Monoaryloxide Pyrrolide (MAP) Imido Alkylidene Complexes of Molybdenum and Tungsten That Contain 2,6-Bis(2,5-R₂-pyrrolyl)phenoxide (R = i-Pr, Ph) Ligands and an Unsubstituted Metallacyclobutane on Its Way to Losing Ethylene.

ABSTRACT: We report the synthesis of Mo and W MAP complexes that contain O-2,6-(2,5-R₂-pyrrolyl)₂C₆H₃ (2,6-dipyrrolylphenoxide or ODPP^R) ligands in which R = i-Pr, Ph. W(NAr)(CH-t-Bu)(Pyr)(ODPP^Ph) (4a; Ar = 2,6-disopropylphenyl, Pyr = pyrrolide) reacts readily with ethylene to yield a metallacyclobutane complex, W(NAr)(C₃H₆)(Pyr)(ODPP^Ph) (5). The structure of 5 in the solid state shows that it is approximately a square pyramid with the WC₄ ring spanning apical and basal positions. This SP' structure, which has never been observed as an actual intermediate, must now be regarded as an integral feature of the metathesis reaction.

Project description:Tungsten NArR alkylidene complexes have been prepared that contain the electron-withdrawing ArR groups 2,4,6-X3C6H2 (ArX3, X = Cl, Br), 2,6-Cl2-4-CF3C6H2 (ArCl2CF3), and 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3 (Ar(CF3)2). Reported complexes include W(NArR)2Cl2(dme) (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), W(NArR)2(CH2CMe3)2, W(NArR)(CHCMe3)(OTf)2(dme), and W(NArR)(CHCMe3)(ODBMP)2 (DBMP = 4-Me-2,6-(CHPh2)C6H2). Project description:Molybdenum or tungsten monoaryloxide pyrrolide (MAP) complexes that contain OHIPT as the aryloxide (hexaisopropylterphenoxide) are effective catalysts for homocoupling of simple (E)-1,3-dienes to give (E,Z,E)-trienes in high yield and with high Z selectivities. A vinylalkylidene MAP species was shown to have the expected syn structure in an X-ray study. MAP catalysts that contain OHMT (hexamethylterphenoxide) are relatively inefficient.

Inversion of configuration at the metal in diastereomeric imido alkylidene monoaryloxide monopyrrolide complexes of molybdenum.

Project description:The two diastereomers of Mo(NAr)(CHCMe(2)Ph)(2,5-dimethylpyrrolide)(1), (S(M)R(1))-2 and (R(M)R(1))-2, respectively, where 1 is an enantiomerically pure (R) phenoxide and Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, form adducts with PMe(3). One of these ((R(M)R(1))-2(PMe(3))) has been isolated. An X-ray structure reveals that PMe(3) has added trans to the pyrrolide; it is a model for where an olefin would attack the metal. Trimethylphosphine will catalyze slow interconversion of (S(M)R(1))-2 and (R(M)R(1))-2 via formation of weak PMe(3) adducts. Reactions between (S(M)R(1))-2 or (R(M)R(1))-2 and ethylene yield Mo(NAr)(CH(2))(Me(2)Pyr)(1) species in which the configuration at Mo is inverted by ethylene at a rate of the order of the NMR time scale at 22 degrees C via formation of metallacyclobutane intermediates with imido and aryloxide ligands in axial positions. A reactant olefin is proposed to approach Mo and the product olefin to leave Mo trans to the pyrrolide.

Bipyridine Adducts of Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene and Imido Alkylidyne Complexes.

