ABSTRACT: Transfer news: the use of a simple method allows the various sensitization steps in Eu(III) -containing complexes to be deciphered. Incorporation of an increasing number of electron-withdrawing fluorine atoms on the rigid and electronically tunable phenyl spacer between two tridentate binding units (see picture, red O, dark blue N) affects the quantum yield, intersystem crossing, and energy-transfer processes in a rational way.

Optimizing sensitization processes in dinuclear luminescent lanthanide oligomers: selection of rigid aromatic spacers.

Project description:This work illustrates a simple approach for optimizing the lanthanide luminescence in molecular dinuclear lanthanide complexes and identifies a particular multidentate europium complex as the best candidate for further incorporation into polymeric materials. The central phenyl ring in the bis-tridentate model ligands L3–L5, which are substituted with neutral (X = H, L3), electron-withdrawing (X = F, L4), or electron-donating (X = OCH3, L5) groups, separates the 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units of linear oligomeric multi-tridentate ligand strands that are designed for the complexation of luminescent trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III). Reactions of L3–L5 with [Ln(hfac)3(diglyme)] (hfac– is the hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion) produce saturated single-stranded dumbbell-shaped complexes [Ln2(Lk)(hfac)6] (k = 3–5), in which the lanthanide ions of the two nine-coordinate neutral [N3Ln(hfac)3] units are separated by 12–14 Å. The thermodynamic affinities of [Ln(hfac)3] for the tridentate binding sites in L3–L5 are average (6.6 ? log(?(2,1)(Y,Lk)) ? 8.4) but still result in 15–30% dissociation at millimolar concentrations in acetonitrile. In addition to the empirical solubility trend found in organic solvents (L4 > L3 >> L5), which suggests that the 1,4-difluorophenyl spacer in L4 is preferable, we have developed a novel tool for deciphering the photophysical sensitization processes operating in [Eu2(Lk)(hfac)6]. A simple interpretation of the complete set of rate constants characterizing the energy migration mechanisms provides straightforward objective criteria for the selection of [Eu2(L4)(hfac)6] as the most promising building block.

Artificial Metalloproteins with Dinuclear Iron-Hydroxido Centers.

Project description:Dinuclear iron centers with a bridging hydroxido or oxido ligand form active sites within a variety of metalloproteins. A key feature of these sites is the ability of the protein to control the structures around the Fe centers, which leads to entatic states that are essential for function. To simulate this controlled environment, artificial proteins have been engineered using biotin-streptavidin (Sav) technology in which Fe complexes from adjacent subunits can assemble to form [FeIII-(μ-OH)-FeIII] cores. The assembly process is promoted by the site-specific localization of the Fe complexes within a subunit through the designed mutation of a tyrosinate side chain to coordinate the Fe centers. An important outcome is that the Sav host can regulate the Fe···Fe separation, which is known to be important for function in natural metalloproteins. Spectroscopic and structural studies from X-ray diffraction methods revealed uncommonly long Fe···Fe separations that change by less than 0.3 Å upon the binding of additional bridging ligands. The structural constraints imposed by the protein host on the di-Fe cores are unique and create examples of active sites having entatic states within engineered artificial metalloproteins.

Recent Progress of Layered Perovskite Solar Cells Incorporating Aromatic Spacers.

Project description:Layered two dimensional (2D) or quasi-2D perovskites are emerging photovoltaic materials due to their superior environment and structure stability in comparison with their 3D counterparts. The typical 2D perovskites can be obtained by cutting 3D perovskites along < 100 > orientation by incorporation of bulky organic spacers, which play a key role in the performance of 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Compared with aliphatic spacers, aromatic spacers with high dielectric constant have the potential to decrease the dielectric and quantum confinement effect of 2D perovskites, promote efficient charge transport and reduce the exciton binding energy, all of which are beneficial for the photovoltaic performance of 2D PSCs. In this review, we aim to provide useful guidelines for the design of aromatic spacers for 2D perovskites. We systematically reviewed the recent progress of aromatic spacers used in 2D PSCs. Finally, we propose the possible design strategies for aromatic spacers that may lead to more efficient and stable 2D PSCs.

Preparation and structures of dinuclear complexes containing M(II)-OH centers.

