Mood and the market: can press reports of investors' mood predict stock prices?

ABSTRACT: We examined whether press reports on the collective mood of investors can predict changes in stock prices. We collected data on the use of emotion words in newspaper reports on traders' affect, coded these emotion words according to their location on an affective circumplex in terms of pleasantness and activation level, and created indices of collective mood for each trading day. Then, by using time series analyses, we examined whether these mood indices, depicting investors' emotion on a given trading day, could predict the next day's opening price of the stock market. The strongest findings showed that activated pleasant mood predicted increases in NASDAQ prices, while activated unpleasant mood predicted decreases in NASDAQ prices. We conclude that both valence and activation levels of collective mood are important in predicting trend continuation in stock prices.

Quantifying the effect of investors' attention on stock market.

Project description:The investors' attention has been extensively used to predict the stock market. Different from existing proxies of the investors' attention, such as the Google trends, Baidu index (BI), we argue the collective attention from the stock trading platforms could reflect the investors' attention more closely. By calculated the increments of the attention volume for each stock (IAVS) from the stock trading platforms, we investigate the effect of investors' attention measured by the IAVS on the movement of the stock market. The experimental results for Chinese Securities Index 100 (CSI100) show that the BI is significantly correlated with the returns of CSI100 at 1% significance level only in 2014. However, it should be emphasized that the correlation of the new proposed measure, namely IAVS, is significantly at 1% significance level in 2014 and 2015. It shows that the effect of the measure IAVS on the movement of the stock market is more stable and significant than BI. This study yields important invest implications and better understanding of collective investors' attention.

Web search queries can predict stock market volumes.

Project description:We live in a computerized and networked society where many of our actions leave a digital trace and affect other people's actions. This has lead to the emergence of a new data-driven research field: mathematical methods of computer science, statistical physics and sociometry provide insights on a wide range of disciplines ranging from social science to human mobility. A recent important discovery is that search engine traffic (i.e., the number of requests submitted by users to search engines on the www) can be used to track and, in some cases, to anticipate the dynamics of social phenomena. Successful examples include unemployment levels, car and home sales, and epidemics spreading. Few recent works applied this approach to stock prices and market sentiment. However, it remains unclear if trends in financial markets can be anticipated by the collective wisdom of on-line users on the web. Here we show that daily trading volumes of stocks traded in NASDAQ-100 are correlated with daily volumes of queries related to the same stocks. In particular, query volumes anticipate in many cases peaks of trading by one day or more. Our analysis is carried out on a unique dataset of queries, submitted to an important web search engine, which enable us to investigate also the user behavior. We show that the query volume dynamics emerges from the collective but seemingly uncoordinated activity of many users. These findings contribute to the debate on the identification of early warnings of financial systemic risk, based on the activity of users of the www.

Does retail investors beat institutional investors?--Explanation of game stop's stock price anomalies.

Project description:This paper studies the relation of information cost, retail investor sentiment and asset pricing. Our motivation to study this model is to learn why retail investors could move asset price away from fundamental values. In the model, the institutional investors are pessimistic and the retail investors are optimistic, the ratio of the expected utility of informed and rational but uninformed institutional investors increases first and then decreases as the cost of information increases. In addition, a large number of retail investors promoted substantial increases in stock prices. This model provides part of the explanation for the unusually high stock price of Game Stop in early 2021 that retail investors cliqued and confronted institutional investors.

An analysis of investors' behavior in Bitcoin market.

Project description:As an emerging digital asset, Bitcoin has been traded for more than a decade, reaching an impressively high market capitalization and continuing to expand its volume of trading at a rapid pace. Many countries have legalized or are considering legalizing a trading platform for this asset, and a set of companies worldwide accept it as a medium of exchange. As a result of this expansion, many studies in finance literature have focused on studying the efficiency of this cryptocurrency. In line with this literature, this paper investigates, using the abnormal returns and abnormal trading volumes methodologies, the dynamics of investors' reaction to the arrival of unexpected favorable and unfavorable information regarding the Bitcoin market in the context of the three famous hypotheses: the overreaction, the uncertain information, and the efficient market hypotheses. Overall, we find evidence confirming that the Bitcoin market tends to mature over time. More precisely, over the entire analyzed period, investors behave in accordance with the predictions of the uncertain information hypothesis when positive and negative events occur. However, splitting the timespan into sub-periods provides interesting insights. Remarkably in this respect is the fact that starting with the second sub-period, the response of investors in the Bitcoin market supports, in a moderate manner, the postulate of the efficient market hypothesis when favorable events are addressed. Moreover, our findings reveal that during the pandemic period, the efficiency of Bitcoin has increased, thus turning this stressful period into an advantage for this cryptocurrency. This improved market efficiency is also supported by the abnormal trading volume analysis.

Hospital resource allocation decisions when market prices exceed Medicare prices.

