Phosphate binding with a thiophene-based azamacrocycle in water.

ABSTRACT: Structural characterization of the phosphate complex with a thiophene-based macrocycle suggests that two dihydrogen phosphates in a dimeric form are encapsulated in the cavity via several hydrogen bonds from NH···O and CH···O interactions. In the lattice framework, the two dimers are linearly hydrogen-bonded to form a tetramer. 1H NMR titrations suggest that the host forms a 1:1 complex with phosphate, showing an association constant of 120 M-1 in D2O at pH = 5.5. The host guest complexation was further confirmed by ESI-MS in a gas phase.

Solution and structural binding studies of phosphate with thiophene-based azamacrocycles.

Project description:Two thiophene-based monocyclic receptors L1 and L2 have been studied for phosphate binding in solutions (D2O and DMSO-d6 ) by 1H NMR and 31P NMR titrations, and in the solid state by single crystal X-ray analysis. Results from 1H NMR titrations suggest that the ligands bind phosphate anions in a 1:2 binding mode in DMSO-d6 , with the binding constants of 5.25 and 4.20 (in log K), respectively. The binding of phosphate to L1 and L2 was further supported by 31P NMR in D2O at pH = 5.2. The crystal structure of the phosphate complex of L1 reveals unambiguous proof for the formation of a ditopic complex via multiple hydrogen bonds from NH···O and CH···O interactions.

Experimental and theoretical studies on halide binding with a p-xylyl-based azamacrocycle.

Project description:A p-xylyl-based macrocycle L has been synthesized and its binding properties with halides have been investigated by (1)H NMR titrations, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As investigated by (1)H NMR titrations, the ligand preferentially binds a halide in a 1:2 binding mode, with the association constants (in log K2) of 2.82, 2.70, 2.28, and 2.20 for fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide, respectively. The overall binding trend was found to be in the order of fluoride > chloride > bromide > iodide, reflecting that the binding strength correlates with the relative basicity and size of the respective halide. Crystallographic studies indicate that the ligand forms 1:2 complexes with chloride, bromide and iodide. In the chloride complex, the ligand is hexaprotonated and each chloride is held via three NH···Cl(-) bonds. The ligand is tetraprotonated for the other complexes, where each halide is H-bonded to two secondary ammonium NH(+) groups via NH···X(-) bonds. The results of DFT calculations performed on [H6L](6+) at M062x/6-311G (d,p) level in both gas and solvent phases, suggest that the ligand binds halides with the binding energy in the order of F(-) > Cl(-) > Br(-) > I(-), supporting the experimental data obtained from (1)H NMR studies. Results from DFT calculations further indicate that a 1:2 binding is energetically more favorable than a 1:1 binding of the ligand.

Binding and selectivity aspects of an expanded azamacrocycle for anions.

Project description:An expanded azamacrocycle L, containing four secondary and two tertiary amines was synthesized, and its binding ability towards chloride, bromide, iodide, sulfate, nitrate and perchlorate were determined by (1)H NMR titrations in D(2)O at pH 1.7. The results suggest that the ligand is capable of forming a complex with each of the anions examined, showing the selectivity for sulfate in water. X-ray diffraction analysis of the perchlorate complex of L suggests that the ligand is tetraprotonated and is involved in interacting anions from both sides forming a ditopic complex with strong NH···O bonds. In the packing diagram, the macrocycles and external perchlorates are alternatively linked though hydrogen bonding to form a 1D chain.

Thiophene-based covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:We report the synthesis and characterization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) incorporating thiophene-based building blocks. We show that these are amenable to reticular synthesis, and that bent ditopic monomers, such as 2,5-thiophenediboronic acid, are defect-prone building blocks that are susceptible to synthetic variations during COF synthesis. The synthesis and characterization of an unusual charge transfer complex between thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diboronic acid and tetracyanoquinodimethane enabled by the unique COF architecture is also presented. Together, these results delineate important synthetic advances toward the implementation of COFs in electronic devices.

Thiophene-Based Conjugated Acetylenic Polymers with Dual Active Sites for Efficient Co-Catalyst-Free Photoelectrochemical Water Reduction in Alkaline Medium.

Project description:Although being attractive materials for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (PEC HER) under neutral or acidic conditions, conjugated polymers still show poor PEC HER performance in alkaline medium due to the lack of water dissociation sites. Herein, we demonstrate that tailoring the polymer skeleton from poly(diethynylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (pDET) to poly(2,6-diethynylbenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (pBDT) and poly(diethynyldithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene) (pDTT) in conjugated acetylenic polymers (CAPs) introduces highly efficient active sites for water dissociation. As a result, pDTT and pBDT, grown on Cu substrate, demonstrate benchmark photocurrent densities of 170 μA cm-2 and 120 μA cm-2 (at 0.3 V vs. RHE; pH 13), which are 4.2 and 3 times higher than that of pDET, respectively. Moreover, by combining DFT calculations and electrochemical operando resonance Raman spectroscopy, we propose that the electron-enriched Cβ of the outer thiophene rings of pDTT are the water dissociation active sites, while the -C≡C- bonds function as the active sites for hydrogen evolution.

Charge-assisted encapsulation of two chlorides by a hexaprotonated azamacrocycle.

Project description:A chloride complex of a hexaprotonated azamacrocycle has been isolated, and its structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography showing two encapsulated chloride anions in the cavity. The two internal guests are coordinated at two binding sites on the opposite side of the macrocycle through trigonal recognition by hydrogen-bonding interactions. The other four chlorides are located outside the cavity, each with a single hydrogen bond from secondary amines. Ab initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the encapsulation of two chlorides inside the cavity leads to a significant charge transfer from the anions to the protonated amines.

Amino(oligo)thiophene-based environmentally sensitive biomembrane chromophores.

Project description:There is a growing need for cellular imaging with fluorescent probes that emit at longer wavelengths to minimize the effects of absorption, autofluorescence, and scattering from biological tissue. In this paper a series of new environmentally sensitive hemicyanine dyes featuring amino(oligo)thiophene donors have been synthesized via aldol condensation between a 4-methylpyridinium salt and various amino(oligo)thiophene carboxaldehydes, which were, in turn, obtained from amination of bromo(oligo)thiophene carboxaldehyde. Side chains on these fluorophores impart a strong affinity for biological membranes. Compared with benzene analogues, these thiophene fluorophores show significant red shift in the absorption and emission spectra, offering compact red and near-infrared emitting fluorophores. More importantly, both the fluorescence quantum yields and the emission peaks are very sensitive to various environmental factors such as solvent polarity or viscosity, membrane potential, and membrane composition. These chromophores also exhibit strong nonlinear optical properties, including two-photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation, which are themselves environmentally sensitive. The combination of long wavelength fluorescence and nonlinear optical properties make these chromophores very suitable for applications that require sensing or imaging deep inside tissues.

Electroconductive Hydrogel Based on Functional Poly(Ethylenedioxy Thiophene).

Project description:Poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) with functional pendant groups bearing double bonds is synthesized and employed for the fabrication of electroactive hydrogels with advantageous characteristics: covalently cross-linked porous 3D scaffolds with notable swelling ratio, appropriate mechanical properties, electroactivity in physiological conditions, and suitability for proliferation and differentiation of C2C12 cells. This is a new approach for the fabrication of conductive engineered constructs.
