Quantifying the relationship between financial news and the stock market.

ABSTRACT: The complex behavior of financial markets emerges from decisions made by many traders. Here, we exploit a large corpus of daily print issues of the Financial Times from 2(nd) January 2007 until 31(st) December 2012 to quantify the relationship between decisions taken in financial markets and developments in financial news. We find a positive correlation between the daily number of mentions of a company in the Financial Times and the daily transaction volume of a company's stock both on the day before the news is released, and on the same day as the news is released. Our results provide quantitative support for the suggestion that movements in financial markets and movements in financial news are intrinsically interlinked.

Intraday News Trading: The Reciprocal Relationships Between the Stock Market and Economic News.

Project description:This study investigates the interdependent relationships between the stock market and economic news in the U.S. context. 2,440 economic tweets from Reuters and Bloomberg published in September 2015 were analyzed within short-term intervals (5 minutes, 20 minutes, and 1 hour) as well as 50 influential Bloomberg market coverage stories distributed via their terminals for the same period of time. Using Vector Auto Regression analyses, it was found that news volume, news relevance, and expert opinion in tweets seem to influence the fluctuation of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) positively, while economic news appears to respond to market fluctuation with less coverage, including fewer retweets, favorites, updates, or expert opinions conveyed. Inspecting the influential market stories by Bloomberg, the results imply that while Bloomberg terminals provide firsthand information on the market to professionals, tweets rather seem to offer follow-up reporting to the public. Furthermore, given that the effect of economic tweets on the DJI fluctuations was found to be strongest within longer time intervals (i.e., 1 hour), the findings imply that public traders need more time to evaluate information and to make a trading decision than professional investors.

News sensitive stock market prediction: literature review and suggestions.

Project description:Stock market prediction is a challenging task as it requires deep insights for extraction of news events, analysis of historic data, and impact of news events on stock price trends. The challenge is further exacerbated due to the high volatility of stock price trends. However, a detailed overview that discusses the overall context of stock prediction is elusive in literature. To address this research gap, this paper presents a detailed survey. All key terms and phases of generic stock prediction methodology along with challenges, are described. A detailed literature review that covers data preprocessing techniques, feature extraction techniques, prediction techniques, and future directions is presented for news sensitive stock prediction. This work investigates the significance of using structured text features rather than unstructured and shallow text features. It also discusses the use of opinion extraction techniques. In addition, it emphasizes the use of domain knowledge with both approaches of textual feature extraction. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of deep neural network based prediction techniques to capture the hidden relationship between textual and numerical data. This survey is significant and novel as it elaborates a comprehensive framework for stock market prediction and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches. It presents a wide range of open issues and research directions that are beneficial for the research community.

Quantifying Wikipedia Usage Patterns Before Stock Market Moves

Project description:Financial crises result from a catastrophic combination of actions. Vast stock market datasets offer us a window into some of the actions that have led to these crises. Here, we investigate whether data generated through Internet usage contain traces of attempts to gather information before trading decisions were taken. We present evidence in line with the intriguing suggestion that data on changes in how often financially related Wikipedia pages were viewed may have contained early signs of stock market moves. Our results suggest that online data may allow us to gain new insight into early information gathering stages of decision making.

LSTM based stock prediction using weighted and categorized financial news

Project description:A significant correlation between financial news with stock market trends has been explored extensively. However, very little research has been conducted for stock prediction models that utilize news categories, weighted according to their relevance with the target stock. In this paper, we show that prediction accuracy can be enhanced by incorporating weighted news categories simultaneously into the prediction model. We suggest utilizing news categories associated with the structural hierarchy of the stock market: that is, news categories for the market, sector, and stock-related news. In this context, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based Weighted and Categorized News Stock prediction model (WCN-LSTM) is proposed. The model incorporates news categories with their learned weights simultaneously. To enhance the effectiveness, sophisticated features are integrated into WCN-LSTM. These include, hybrid input, lexicon-based sentiment analysis, and deep learning to impose sequential learning. Experiments have been performed for the case of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) using different sentiment dictionaries and time steps. Accuracy and F1-score are used to evaluate the prediction model. We have analyzed the WCN-LSTM results thoroughly and identified that WCN-LSTM performs better than the baseline model. Moreover, the sentiment lexicon HIV4 along with time steps 3 and 7, optimized the prediction accuracy. We have conducted statistical analysis to quantitatively assess our findings. A qualitative comparison of WCN-LSTM with existing prediction models is also presented to highlight its superiority and novelty over its counterparts.

Nonlinear relationship between money market rate and stock market liquidity in China: A multifractal analysis.

