Declining diversity in abandoned grasslands of the carpathian mountains: do dominant species matter?

ABSTRACT: Traditional haymaking has created exceptionally high levels of plant species diversity in semi-natural grasslands of the Carpathian Mountains (Romania), the maintenance of which is jeopardized by recent abandonment and subsequent vegetation succession. We tested the hypothesis that the different life history strategies of dominant grasses cause different patterns of diversity loss after abandonment of traditional haymaking in two types of meadow. Although diversity loss rate was not significantly different, the mechanism of loss depended on the life history of dominant species. In meadows co-dominated by competitive stress-tolerant ruderals, diversity loss occurred following the suppression of dominant grasses by tall forbs, whereas in meadows dominated by a stress-tolerant competitor, diversity loss resulted from increased abundance and biomass of the dominant grass. We conclude that management for species conservation in abandoned grasslands should manipulate the functional turnover in communities where the dominant species is a weaker competitor, and abundance and biomass of dominant species in communities where the dominant species is the stronger competitor.

Project description:Background and aimsThe positive effects of species diversity on the functioning and production of ecosystems have been discussed widely in the literature. In agriculture, these effects are increasingly being applied to mixed-species crops and particularly to temporary grasslands. However, the effects of increases in genetic diversity (i.e. within-species diversity) on productivity in multispecies crops have not been much studied. Nevertheless, genetic diversity may have strong positive effects on agricultural ecosystems and positively influence production and species abundances in multispecies covers. We examine here the effects of genetic diversity on temporary multispecies grasslands.MethodsFrom a real situation, a breeder's field trial, we describe a study with five seed mixtures, each containing seven species (three grasses and four legumes) but with three different levels of genetic diversity (low, medium and high) created by using different numbers of cultivars per species. From the perspective of a plant breeder, we analyse measurements of biomass production over a 5-year period.Key resultsWe show a positive effect of genetic diversity on production, on production stability and on the equilibrium of species abundances in the mixtures over the 5-year period of the experiment. The legume/grass proportions were best balanced, having the highest within-species diversity.ConclusionsFor the first time in a field-plot study, we demonstrate the major role played by within-species genetic diversity on the production, stability and species composition of temporary grasslands. Our key results seem to find their explanation in terms of shifts in the peaks of species biomass production during the season, these shifts likely leading to temporal species complementarity. Our study suggests major benefits will arise with increases in the genetic diversity of multispecies crops. Genetic diversity may be useful in helping to meet new crop-diversification challenges, particularly with multispecies grasslands. Genetic and species diversity will likely provide additional levers for improving crops in diversified systems.

Project description:Background and Aims:Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and natural fire regime suppression are key drivers of vegetation change in urbanizing grasslands. Some species thrive under these conditions, while others face local extinction. In the natural grasslands that surround Melbourne, Australia, biotic homogenization has occurred with intensifying urbanization. Some native species have become rarer (decreaser species) across the landscape, while others have become more widespread (increaser species). This study experimentally examined the response of increaser and decreaser plant species to nitrogen addition/depletion, and examined the presence/absence of annual disturbance to the vegetation. Methods:Decreaser and increaser species were planted into 60 field plots established in an urban Melbourne grassland and examined over 2 years. Annual removal of above-ground biomass occurred in half the plots to simulate biomass removal via fire, with the remaining plots undisturbed. Soil nitrogen was depleted in one-third of plots, one-third received no nitrogen treatment and one-third were fertilized with nitrogen. Increaser plant species were predicted to persist in the absence of disturbance, and thrive when fertilized. In contrast, high mortality was predicted for decreaser species in the absence of disturbance, with fertilization providing no advantage. Key Results:Seedling mortality for increaser and decreaser species was unrelated to the treatments. The mortality of decreaser species was high (69 %), and the mortality of increaser species low (20 %). However, seedling growth was related to the treatments. The total biomass of decreaser species was highest in annually disturbed plots, with growth suppressed in undisturbed plots. In contrast, the total biomass of increaser species was unrelated to the disturbance regime, but responded positively to nitrogen enrichment. Conclusions:The results provide evidence that by affecting plant growth, declines in biomass removal and atmospheric nitrogen deposition could be key drivers of biotic homogenization in urban grasslands.

Project description:Positive plant diversity-productivity relationships are known to be driven by complementary resource use via differences in plant functional traits. Moreover, soil properties related to nutrient availability were shown to change with plant diversity over time; however, it is not well-understood whether and how such plant diversity-dependent soil changes and associated changes in functional traits contribute to positive diversity-productivity relationships in the long run. To test this, we investigated plant communities of different species richness (1, 2, 6, and 9 species) in a 15-year-old grassland biodiversity experiment. We determined community biomass production and biodiversity effects (net biodiversity [NEs], complementarity [CEs], and selection effects [SEs]), as well as community means of plant functional traits and soil properties. First, we tested how these variables changed along the plant diversity gradient and were related to each other. Then, we tested for direct and indirect effects of plant and soil variables influencing community biomass production and biodiversity effects. Community biomass production, NEs, CEs, SEs, plant height, root length density (RLD), and all soil property variables changed with plant diversity and the presence of the dominant grass species Arrhenatherum elatius (increase except for soil pH, which decreased). Plant height and RLD for plant functional traits, and soil pH and organic carbon concentration for soil properties, were the variables with the strongest influence on biomass production and biodiversity effects. Our results suggest that plant species richness and the presence of the dominant species, A. elatius, cause soil organic carbon to increase and soil pH to decrease over time, which increases nutrient availability favoring species with tall growth and dense root systems, resulting in higher biomass production in species-rich communities. Here, we present an additional process that contributes to the strengthening positive diversity-productivity relationship, which may play a role alongside the widespread plant functional trait-based explanation.
