The Upper Limb Functional Index (ULFI) is an internationally widely used outcome measure with robust, valid psychometric properties. The purpose of study is to develop and validate a ULFI Spanish-version (ULFI-Sp).Methods
A two stage observational study was conducted. The ULFI was cross-culturally adapted to Spanish through double forward and backward translations, the psychometric properties were then validated. Participants (n = 126) with various upper limb conditions of >12 weeks duration completed the ULFI-Sp, QuickDASH and the Euroqol Health Questionnaire 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D-3 L). The full sample determined internal consistency, concurrent criterion validity, construct validity and factor structure; a subgroup (n = 35) determined reliability at seven days.Results
The ULFI-Sp demonstrated high internal consistency (α = 0.94) and reliability (r = 0.93). Factor structure was one-dimensional and supported construct validity. Criterion validity with the EQ-5D-3 L was fair and inversely correlated (r = -0.59). The QuickDASH data was unavailable for analysis due to excessive missing responses.Conclusions
The ULFI-Sp is a valid upper limb outcome measure with similar psychometric properties to the English language version.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The Lower Limb Functional Index (LLFI) is a relatively recently published regional outcome measure. The development article showed the LLFI had robust and valid clinimetric properties with sound psychometric and practical characteristics when compared to the Lower Limb Extremity Scale (LEFS) criterion standard. OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was cross cultural adaptation and validation of the LLFI Spanish-version (LLFI-Sp) in a Spanish population. METHODS:A two stage observational study was conducted. RESULTS:The LLFI-Sp demonstrated high but not excessive internal consistency (??=?0.91) and high reliability (ICC?=?0.96). The factor structure was one-dimensional which supported the construct validity. Criterion validity with the WOMAC was strong (r?=?0.77) and with the EQ-5D-3 L fair and inversely correlated (r?=?-0.62). The study limitations included the lack of longitudinal data and the determination of responsiveness. CONCLUSIONS:The LLFI-Sp supports the findings of the original English version as being a valid lower limb regional outcome measure. It demonstrated similar psychometric properties for internal consistency, validity, reliability, error score and factor structure.

Project description:STUDY DESIGN:Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to translate the Neck Disability Index (NDI) into the simplified-Chinese language and to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the new questionnaire. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:Neck pain is a major health problem resulting in major disability. NDI is the most frequently used scale for self-rating of disability due to neck pain. At present, there is no simplified-Chinese version of the NDI. The aims of this study were to culturally adapt and translate the NDI into the simplified-Chinese language (NDI-SC) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with neck pain. METHODS:The NDI was translated into simplified-Chinese version based on established guidelines. A total of 70 patients participated in this study. Patients were asked to complete a set of questionnaires comprising of their demographic information, the NDI-SC, and a visual analog scale (VAS) of pain. Fifty-six patients returned after 1 to 2 weeks to complete the same set of questionnaires and the global rating of change (GROC) scale. Then, the NDI-SC was evaluated for content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness. RESULTS:The NDI-SC demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach ??=?0.92) and good test-retest reliability (ICC2,1?=?0.85). Content validity was confirmed as no floor or ceiling effects were detected for the NDI-SC total score. Construct validity was established with factor analysis revealing two-factor subscales explaining 66% of the variance. The NDI-SC showed a strong correlation with VAS (Rp?=?0.61, P?<?0.001) and a moderate correlation with GROC (Rs?=?0.46, P?<?0.001). The correlation between NDI-SC change scores and VAS change scores was also moderate (Rp?=?0.59, P?<?0.001). CONCLUSION:The results showed that the NDI-SC is a reliable, valid, and responsive instrument to measure functional limitations in patients with neck pain. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:3.

