Cell-mediated immunity critically depends on the localization of lymphocytes at sites of infection. While some memory T cells recirculate, a distinct lineage (resident memory T cells (T(RM) cells)) are embedded in nonlymphoid tissues (NLTs) and mediate potent protective immunity.