Project description:This paper employs the multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis (MF-DCCA) model to estimate the nonlinear relationship between the money market rate and stock market liquidity in China from a multifractal perspective, leading to a better understanding of the complexity in the relationship between the interest rate and stock market liquidity. The empirical results show that the cross-correlations between the money market rate and stock market liquidity present antipersistence in the long run and that they tend to be positively persistent in the short run. The negative cross-correlations between the interest rate and stock market liquidity are more significant than the positive cross-correlations. Furthermore, the cross-correlations between the money market rate and stock market liquidity display multifractal characteristics, explaining the variations in the relationship between the interest rate and stock market liquidity at different time scales. In addition, the lower degree of multifractality in the cross-correlations between the money market rate and stock market liquidity confirms that it is effective for the interest rate to control stock market liquidity. The Chinese stock market liquidity is more sensitive to fluctuations in the money market rate in the short term and is inelastic in response to the money market rate in the long term. In particular, the positive cross-correlations between the money market rate and stock market liquidity in the short run become strong in periods of crises and emergencies. All the evidence proves that the interest rate policy is an emergency response rather than an effective response to mounting concerns regarding the economic impact of unexpected exogenous emergencies and that the interest rate cut policy will not be as effective as expected.

Machine learning sentiment analysis, COVID-19 news and stock market reactions.

Project description:The recent COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented worldwide event to study the influence of related news on the financial markets, especially during the early stage of the pandemic when information on the new threat came rapidly and was complex for investors to process. In this paper, we investigate whether the flow of news on COVID-19 had an impact on forming market expectations. We analyze 203,886 online articles dealing with COVID-19 and published on three news platforms (MarketWatch.com, NYTimes.com, and Reuters.com) in the period from January to June 2020. Using machine learning techniques, we extract the news sentiment through a financial market-adapted BERT model that enables recognizing the context of each word in a given item. Our results show that there is a statistically significant and positive relationship between sentiment scores and S&P 500 market. Furthermore, we provide evidence that sentiment components and news categories on NYTimes.com were differently related to market returns.

Quantifying the behavior of stock correlations under market stress.

Project description:Understanding correlations in complex systems is crucial in the face of turbulence, such as the ongoing financial crisis. However, in complex systems, such as financial systems, correlations are not constant but instead vary in time. Here we address the question of quantifying state-dependent correlations in stock markets. Reliable estimates of correlations are absolutely necessary to protect a portfolio. We analyze 72 years of daily closing prices of the 30 stocks forming the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). We find the striking result that the average correlation among these stocks scales linearly with market stress reflected by normalized DJIA index returns on various time scales. Consequently, the diversification effect which should protect a portfolio melts away in times of market losses, just when it would most urgently be needed. Our empirical analysis is consistent with the interesting possibility that one could anticipate diversification breakdowns, guiding the design of protected portfolios.

Quantifying the effect of investors' attention on stock market.

Project description:The investors' attention has been extensively used to predict the stock market. Different from existing proxies of the investors' attention, such as the Google trends, Baidu index (BI), we argue the collective attention from the stock trading platforms could reflect the investors' attention more closely. By calculated the increments of the attention volume for each stock (IAVS) from the stock trading platforms, we investigate the effect of investors' attention measured by the IAVS on the movement of the stock market. The experimental results for Chinese Securities Index 100 (CSI100) show that the BI is significantly correlated with the returns of CSI100 at 1% significance level only in 2014. However, it should be emphasized that the correlation of the new proposed measure, namely IAVS, is significantly at 1% significance level in 2014 and 2015. It shows that the effect of the measure IAVS on the movement of the stock market is more stable and significant than BI. This study yields important invest implications and better understanding of collective investors' attention.

Explainable stock prices prediction from financial news articles using sentiment analysis.

Project description:The stock market is very complex and volatile. It is impacted by positive and negative sentiments which are based on media releases. The scope of the stock price analysis relies upon ability to recognise the stock movements. It is based on technical fundamentals and understanding the hidden trends which the market follows. Stock price prediction has consistently been an extremely dynamic field of exploration and research work. However, arriving at the ideal degree of precision is still an enticing challenge. In this paper, we are proposing a combined effort of using efficient machine learning techniques coupled with a deep learning technique-Long Short Term Memory (LSTM)-to use them to predict the stock prices with a high level of accuracy. Sentiments derived by users from news headlines have a tremendous effect on the buying and selling patterns of the traders as they easily get influenced by what they read. Hence, fusing one more dimension of sentiments along with technical analysis should improve the prediction accuracy. LSTM networks have proved to be a very useful tool to learn and predict temporal data having long term dependencies. In our work, the LSTM model uses historical stock data along with sentiments from news items to create a better predictive model.