Project description:BackgroundThe study aimed to translate the foot function index (FFI) questionnaire to Thai and to determine psychometric properties of the questionnaire among individuals with plantar foot complaints.MethodsThe Thai version of the FFI (FFI-Th) was adapted according to a forward and backward translation protocol by two independent translators and analyzed by a linguist and a committee. The FFI-Th was administered among 49 individuals with plantar foot complaints to determine internal consistency, reliability, and validity. Cronbach's alpha and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC3,1) were used to test the internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The Principal Component Analysis with varimax rotation method was used to test the factor structure and construct validity. Furthermore, the criterion validity was tested using Pearson's correlation coefficient (rp) between the FFI-Th and the visual analogue pain scale (pain-VAS) as well as the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L).ResultsThe FFI-Th showed good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability in the total score, pain, disability, and activity limitation subscales. The Principal Component Analysis produced 4 principal factors from the FFI-Th items. Criterion validity of the FFI-Th total score showed moderate to strong correlations with pain-VAS and EQ-5D-5L, and EQ-VAS scores.ConclusionThe FFI-Th was a reliable and valid questionnaire to assess the foot function in a Thai population.Trial registrationNCT03161314 (08/05/2017).

Project description:BACKGROUND:The original version of Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment-Patella Questionnaire (VISA-P) is developed in English, and aimed to assess the severity of patellar tendinopathy symptoms. Before used in China, it should be translated to Chinese version. OBJECTIVES:Our aim is to make a translation/cross-culturally adaption for the VISA-P into simplified Chinese version (VISA-PC). And primarily validate the VISA-PC in Chinese speaking population. METHODS:The translation process of VISA-P questionnaire into simplified Chinese version (VISP-PC) followed the International recognized guideline. Cross-cultural adaptation was carried out with a clinical measurement study. A total of 128 projects which consisted 33 healthy students, 39 patients with patellar tendinopathy and 56 military students (receive military training as at-risk population) were included into this study. Internal consistency was evaluated with Cronbach's alpha, and test-retest reliability was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Construct validity and floor and ceiling effects were also tested. RESULTS:The scores were 95.84?±?5.97 of healthy group, 91.87?±?9.03 of at-risk group, 62.49?±?11.39 of pathological group. There is no ceiling and floor effect of VISA-PC. The Cronbach's alpha (0.895) and ICC (0.986) values showed good internal consistency and reliability. There were high correlations between VISA-PC and Kujala patellofemoral score (r?=?0.721). VISA-PC score also had good correlation with the relevant SF-36 items. CONCLUSION:The VISA-PC was well translated into simplified Chinese version (VISA-PC), which is reliable and valid for Chinese-speaking patients with patellar tendinopathy. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:II.

Project description:BackgroundThe Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire (PGQ) is the only specific instrument designed to evaluate pain and activity limitations in pregnant or postpartum women with pelvic girdle pain (PGP). This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the PGQ for Chinese patients and to verify the validation of the psychometric items of the PGQ in the Chinese population.MethodsFirst, the translation and cultural adaptation process of the PGQ was conducted on the basis of international guidelines. Eighteen women suffering from PGP (11 pregnant women and 7 postpartum women) were enrolled in the pilot tests. Second, a total of 130 pregnant and postpartum women with PGP were enrolled to evaluate the validation of the psychometric items of the Chinese version.ResultsThe calculated Cronbach's alphas demonstrated a high level of internal consistency for the Chinese version of the PGQ, ranging from 0.77 to 0.93. The convergent validity showed a high positive correlation between the PGQ total score and the Oswestry Disability Index (0.84) and Numeric Rating Scale (0.73) for pain intensity. Furthermore, a good discriminatory ability was found for the Chinese version of the PGQ for distinguishing women who needed treatment from those not (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.843, p < 0.001), but not for discriminating the pregnant and postpartum states (AUC = 0.488, p = 0.824). The results of test-retest showed good reproducibility for the total PGQ (ICC = 0.93), the PGQ activity subscale (ICC = 0.92), and the PGQ symptom subscale (ICC = 0.77).ConclusionOur study presents the translation, validation and psychometric features of the Chinese version of the PGQ, showing good construct validity and discriminative power for assessing the consequences of PGP among pregnant or postpartum Chinese women.

