A taxonomic study on the genus Harpapion Voss, 1966 from China (Coleoptera, Apionidae).

ABSTRACT: Harpapion safranum sp. n. and Harpapion borisi sp. n. are described and figured. Harpapion vietnamense (Korotyaev, 1987) is recorded as new for China. The genitalia andterminalia of H. considerandum, H. coelebs andH. vietnamense are redescribed and redrawn. The diagnostic characters of Harpapion are defined. A key to the known species of the genus Harpapion from China is provided. Affinities with the genus Flavopodapion Korotyaev, 1987 are discussed.

Types of species of Apionidae (Coleoptera) described by Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) with description of a new genus.

Project description:The type specimens of species of Apionidae described by Carl Peter Thunberg are reviewed and lecto- and paralectotypes are designated for Apion craccae Thunberg, 1813, Apion limbatum Thunberg, 1813, Apion punctigerum Thunberg, 1815 and Apion astragali Thunberg, 1815. A new genus Thunbergapion (type species Apion limbatum Thunberg, 1813) is described, figured and placed in the tribe Aplemonini Kissinger, 1968. The new combination Thunbergapion limbatum (Thunberg, 1813) is proposed. A key to the known South African genera of the tribe is given. The following new synonymies are established: Oxystoma craccae (Linnaeus, 1767) = Apion craccae Thunberg, 1813 syn. n., Ischnopterapion (Ischnopterapion) loti (Kirby, 1808) = Apion punctigerum Thunberg, 1815, syn. n., and Pseudoprotapion astragali (Paykull, 1800) = Apion astragali Thunberg, 1815, syn. n.

Taxonomic note on the genus Taiwanocantharis Wittmer: synonym, new species and additional faunistic records from China (Coleoptera, Cantharidae).

Project description:Taiwanocantharis thibetanomima (Wittmer, 1997) is redefined and its type series is clarified. Three new speciesare described and illustrated, Taiwanocantharis wittmeri sp. n. (CHINA: Yunnan), Taiwanocantharis adentata sp. n. (CHINA: Gansu, Sichuan) and Taiwanocantharis parasatoi sp. n. (CHINA: Guangxi). Taiwanocantharis gansosichuana (Kazantsev, 2010) is synonymized with Taiwanocantharis drahuska (Švihla, 2004). Taiwanocantharis dedicata (Švihla, 2005) and Taiwanocantharis malaisei (Wittmer, 1989) are recorded to China for the first time. A key to the species of the Taiwanocantharis thibetana species-group is provided.

Taxonomic study on Lathrobium Gravenhorst (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Paederinae) from Longwangshan Mountain, East China.

Project description:Species of the genus Lathrobium Gravenhorst from Longwangshan Mountain, Zhejiang, East China are studied. A total of five species are recognized, among which three are described here as new: Lathrobium lingaesp. n., Lathrobium longwangshanensesp. n. and Lathrobium uncumsp. n., one species was unidentified and the female of Lathrobium tianmushanense Watanabe is newly reported. All of these species are illustrated and keyed.

Taxonomic revision of the genus Stenocyphus Marshall (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) from Brazil.

Project description:Stenocyphus Marshall, 1922 (Entiminae, Naupactini) includes three species: the type species S. bituberosus (Gyllenhal, 1833), S. tuberculatus (Hustache, 1938), comb. n. herein transferred from Neoericydeus Hustache, 1938, and S. sextuberosus sp. n. The genus is endemic to the Atlantic forests of the states of Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil andis mainly characterized by the presence of humped elytra bearing large conical tubercles on the intervals 5, or 3 and 5, or 3, 5 and 7. It shares some external morphological characters with Hadropus Schoenherr, 1826 and the Brazilian species of Cyrtomon Schoenherr 1823, but its phylogenetic position is uncertain. Herein we provide a diagnostic key to separate Stenocyphus from those genera, generic and species redescriptions or descriptions, a key to species, habitus photographs, line drawings of genitalia, and a discussion of the patterns of elytral tubercles in unrelated genera of Neotropical broad-nosed weevils.

Taxonomic revision of genus Ablattaria Reitter (Coleoptera, Silphidae) using geometric morphometrics.

Project description:The genus Ablattaria Reitter, 1884 (Coleoptera: Silphidae: Silphinae) is revised. Four taxa are recognized as valid species: Ablattariaarenaria (Kraatz, 1876), Ablattariacribrata (Ménétries, 1832), Ablattarialaevigata (Fabricius, 1775) and Ablattariasubtriangula Reitter, 1905. Ablattarialaevigatavar.meridionalis Ganglbauer, 1899 is newly treated as a junior subjective synonym of Ablattarialaevigata. Lectotypes are designated for Phosphugaarenaria Kraatz, 1876, Ablattariaarenariavar.punctigera Reitter, 1884, Ablattariaarenariavar.alleoni Portevin, 1926, Silphacribrata Ménétries, 1832, Silphalaevigata Fabricius, 1775, Silphagibba Brullé, 1832, Ablattariagibbavar.costulata Portevin, 1926, Ablattariagibbavar.distinguenda Portevin, 1926, Ablattariagibbavar.punctata Portevin, 1926 and Ablattariasubtriangula Reitter, 1905. The distribution of all taxa is mapped, based on material examined. Geometric morphometric methods were used to evaluate shape variability in Ablattaria. Results indicated sexual dimorphism in all species. Shape inconsistency was found between the sexes of all taxa when tested independently. The first two relative warp axes indicated 65.17% shape variation in males and 65.72% in females. Canonical variate analysis separated the taxa studied. There was minimal overlap between some groups in both sexes. Differences in body shape between populations of Ablattarialaevigata from Central Europe, Italy and Greece + Turkey were also examined. Relative warps implied 58.01% shape variability on both axes in males and 64.78% in females. CVA revealed noticeable overlaps between the groups, although the Italian population demonstrated a higher separation in both sexes.

Chasmogenus orbus Watanabe, 1987 is reported from Hong Kong, the first record outside Japan. Chasmogenus abnormalis (Sharp, 1890) is reported from the Chinese mainland for the first time. The male genitalia of each species are illustrated. A key to the Chinese species of the genus is provided.
