Electrophilic C-H Borylation and Related Reactions of B-H Boron Cations.

ABSTRACT: Catalytic procedures are described for aminedirected borylation of aliphatic and aromatic tertiary amine boranes. Sequential double borylation is observed in cases where two or more C-H bonds are available that allow 5-center or 6-center intramolecular borylation. The HNTf2 catalyzed borylation of benzylamine boranes provides a practical means for the synthesis of ortho-substituted arylboronic acid derivatives, suitable for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling applications.

A modular route to boron doped PAHs by combining borylative cyclisation and electrophilic C-H borylation.

Project description:Heteroatom doping into polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a powerful approach for modifying key physical properties, however, there are extremely few modular routes that enable facile formation of B-, B2- and B,N-(specifically not containing direct B-N bonds) doped PAHs despite the growing importance of these materials. Sequential, one pot borylative cyclisation/intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation of naphthyl-alkynes provides a simple new route to access novel B-, B,N- and B2-doped (PAHs). The initial products, dihydronaphthalene/dihydroquinoline B-mesityl PAHs, were reacted with [Ph3C][BF4]/pyridyl base to form the oxidised B-, and B,N-doped PAHs. However, for B-triisopropylphenyl (Trip) PAH congeners oxidation has to be performed prior to Trip installation due to preferential oxidation of an isopropylaryl moiety to the styrene. This alternative sequence enables access to Trip-B-PAHs and to structurally constrained B and B2-PAHs. Analysis of the solid state structures and optoelectronic properties of these PAHs confirm that frontier orbital energies, extended packing structures, Stokes shift and quantum yields all can be rationally modified using this methodology. The simplicity of this synthetic approach makes it a powerful tool for rapidly generating novel bench stable boron doped PAHs, which is important for facilitating further structure-property relationship studies and the wider utilisation of these materials in optoelectronic applications.

Zinc catalysed electrophilic C-H borylation of heteroarenes.

Project description:Cationic zinc Lewis acids catalyse the C-H borylation of heteroarenes using pinacol borane (HBPin) or catechol borane (HBCat). An electrophile derived from [IDippZnEt][B(C6F5)4] (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) combined with N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMT) proved the most active in terms of C-H borylation scope and yield. Using this combination weakly activated heteroarenes, such as thiophene, were amenable to catalytic C-H borylation using HBCat. Competition reactions show these IDipp-zinc cations are highly oxophilic but less hydridophilic (relative to B(C6F5)3), and that borylation proceeds via activation of the hydroborane (and not the heteroarene) by a zinc electrophile. Based on DFT calculations this activation is proposed to proceed by coordination of a hydroborane oxygen to the zinc centre to generate a boron electrophile that effects C-H borylation. Thus, Lewis acid binding to oxygen sites of hydroboranes represents an under-developed route to access reactive borenium-type electrophiles for C-H borylation.

Crystalline boron-linked tetraaminoethylene radical cations.

Project description:Single-electron oxidation of neutral boryl-linked tetraaminoethylene derivatives 4 led to the formation of radical cations 4?+ , which have been isolated and fully characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis, EPR spectroscopy, and computational studies revealed that the unpaired electron is delocalized over the B2N4C2 skeleton and the spin density mainly resides on the carbon and boron atoms.

1,3,2,5-Diazadiborinine featuring nucleophilic and electrophilic boron centres.

Project description:The seminal discovery in 1865 by Kekulé that benzene nucleus exists with cyclic skeleton is considered to be the beginning of aromatic chemistry. Since then, a myriad of cyclic molecules displaying aromatic property have been synthesized. Meanwhile, borazine (B3N3H6), despite the isostructural and isoelectronic relationships with benzene, exhibits little aromaticity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine (B2C2N2R6) derivative, a hybrid inorganic/organic benzene, and we present experimental and computational evidence for its aromaticity. In marked contrast to the reactivity of benzene, borazine, and even azaborinines previously reported, 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine readily forms the adducts with methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and phenylacetylene without any catalysts. Moreover, 1,3,2,5-diazadiborine activates carbon dioxide giving rise to a bicycle[2,2,2] product, and the binding process was found to be reversible. These results, thus, demonstrate that 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine features both nucleophilic and electrophilic boron centres, with a formal B(+I)/B(+III) mixed valence system, in the aromatic six-membered B2C2N2 ring.

Using Ylide Functionalization to Stabilize Boron Cations.