Project description:Seven bipyridine adducts of molybdenum imido alkylidene bispyrrolide complexes of the type Mo(NR)(CHCMe(2)R')(Pyr)(2)(bipy) (1a-1g; R = 2,6-i-Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (Ar), adamantyl (Ad), 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (Ar'), 2-i-PrC(6)H(4) (Ar(iPr)), 2-ClC(6)H(4) (Ar(Cl)), 2-t-BuC(6)H(4) (Ar(t) (Bu)), and 2-MesitylC(6)H(4) (Ar(M)), respectively; R' = Me, Ph) have been prepared using three different methods. Up to three isomers of the adducts are observed that are proposed to be the trans and two possible cis pyrrolide isomers of syn alkylidenes. Sonication of a mixture containing 1a-1g, HMTOH (2,6-dimesitylphenol), and ZnCl(2)(dioxane) led to the formation of MAP species of the type Mo(NR)(CHCMe(2)R')(Pyr)(OHMT) (3a-3g). DCMNBD (2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene) is polymerized employing 3a-3g as initiators to yield >98% cis,syndiotactic poly(DCMNBD). Attempts to prepare bipy adducts of bisdimethylpyrrolide complexes led to formation of imido alkylidyne complexes of the type Mo(NR)(CCMe(2)R')(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (Me(2)Pyr = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolide; 4a - 4g) through a ligand-induced migration of an alkylidene α proton to a dimethylpyrrolide ligand. X-ray structures of Mo(NAr)(CHCMe(2)Ph)(Pyr)(2)(bipy) (1a), Mo(NAr(iPr))(CHCMe(2)Ph)(Pyr)(OHMT) (3d), Mo(NAr)(CCMe(2)Ph)(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (4a), and Mo(NAr(T))(CCMe(3))(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (Ar(T) = 2-(2,4,6-i-Pr(3)C(6)H(2))C(6)H(4); 4g) showed structures with the normal bond lengths and angles.

Synthesis of High Oxidation State Molybdenum Imido Heteroatom-Substituted Alkylidene Complexes.

Project description:Reactions between Mo(NAr)(CHR)(Me2Pyr)-(OTPP) (Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3, R = H or CHCMe2Ph, Me2Pyr = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolide, OTPP = O-2,3,5,6-Ph4C6H) and CH2=CHX where X = B(pin), SiMe3, N-carbazolyl, N-pyrrolidinonyl, PPh2, OPr, or SPh lead to Mo(NAr)(CHX)-(Me2Pyr)(OTPP) complexes in good yield. All have been characterized through X-ray studies (as an acetonitrile adduct in the case of X = PPh2). The efficiencies of metathesis reactions initiated by Mo(NAr)(CHX)(Me2Pyr)(OTPP) complexes can be rationalized on the basis of steric factors; electronic differences imposed as a consequence of X being bound to the alkylidene carbon do not seem to play a major role. Side reactions that promote catalyst decomposition do not appear to be a serious limitation for Mo=CHX species.

Z-Selective olefin metathesis reactions promoted by tungsten oxo alkylidene complexes.

Project description:Addition of LiOHMT (OHMT = O-2,6-dimesitylphenoxide) to W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(PMe(2)Ph)(2)Cl(2) led to WO(CH-t-Bu)Cl(OHMT)(PMe(2)Ph) (4). Subsequent addition of Li(2,5-Me(2)C(4)H(2)N) to 4 yielded yellow W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(OHMT)(Me(2)Pyr)(PMe(2)Ph) (5). Compound 5 is a highly effective catalyst for the Z-selective coupling of selected terminal olefins (at 0.2% loading) to give product in >75% yield with >99% Z configuration. Addition of 2 equiv of B(C(6)F(5))(3) to 5 afforded a catalyst activated at the oxo ligand by B(C(6)F(5))(3). 5·B(C(6)F(5))(3) is a highly active catalyst that produces thermodynamic products (~20% Z).

Mechanism of Olefin Metathesis with Neutral and Cationic Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes.

