To improve signal stability and quantitation, an optically stable, novel class of fluorophore for hybridization analysis of human metaphase chromosomes is demonstrated. Detection of hybridization sites in situ was based on fluorescence from streptavidin-linked inorganic crystals of cadmium selenide [(CdSe)ZnS].
