One-pot synthesis of surface roughness controlled hollow silica spheres with enhanced drug loading and release profile under ambient conditions in aqueous solutions.

ABSTRACT: A green one-pot approach is used to synthesize surface morphology controlled hollow silica spheres in aqueous solution under ambient conditions. Using cationic polystyrene particles as a template and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as a structural directing agent, the surface roughness and wall thickness could be easily controlled by varying the concentration of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Smooth surface of hollow silica spheres with different wall thickness was obtained using anionic polystyrene particles. The resulted hollow silica spheres with rough surface had better performance in carrying and releasing a model drug.

Framework confinement of multi-metals within silica hollow spheres by one-pot synthesis process.

Project description:The control incorporation of metals in silica hollow spheres (SHSs) may bring new functions to silica mesoporous structures for applications including catalysis, sensing, molecular delivery, adsorption filtration, and storage. However, the strategies for incorporating metals, whether through pre-loading in the hollow interior or post-encapsulation in the mesoporous shell, still face challenges in achieving quantitative doping of various metals and preventing metal aggregation or channel blockage during usage. In this study, we explored the doping of different metals into silica hollow spheres based on the dissolution-regrowth process of silica. The process may promote the formation of more structural defects and functional silanol groups, which could facilitate the fixation of metals in the silica networks. With this simple and efficient approach, we successfully achieved the integration of ten diverse metal species into silica hollow sphere (SHS). Various single-metal, dual-metal, triple-metal, and quadruple-metal doped SHSs have been prepared, with the doped metals being stable and homogeneously dispersed in the structure. Based on the structural characterizations, we analyzed the influence of metal types on the morphology features of SHSs. The synergistic effects of multi-metals on the catalysis applications were also studied and compared.

Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Hollow Spheres for Nano-Bioreactor Application.

Project description:Mesoporous silica materials have attracted great research interest for various applications ranging from (bio)catalysis and sensing to drug delivery. It remains challenging to prepare hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN) with large center-radial mesopores that could provide a more efficient transport channel through the cell for guest molecules. Here, we propose a novel strategy for the preparation of HMSN with large dendritic mesopores to achieve higher enzyme loading capacity and more efficient bioreactors. The materials were prepared by combining barium sulfate nanoparticles (BaSO4 NP) as a hard template and the in situ-formed 3-aminophenol/formaldehyde resin as a porogen for directing the dendritic mesopores' formation. HMSNs with different particle sizes, shell thicknesses, and pore structures have been prepared by choosing BaSO4 NP of various sizes and adjusting the amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate added in synthesis. The obtained HMSN-1.1 possesses a high pore volume (1.07 cm3 g-1), a large average pore size (10.9 nm), and dendritic mesopores that penetrated through the shell. The advantages of HMSNs are also demonstrated for enzyme (catalase) immobilization and subsequent use of catalase-loaded HMSNs as bioreactors for catalyzing the H2O2 degradation reaction. The hollow and dendritic mesoporous shell features of HMSNs provide abundant tunnels for molecular transport and more accessible surfaces for molecular adsorption, showing great promise in developing efficient nanoreactors and drug delivery vehicles.

Robust Amino-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Hollow Spheres Templated by CO2 Bubbles.

Project description:Hollow-structured mesoporous silica has wide applications in catalysis and drug delivery due to its high surface area, large hollow space, and short diffusion mesochannels. However, the synthesis of hollow structures usually requires sacrificial templates, leading to increased production costs and environmental problems. Here, for the first time, amino-functionalized mesoporous silica hollow spheres were synthesized by using CO2 gaseous bubbles as templates. The assembly of anionic surfactants, co-structure directing agents, and inorganic silica precursors around CO2 bubbles formed the mesoporous silica shells. The hollow silica spheres, 200-400 nm in size with 20-30 nm spherical shell thickness, had abundant amine groups on the surface of the mesopores, indicating excellent applications for CO2 capture, Knoevenagel condensation reaction, and the controlled release of Drugs.

Ultrafast Synthesis of Multifunctional Submicrometer Hollow Silica Spheres in Microfluidic Spiral Channels.

Project description:We demonstrate a facile and ultrafast approach for the synthesis of multifunctional submicrometer hollow silica spheres (smHSSs) using microfluidic spiral channels with enhanced mixing performance, introduced by the transverse Dean flows cross the channel as a result of centrifugal effects. Formation of smHSSs is initiated by the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) at the interface of two laminar reactant flows. Complete mixing of the flows further facilitates the subsequent condensation of hydrolyzed TEOS, which builds up the shell layer of smHSSs. The average size of the as-synthesized smHSSs is 804.7?nm, and the thickness of the shell layer is ~20?nm. Multifunctional smHSSs integrated with proteins, fluorescent dyes, quantum dots, and magnetic nanoparticles can be further produced via this general platform. Their applications in cell imaging, organic dye adsorption, and drug delivery are examined.

Bottom-Up Assembly of DNA-Silica Nanocomposites into Micrometer-Sized Hollow Spheres.

Project description:Although DNA nanotechnology has developed into a highly innovative and lively field of research at the interface between chemistry, materials science, and biotechnology, there is still a great need for methodological approaches for bridging the size regime of DNA nanostructures with that of micrometer- and millimeter-sized units for practical applications. We report on novel hierarchically structured composite materials from silica nanoparticles and DNA polymers that can be obtained by self-assembly through the clamped hybridization chain reaction. The nanocomposite materials can be assembled into thin layers within microfluidically generated water-in-oil droplets to produce mechanically stabilized hollow spheres with uniform size distributions at high throughput rates. The fact that cells can be encapsulated in these microcontainers suggests that our concept not only contributes to the further development of supramolecular bottom-up manufacturing, but can also be exploited for applications in the life sciences.