Project description:A series of neutral molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) bistriflate and monotriflate monoalkoxide complexes as well as cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene triflate complexes have been subjected to NMR spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic, and reaction kinetic measurements in order to gain a comprehensive understanding about the underlying mechanism in olefin metathesis of this new type of catalysts. On the basis of experimental evidence and on DFT calculations (BP86/def2-TZVP/D3/cosmo) for the entire mechanism, olefinic substrates coordinate trans to the NHC of neutral 16-electron complexes via an associative mechanism, followed by dissociation of an anionic ligand (e.g., triflate) and formation of an intermediary molybdacyclobutane trans to the NHC. Formation of a cationic complex is crucial in order to become olefin metathesis active. Variations in the NHC, the imido, the alkoxide, and the noncoordinating anion revealed their influence on reactivity. The reaction of neutral 16-electron complexes with 2-methoxystyrene is faster for catalysts bearing one triflate and one fluorinated alkoxide than for catalysts bearing two triflate ligands. This is also reflected by the Gibbs free energy values for the transition states, Δ G‡303, which are significantly lower for catalysts bearing only one triflate than for the corresponding bistriflate complexes. Reaction of a solvent-stabilized cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) monotriflate complex with 2-methoxystyrene proceeded via an associative mechanism too. Reaction rates of both solvent-free and solvent-stabilized cationic Mo imido alkylidene NHC catalysts with 2-methoxystyrene are controlled by the cross-metathesis step but not by adduct formation.

Origin and Use of Hydroxyl Group Tolerance in Cationic Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts.

Project description:The origin of hydroxyl group tolerance in neutral and especially cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes has been investigated. A wide range of catalysts was prepared and tested. Most cationic complexes can be handled in air without difficulty and display an unprecedented stability towards water and alcohols. NHC complexes were successfully used with substrates containing the hydroxyl functionality in acyclic diene metathesis polymerization, homo-, cross and ring-opening cross metathesis reactions. The catalysts remain active even in 2-PrOH and are applicable in ring-opening metathesis polymerization and alkene homometathesis using alcohols as solvent. The use of weakly basic bidentate, hemilabile anionic ligands such as triflate or pentafluorobenzoate and weakly basic aromatic imido ligands in combination with a sterically demanding 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene NHC ligand was found essential for reactive and yet robust catalysts.

Synthesis of Molybdenum and Tungsten Alkylidene Complexes That Contain Sterically Demanding Arenethiolate Ligands.

Project description:Imido alkylidene complexes of Mo and W and oxo alkylidene complexes of W that contain thiophenoxide ligands of the type S-2,3,5,6-Ph4C6H (STPP) and S-2,6-(mesityl)2C6H3 (SHMT = S-hexamethylterphenyl) have been prepared in order to compare their metathesis activity with that of the analogous phenoxide complexes. All thiolate complexes were significantly slower (up to ?10× slower) for the metathesis homocoupling of 1-octene or polymerization of 2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornene, and none of them was Z-selective. The slower rates could be attributed to the greater ?-donating ability of a thiophenoxide versus the analogous phenoxide and consequently a higher electron density at the metal in the thiophenoxide complexes.

Reversible N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Induced α-H Abstraction in Tungsten(VI) Imido Dialkyl Dialkoxide Complexes.

Project description:The first reversible N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) induced α-H abstraction in tungsten(VI) imido-dialkyl dialkoxide complexes is reported. Treatment of W(NAr)(CH2 Ph)2 (OtBu)2 (Ar=2,6-dichlorophenyl, 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) with different NHCs leads to the formation of complexes of the type W(NAr)(CHPh)(NHC)(CH2 Ph)(OtBu) in excellent isolated yields of up to 96 %. The highly unusual release of the tert-butoxide ligand as tBuOH in the course of the reaction was observed. The formed alkylidene complexes and tBuOH are in an equilibrium with the NHC and the dialkyl complexes. Reaction kinetics were monitored by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. A correlation between the steric and electronic properties of the NHC and the reaction rates was observed. Kinetics of a deuterium-labeled complex in comparison to its non-deuterated counterpart revealed the presence of a strong primary kinetic isotope effect (KIE) of 4.2, indicating that α-H abstraction is the rate-determining step (RDS) of the reaction.