Project description:ObjectiveTo examine nonprofit hospitals' financial and spending allocations when the private sector payment rate is higher than the Medicare's payment rate.Data sourcesHospital financial data for 2014-2018 from Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Cost Reports, hospital characteristics from the American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey.Study designHospital and year level fixed effects regressions modeling each hospital's (1) operating net income per discharge equivalent (DE); (2) administrative cost per DE; (3) patient care cost per DE; (4) registered nurse per bed; charity care cost per DE; and (5) provision of unprofitable services as a function of the private sector to Medicare payment ratio (PMR).Data collection/extraction methodsHospital/year-level data from hospital cost reports merged with AHA data. Samples included general short-term hospitals with nonprofit ownership, excluding critical access hospitals.Principal findingsThe final sample included a total of 8862 hospital-year observations, with a mean PMR of 1.62. Nonprofit hospitals having a 0.1 higher PMR were associated with $257 (95% CI: $181-$334) increase in operating net income per DE; $66 (95% CI: $32-$99) increase in administrative cost per DE; $170 (95% CI: $120-$220) increase in patient care cost per DE; and $18 (95% CI: $10-$25) increase in charity care cost per DE. We found hospitals hired 0.86 (95% CI: -0.08 to 1.81) more registered nurses per 100 beds, but no evidence on providing more beds for unprofitable services, such as obstetric care, burn care, alcohol/drug abuse treatment, or psychiatric care.ConclusionsHigher private sector prices led primarily to greater surplus and administrative cost for nonprofit hospitals and smaller increases in spending on services that will directly benefit patients.

Predictability of machine learning techniques to forecast the trends of market index prices: Hypothesis testing for the Korean stock markets.

Project description:The prediction of the trends of stocks and index prices is one of the important issues to market participants. Investors have set trading or fiscal strategies based on the trends, and considerable research in various academic fields has been studied to forecast financial markets. This study predicts the trends of the Korea Composite Stock Price Index 200 (KOSPI 200) prices using nonparametric machine learning models: artificial neural network, support vector machines with polynomial and radial basis function kernels. In addition, this study states controversial issues and tests hypotheses about the issues. Accordingly, our results are inconsistent with those of the precedent research, which are generally considered to have high prediction performance. Moreover, Google Trends proved that they are not effective factors in predicting the KOSPI 200 index prices in our frameworks. Furthermore, the ensemble methods did not improve the accuracy of the prediction.

GCN-based stock relations analysis for stock market prediction.

Project description:Most stock price predictive models merely rely on the target stock's historical information to forecast future prices, where the linkage effects between stocks are neglected. However, a group of prior studies has shown that the leverage of correlations between stocks could significantly improve the predictions. This article proposes a unified time-series relational multi-factor model (TRMF), which composes a self-generating relations (SGR) algorithm that can extract relational features automatically. In addition, the TRMF model integrates stock relations with other multiple dimensional features for the price prediction compared to extant works. Experimental validations are performed on the NYSE and NASDAQ data, where the model is compared with the popular methods such as attention Long Short-Term Memory network (Attn-LSTM), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and multi-factor framework (MF). Results show that compared with these extant methods, our model has a higher expected cumulative return rate and a lower risk of return volatility.

Collective dynamics of stock market efficiency.

Project description:Summarized by the efficient market hypothesis, the idea that stock prices fully reflect all available information is always confronted with the behavior of real-world markets. While there is plenty of evidence indicating and quantifying the efficiency of stock markets, most studies assume this efficiency to be constant over time so that its dynamical and collective aspects remain poorly understood. Here we define the time-varying efficiency of stock markets by calculating the permutation entropy within sliding time-windows of log-returns of stock market indices. We show that major world stock markets can be hierarchically classified into several groups that display similar long-term efficiency profiles. However, we also show that efficiency ranks and clusters of markets with similar trends are only stable for a few months at a time. We thus propose a network representation of stock markets that aggregates their short-term efficiency patterns into a global and coherent picture. We find this financial network to be strongly entangled while also having a modular structure that consists of two distinct groups of stock markets. Our results suggest that stock market efficiency is a collective phenomenon that can drive its operation at a high level of informational efficiency, but also places the entire system under risk of failure.

Study on the linkage between macro policy and market effectiveness in China’s stock market: Based on run test of China’s stock market index

Project description:The macro policy of the stock market is an important market information. The implementation goal of the macro policy of the stock market is mainly to improve the effectiveness of the stock market. However, whether this effectiveness has achieved the goal is worth verifying through empirical data. The exertion of this information utility is closely related to the effectiveness of the stock market. Use the run test method in statistics to collect and sort out the daily data of stock price index in recent 30 years, the linkage between 75 macro policy events and 35 trading days of market efficiencies before and after the macro event are tested since 1992 to 2022. The results show that 50.66% of the macro policies are positively linked to the effectiveness of the stock market, while 49.34% of the macro policies have reduced the effectiveness of the market operation. This shows that the effectiveness of China’s stock market is not high, and the nonlinear characteristics are obvious, so the policy formulation of the stock market needs further improvement.

Brazilian stock market bubble in the 2010s.

Project description:Brazilian stock markets underwent a period of remarkable exuberance between early 2016 and March 2020, only to crash with the global turmoil related to health worries and oil prices. The Ibovespa index tripled its market value between a low point in January 2016 and its maximum in January 2020-by March 12, half those gains had been erased. Narratives about a bubble in Brazilian stocks before the global crash and its subsequent burst are plentiful in specialized media. In this paper, we explore this narrative from within the framework of strict local martingale financial bubbles. A key result in this literature states some financial asset price displays a bubble only if it follows a strict local martingale under the equivalent risk-neutral measure. A diffusion process is a strict local martingale if its volatility increases faster than linearly as its level grows. We first apply a nonparametric method to estimate the volatility function of Ibovespa daily prices, then fit a stochastic volatility model whose parameter values can discriminate the underlying price process as either a true martingale or a strict local martingale. Our results are negative towards the presence of a strict local martingale bubble in the Ibovespa index. Strict local martingale bubbles are related to a positive relationship between returns and volatility which does not seem present in the data at hand. We also performed a comparative analysis of the patterns found for the Ibovespa with the S&P500 index, spot Brent oil and gold prices.
