl groups are twisted slightly out of the planes of the aromatic rings to which they are attached, making dihedral angles of 24.89 (1) and 7.40 (2)°. The cystal packing features strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, weaker C-H⋯O inter-actions and O⋯S contacts [3.0981 (11) Å] and displays channel-like voids extending along the a-axis direction which contain the dimethyl sulfoxide solvent mol-ecules.

Project description:In the title compound, [PdCl(2)(C(5)H(6)BNO(2))(2)]·2C(2)H(6)OS, the Pd(II) ion is located on an inversion centre and is four-coordinated in a trans square-planar geometry by two chloride ions and two (pyridin-4-yl)boronic acid ligands. The Pd-N and Pd-Cl distances are 2.023?(2) and 2.2977?(7)?Å, respectively, and the average N-Pd-Cl angle is 90°. The dimethyl sulfoxide solvent mol-ecules play a key role in the crystal structure by bridging the complex mol-ecules via O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming tapes running along the b axis. C-H?O inter-actions also contribute to the cohesion of the crystal.

The solvent DMSO molecule is disordered over two orientations with equal occupancy.

Project description:In the title compound, [Cu(C16H8Br3N2O)2]·C2H6OS, the CuII atom is tetra-coordinated in a square-planar coordination, being surrounded by two N atoms and two O atoms from two N,O-bidentate (E)-1-[(2,4,6-tri-bromo-phen-yl)diazen-yl]naphthalen-2-olate ligands. The two N atoms and two O atoms around the metal center are trans to each other, with an O-Cu-O bond angle of 177.90?(16)° and a N-Cu-N bond angle of 177.8?(2)°. The average distances between the CuII atom and the coordinated O and N atoms are 1.892?(4) and 1.976?(4)?Å, respectively. In the crystal, complexes are linked by C-H?O hydrogen bonds and by ?-? inter-actions involving adjacent naphthalene ring systems [centroid-centroid distance = 3.679?(4)?Å]. The disordered DMSO mol-ecules inter-act weakly with the complex mol-ecules, being positioned in the voids left by the packing arrangement of the square-planar complexes. The DMSO solvent mol-ecule is disordered over two positions with occupancies of 0.70 and 0.30.

In the anion, the planes of the benzene rings are twisted with respect to each other by 71.5?(5)°. Disorder was modelled for the dimethyl sulfoxide solvent mol-ecule over two set of sites in a 0.7487?(13):0.2513?(13) ratio. In the crystal, the cations are linked by inversion-generated pairs of N-H?N hydrogen bonds, with an R 2 (2)(8) graph-set motif. The cation donates two N-H?O hydrogen bonds to the anion, also generating an R 2 (2)(8) loop. These inter-actions, along with cation-solvent N-H?O hydrogen bonds, and cation-anion C-H?F, solvent-anion C-H?O and C-H?F inter-actions, result in a three-dimensional network.

Effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide on Surface Water near Phospholipid Bilayers.

Project description:Despite much effort to probe the properties of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution, the effects of DMSO on water, especially near plasma membrane surfaces, still remain elusive. By performing molecular dynamics simulations at varying DMSO concentrations (XDMSO), we study how DMSO affects structural and dynamical properties of water in the vicinity of phospholipid bilayers. As proposed by a number of experiments, our simulations confirm that DMSO induces dehydration from bilayer surfaces and disrupts the H-bond structure of water. However, DMSO-enhanced water diffusivity at solvent-bilayer interfaces, an intriguing discovery reported by a spin-label measurement, is not confirmed in our simulations. To resolve this discrepancy, we examine the location of the spin label (Tempo) relative to the solvent-bilayer interface. In accord with the evidence in the literature, our simulations, which explicitly model Tempo-phosphatidylcholine, find that the Tempo moiety is equilibrated at ∼8-10 Å below the bilayer surface. Furthermore, the DMSO-enhanced surface-water diffusion is confirmed only when water diffusion is analyzed around the Tempo moiety that is immersed below the bilayer surface, which implies that the experimentally detected signal of water using Tempo stems from the interior of bilayers, not from the interface. Our analysis finds that the increase of water diffusion below the bilayer surface is coupled to the increase of area per lipid with an increasing XDMSO(≲10mol%). Underscoring the hydrophobic nature of the Tempo moiety, our study calls for careful re-evaluation of the use of Tempo in measurements on lipid bilayer surfaces.