Project description:Background: A short version of the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) comprising only re-experiencing symptom items has been recently validated on Japanese adults. This short-version-PDS had good psychometric properties among Japanese adults with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to translate and culturally validate the short-version-PDS for the Brazilian sociolinguistic context. Methods: A translation of the short-version-PDS was performed based on established guidelines. We enrolled 53 patients with PTSD as a potential comorbidity. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the short-version-PDS included forward and back-translation by a Japanese Brazilian researcher and a certified translator; synthesis was achieved by consensus, backward translation, pilot test, and finalization. Content validity coefficient (CVC) was used to assess quality of adaptation. Internal consistency was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Spearman correlations were between the new short-version-PDS and the Brazilian version of the posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the best cut-off values for the short-version-PDS. Results: The short-version-PDS was well accepted by all subjects, none of the questions were experienced as inappropriate, and all questions of the 3 items were judged important. Item 1 presented CVCt = 0.92; item 2 had a CVCt = 0.87 and item 3 had a CVCt = 0.95. The internal consistency of the final version as measured by Cronbach's alpha was 0.78. The short-version-PDS scale correlated positively with the DSM-5 scale with a Spearman rho of 0.64 (95%CI [0.4-0.8], p < 0.001). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve value was 0.97 (95%CI [0.9-1.0], p < 0.001). The cut-off score for a maximum Youden Index of 0.8 to distinguish moderate from severe from slight PTSD was > 31.0 with sensitivity and specificity are 86.4 and 93.5%, respectively. Conclusions: This Brazilian Portuguese version of the short-version-PDS had good psychometric properties among Brazilian adults with and without PTSD. Transferability and generalizability of the cut-off scores should be further analyzed.

Project description:BackgroundThere are very few observational methods for analysis of biomechanical exposure available in Brazilian-Portuguese.ObjectiveThis study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and test the measurement properties of the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Strain Index (SI).MethodsThe cross-cultural adaptation and measurement properties test were established according to Beaton et al. and COSMIN guidelines, respectively. Several tasks that required static posture and/or repetitive motion of upper limbs were evaluated (n>100).ResultsThe intra-raters' reliability for the RULA ranged from poor to almost perfect (k: 0.00-0.93), and SI from poor to excellent (ICC2.1: 0.05-0.99). The inter-raters' reliability was very poor for RULA (k: -0.12 to 0.13) and ranged from very poor to moderate for SI (ICC2.1: 0.00-0.53). The agreement was good for RULA (75-100% intra-raters, and 42.24-100% inter-raters) and to SI (EPM: -1.03% to 1.97%; intra-raters, and -0.17% to 1.51% inter-raters). The internal consistency was appropriate for RULA (α=0.88), and low for SI (α=0.65). Moderate construct validity were observed between RULA and SI, in wrist/hand-wrist posture (rho: 0.61) and strength/intensity of exertion (rho: 0.39).ConclusionThe adapted versions of the RULA and SI presented semantic and cultural equivalence for the Brazilian Portuguese. The RULA and SI had reliability estimates ranged from very poor to almost perfect. The internal consistency for RULA was better than the SI. The correlation between methods was moderate only of muscle request/movement repetition. Previous training is mandatory to use of observations methods for biomechanical exposure assessment, although it does not guarantee good reproducibility of these measures.