Chemo-photothermal effects of doxorubicin/silica-carbon hollow spheres on liver cancer.

Project description:Chemo-photothermal therapy, which exhibits synergistic effects, is more effective than either of the treatments administered alone because of its superior ability to target and destroy cancer cells. An anti-cancer compound (doxorubicin, DOX) was embedded in silica-carbon hollow spheres (SCHSs) using heat and vacuum to integrate multi-therapeutic effects onto one platform and subsequently improve the anti-cancer efficacy. SCHSs were synthesized via a surface activation method and its highly porous surface enhanced the loading content of the desired drug. SCHSs are an infrared photothermal material that can destroy targeted cells by heating under near-infrared (NIR) laser illumination at 808 nm. NIR laser illumination also enhances DOX release from SCHSs to increase the anti-cancer efficiency of DOX-loaded SCHSs (DOX-SCHSs) in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional multicellular tumor spheroid cultures. SCHSs exhibited high heat-generating ability and pH-responsive drug delivery. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that DOX-SCHSs represent a potential tool for chemo-photothermal therapy due to its photothermal effects. Thus, our findings imply that the high cancer cell killing efficiency of DOX-SCHSs induced by NIR illumination can be used for the treatment of tumors.

Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes as Templates to Prepare Hollow Silica Spheres Encapsulating Metal Nanoparticles.

Project description:Integrating hollow silica spheres with metal nanoparticles to fabricate multifunctional hybrid materials has attracted increasing attention in catalysis, detection, and drug delivery. Here, we report a simple and general method to prepare hollow silica spheres encapsulating silver nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2) based on spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB), which consist of a polystyrene core and densely grafted poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) chains. SPB were firstly used as nanoreactors to generate silver nanoparticles in situ and then used as sacrificial templates to prepare hybrid hollow silica spheres. The resulted Ag@SiO2 composites exhibit high catalytic activity and good reusability for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by NaBH4. More importantly, this developed approach can be extended to the encapsulation of other metal nanoparticles such as gold nanoparticles into the hollow silica spheres. This work demonstrates that SPB are promising candidates for the preparation of hollow spheres with encapsulated metal nanoparticles and the resulted hybrid spheres show great potential applications in catalysis.

Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Spheres for High Performance Symmetrical and Aqueous Zinc-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitor.

Project description:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors are a promising energy storage device as they simultaneously combine the high capacity of batteries and the high power of supercapacitors. However, the practical application of Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors is hindered by insufficient energy density and poor rate performance. In this study, a symmetrical zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor device was constructed with hollow mesoporous-carbon nanospheres as electrode materials, and aqueous ZnSO4 adopted as an electrolyte. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and high specific area (800 m2/g) of the hollow carbon nanospheres, fast capacitor-type ion adsorption/de-adsorption on both the cathode and the anode can be achieved, as well as additional battery-type Zn/Zn2+ electroplating/stripping on the anode. This device thus demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance, with high capacity (212.1 F/g at 0.2 A/g), a high energy density (75.4 Wh/kg at 0.16 kW/kg), a good rate performance (34.2 Wh/kg energy density maintained at a high power density of 16.0 kW/kg) and excellent cycling stability with 99.4% capacitance retention after 2,500 cycles at 2 A/g. The engineering of this new configuration provides an extremely safe, high-rate, and durable energy-storage device.

Highly Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solutions by Polypyrrole/Monodisperse Latex Spheres.

Project description:Pyrrole (Py) is easily agglomerated during the polymerization process, affecting its performance. In this paper, polypyrrole/monodispersed latex sphere (PPy/MLS) composites were prepared using in-situ polymerization for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The specific surface area of PPy/MLS (39.30 m2/g) was increased relative to that of PPy (24.82 m2/g), thus providing more effective adsorption sites. In addition, the adsorption properties of Cr(VI) under different conditions, including Py content, pH of the aqueous solution, and PPy/MLS dosage, were investigated to reveal the adsorption mechanism. The results showed that PPy/MLS possessed high Cr(VI) adsorption capacities when the Py content was 50 wt %. The maximum adsorption capacity was 343.64 mg/g at pH 2.0 and 25 °C. Remarkably, the adsorbents exhibited an excellent removal rate of Cr(VI) after three cycles of adsorption-desorption (over 99%), suggesting that the adsorbents had exceptional recyclability. Furthermore, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The high adsorption performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency make this adsorbent a promising candidate for large-scale Cr(VI) contaminant removal.

Synthesis of CuO and Cu<sub>3</sub>N Nanoparticles in and on Hollow Silica Spheres.

Project description:Copper oxide nanoparticles within hollow mesoporous silica spheres were prepared by binding/adsorbing Cu2+ or [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+ ions on the surface of carbon spheres, followed by formation of a mesoporous silica shell by sol-gel processing and calcination in air. The CuO nanoparticles can subsequently be converted into Cu3N nanoparticles by nitridation with ammonia. The effect of the different copper precursors, i.e. Cu2+ and [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+, on the nanocomposites was studied. CuO nanoparticles on the outer surface of hollow silica spheres were obtained by thermal treatment of hollow CuSiO3 spheres in air. Nitridation of the CuSiO3 spheres with ammonia resulted in Cu3N@SiO2 composites, with aggregated Cu3N nanoparticles on hollow silica spheres.
