Global cycling of environmental manganese requires catalysis by bacteria and fungi for MnO(2) formation, since abiotic Mn(II) oxidation is slow under ambient conditions. Genetic evidence from several bacteria indicates that multicopper oxidases (MCOs) are required for MnO(2) formation.