Project description:The synthesis of M(II)(2) complexes (M(II)=Co, Mn) with terminal hydroxo ligands has been achieved utilizing a dinucleating ligand containing a bridging pyrazolate unit and appended (neopentyl)aminopyridyl groups. Structural studies on the complexes revealed that the M(II)-OH units are positioned in a syn-configuration, placing the hydroxo ligands in close proximity (ca. 3 Å apart), which may be a prerequisite for water oxidation.

Better together: building protein oligomers naturally and by design.

Project description:Protein oligomers are more common in nature than monomers, with dimers being the most prevalent final structural state observed in known structures. From a biological perspective, this makes sense as it conserves vital molecular resources that may be wasted simply by generating larger single polypeptide units, and allows new features such as cooperativity to emerge. Taking inspiration from nature, protein designers and engineers are now building artificial oligomeric complexes using a variety of approaches to generate new and useful supramolecular protein structures. Oligomerisation is thus offering a new approach to sample structure and function space not accessible through simply tinkering with monomeric proteins.

Dinuclear platinum complexes containing planar aromatic ligands to enhance stacking interactions with proteins.

Project description:In an approach to design drugs with higher affinity for π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions with targeted biomolecules, complexes of the type [{cis-Pt(A)2 (L)}2 -μ-{trans-1,4-dach}](NO3 )4 ((A)2 =(NH3 )2 or ethylenediamine (en), L=quinoline (quin) or benzothiazole (bztz), dach=trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexane) were synthesized. The quinoline complex, [{cis-Pt(en)(quin)}2 -μ-(dach)](NO3 )4 (9) was synthesized from the precursor K[PtCl3 (quin)] (1), while the benzothiazole complexes, [{cis-Pt(A)2 (bztz)}2 -μ-(dach)](NO3 )4 ((A)2 =(NH3 )2 (10) and (A)2 =en (11)) were synthesized from the precursors cis-[Pt(A)2 Cl(bztz)] ((A)2 =(NH3 )2 (7) and (A)2 =en (8)). Their interactions with N-acetyltryptophan and a model pentapeptide (N-Ac-WLDSW-OH), modeled on the pentapeptide recognition sequence (FSDLW) of p53-mdm2 interaction, were examined by fluorescence spectroscopy. The dinuclear complexes were found to be significantly stronger at quenching the fluorescence of tryptophan than their mononuclear Pt-based analogues indicating stronger binding. Molecular modeling suggests a "sandwich" mode of binding, and the flexibility of the dinuclear motif can allow the design of more selective and stronger-binding complexes. Based on these results a further prototype, [{Pt(en)(9-EtGua)}2 μ-H2 N(CH2 )6 NH2 ](4+) , incorporating the purine 9-ethylguanine (9-EtG) as a stacking moiety, was prepared which showed good cytotoxicity in A2780 and OsACL tumor cell lines.

Synthesis, Structure, Surface and Antimicrobial Properties of New Oligomeric Quaternary Ammonium Salts with Aromatic Spacers.

Project description:New dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric quaternary ammonium salts were accomplished by reaction of tertiary alkyldimethyl amines with appropriate bromomethylbenzene derivatives. A series of new cationic surfactants contain different alkyl chain lengths (C4-C18), aromatic spacers and different numbers of quaternary nitrogen atoms. The structure of the products was confirmed by spectral analysis (FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR and 2D-NMR), mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), elemental analysis, as well as PM5 semiempirical methods. Compound (21) was also analyzed using X-ray crystallography. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1,4-bis-[N-(1-alkyl)-N,N-dimethylammoniummethyl]benzene dibromides (3-9) was determined to characterize the aggregation behavior. The antimicrobial properties of novel QACs (Quaternary Ammonium Salts) were examined to set their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against fungi Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Penicillium chrysogenum and bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Extended peptoids: a new class of oligomers based on aromatic building blocks.

Project description:Peptoids (N-substituted polyglycines) represent a class of bioinspired oligomers that have unique physical and structural properties. Here we report the construction of "extended peptoids" based on aromatic building blocks, in which the N-alkylaminoacetyl group of the peptoid backbone has been replaced by an N-alkylaminomethylbenzoyl spacer. Both meta- and para-bromomethylbenzoic acids were synthesized, providing access to a new class of peptoids. Further, inclusion of hydrophilic side chains confers water solubility to these compounds, showing that, like simple peptoids, extended peptoids add an extra dimension to synthetic polyamide oligomers with potential application in a variety of biological contexts.