Project description:BackgroundThe Exercise Adherence Rating Scale (EARS) is a commonly used outcome tool, which helps to identify the adherence rate of exercises and reasons for adherence and non-adherence. There is no evidence of the availability of any measurement tools to assess exercise adherence in the Nepalese context and cultural background. Therefore, we conducted a cross-cultural adaptation of the EARS into the Nepali language and investigated its reliability and validity.MethodsCross-cultural adaptation of the EARS was done based on Beaton guidelines. Psychometric properties were evaluated among 18 participants aged 18 years or older with pre-diabetes or confirmed diagnosis of any disease who were prescribed with home exercises by physiotherapists. Any disease that limited participants from doing exercise and individuals unwilling to participate were excluded. Reliability was evaluated through internal consistency, using Cronbach's alpha. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed to explore construct validity and confirm its unidimensionality. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was analyzed to identify cut-off score, sensitivity and specificity of the tool.ResultsThe Cronbach's alpha was 0.94 for EARS-adherence behavior. The EFA of 6-items adherence behavior revealed the presence of one factor with an eigenvalue exceeding one. The scree-plot suggested for extraction of only one factor with strong loading (75.84%). The Area Under the Curve was 0.91 with 95% confidence interval 0.77-1.00 at p = 0.004. The cutoff score was found 17.5 with 89% sensitivity and 78% specificity.ConclusionsThe EARS was cross-culturally adapted to the Nepali language. The reliability and construct validity of the Nepali version of the EARS were acceptable to assess exercise adherence in Nepali-speaking individuals. This validated tool might facilitate the evaluation of exercise-related interventions. Future studies could investigate other psychometric properties of the Nepali EARS.

Project description:Aim:The purpose of this study was to produce a modified Greek translation of the CS and to test this version in terms of reliability and validity. Materials and methods:Translation of the modified Constant score testing protocol was done according to established international guidelines. Sixty-three patients with shoulder pain caused by degenerative or inflammatory disorders completed the Greek version of CS along with the Greek versions of SF-12 and Quick Dash Scores and the ASES Rating Scale and were included into the validation process. To assess test-retest reliability, 58 individuals completed the subjective part of the test again after 24-36 hours, while abstaining from all forms of treatment; internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha (?); reliability was assessed with test-retest procedure and the use of Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), whereas the validity of the reference questionnaire was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient in relation to control questionnaires. Results:There were no major problems during the forward-backward translation of the CS into Greek. The internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha 0.92) while the test-retest reliability for the overall questionnaire was also high (intra-class coefficient 0.95). Construct validity was confirmed with high values of Pearson's correlation between CS and Q-DASH (0.84), SF-12 (0.80) and ASES score (0.86) in respect. Conclusion:A translation and cultural adaptation of CS into Greek was successfully contacted. The Greek version of the modified Constant Score can be a useful modality in the evaluation of shoulder disorders among Greek patients and doctors.

Project description:Background:The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic shoulder and elbow score (KJOC score) was developed for assessing performance and function in overhead athletes with shoulder and elbow injury and recently adapted as the standard score for overhead athletes in Major League Baseball. However, the Korean version of the KJOC score was not developed in the literature. The aim of the current study was to adapt the English version of the KJOC score to develop a Korean version (K-KJOC) and to evaluate its validity and reliability. Methods:A total of 52 professional baseball players in the Korean Baseball League completed the K-KJOC at two-week intervals during the off-season. The QuickDASH (11-point Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) score was also performed to evaluate the construct validity of the K-KJOC score. The internal consistency of reliability and test-retest reliability were assessed as well. Results:The K-KJOC score was correlated with the Quick DASH - disability/symptom (-0.309, ~-0.268, p?<?0.05), Quick DASH - work (r?=?-0.721?to?-0.671, p?=?0.000) and QuickDASH - sports (r?=?-0.721?to?-0.714, p?=?0.000). The internal consistency of the K-KJOC score was excellent (Cronbach's ?: 0.917-0.966), and the intra-class correlation coefficients of test-retest reliability for the 10 items for the K-KJOC score were fair to excellent (ICC 0.505-0.937, p?<?0.05). Conclusion:The K-KJOC score appeared to be a valid and reliable tool for assessing shoulder and elbow injuries in Korean overhead athletes.