Project description:The metalated ylide YNa [Y=(Ph3 PCSO2 Tol)- ] was employed as X,L-donor ligand for the preparation of a series of boron cations. Treatment of the bis-ylide functionalized borane Y2 BH with different trityl salts or B(C6 F5 )3 for hydride abstraction readily results in the formation of the bis-ylide functionalized boron cation [Y-B-Y]+ (2). The high donor capacity of the ylide ligands allowed the isolation of the cationic species and its characterization in solution as well as in solid state. DFT calculations demonstrate that the cation is efficiently stabilized through electrostatic effects as well as ?-donation from the ylide ligands, which results in its high stability. Despite the high stability of 2 [Y-B-Y]+ serves as viable source for the preparation of further borenium cations of type Y2 B+ ?LB by addition of Lewis bases such as amines and amides. Primary and secondary amines react to tris(amino)boranes via N-H activation across the B-C bond.

Regioselective electrophilic aromatic borylation as a method for synthesising sterically hindered benzothiadiazole fluorophores.

Project description:Regioselective stepwise phenylation of 4,7-diarylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole fluorophores has been achieved through a facile one-pot, three-step synthetic strategy involving sequential borylation, hydroxydechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Crucial to the selectivity was the use of BCl3 to regioselectively install a boronic acid group in the ortho-position of only one of the diaryl groups. The subsequent introduction of ortho-phenyl groups through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling gave rise to twisted structures with hindered intramolecular rotation, providing a structural lever with which the fluorophore absorption and emission properties could be adjusted.

Organophosphorus-catalyzed relay oxidation of H-Bpin: electrophilic C-H borylation of heteroarenes.

Project description:A nontrigonal phosphorus triamide (1, P{N[o-NMe-C6H4]2}) is shown to catalyze C-H borylation of electron-rich heteroarenes with pinacolborane (HBpin) in the presence of a mild chloroalkane reagent. C-H borylation proceeds for a range of electron-rich heterocycles including pyrroles, indoles, and thiophenes of varied substitution. Mechanistic studies implicate an initial P-N cooperative activation of HBpin by 1 to give P-hydrido diazaphospholene 2, which is diverted by Atherton-Todd oxidation with chloroalkane to generate P-chloro diazaphospholene 3. DFT calculations suggest subsequent oxidation of pinacolborane by 3 generates chloropinacolborane (ClBpin) as a transient electrophilic borylating species, consistent with observed substituent effects and regiochemical outcomes. These results illustrate the targeted diversion of established reaction pathways in organophosphorus catalysis to enable a new mode of main group-catalyzed C-H borylation.

Synthesis of (+)-discodermolide by catalytic stereoselective borylation reactions.

Project description:The marine natural product (+)-discodermolide was first isolated in 1990 and, to this day, remains a compelling synthesis target. Not only does the compound possess fascinating biological activity, but it also presents an opportunity to test current methods for chemical synthesis and provides an inspiration for new reaction development. A new synthesis of discodermolide employs a previously undisclosed stereoselective catalytic diene hydroboration and also establishes a strategy for the alkylation of chiral enolates. Furthermore, this synthesis of discodermolide provides the first examples of the asymmetric 1,4-diboration of dienes and borylative diene-aldehyde couplings in complex-molecule synthesis.

Competition studies in alkyne electrophilic cyclization reactions.

Project description:The relative reactivity of various functional groups toward alkyne electrophilic cyclization reactions has been studied. The required diarylalkynes have been prepared by consecutive Sonogashira reactions of appropriately substituted aryl halides and competitive cyclizations have been performed using I(2), ICl, NBS and PhSeCl as electrophiles. The results indicate that the nucleophilicity of the competing functional groups, polarization of the alkyne triple bond, and the cationic nature of the intermediate are the most important factors in determining the outcome of these reactions.

Metal-Free C-H Borylation of N-Heteroarenes by Boron Trifluoride.

Project description:Organoboron compounds are essential reagents in modern C-C coupling reactions. Their synthesis via catalytic C-H borylation by main group elements is emerging as a powerful tool alternative to transition metal based catalysis. Herein, a straightforward metal-free synthesis of aryldifluoroboranes from BF3 and heteroarenes is reported. The reaction is assisted by sterically hindered amines and catalytic amounts of thioureas. According to computational studies the reaction proceeds via frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) mechanism. The obtained aryldifluoroboranes are further stabilized against destructive protodeborylation by converting them to the corresponding air stable tetramethylammonium organotrifluoroborates.
