ComEC is a putative channel protein for DNA uptake in Bacillus subtilis and other genetically transformable bacteria. Membrane topology studies suggest a model of ComEC as a multispanning membrane protein with seven transmembrane segments (TMSs), and possibly with one laterally inserted amphipathic helix.
